Galaxy Quest is a cult film, spoofing Star Trek in a highly entertaining way. It both makes fun of, and shows love for the films it spins out of. It’s a movie I wish there was a sequel to. A comic is about as good as I’m getting.
The first issue takes on a plot point for the film, spinning it out in a smart way. It’s actually something I’ve wondered about, and nice to see it being taken on.
All the characters are back, and their personalities are on full display. That clash of ego was one of the fun things about the movie, and its shown off here, but not to the same extent. Overall, the story is fun and entertaining, though not as quite as fun as the film.
The issue with the comic is the art. The male characters are indistinguishable. I seriously can’t tell one person from the other, and have to rely on dialogue to figure out who is who. Its frustrating, and I can understand why the publisher probably can’t use the likeness of the actors who portrayed these characters in the film, but generic men that look like they were cloned is not the way to go.
The comic is hit and miss. The story is fun, and a nice follow up to the movie, but the character design is just a fail. The art though is fine, it’s just the male characters that are the issue. Overall, this is probably best for hardcore Questers.
