Review: Archer & Armstrong: The One Percent #1

Remember Occupy Wall Street? A lot of folks don’t. That means we lost and the villainous One Percent won!

Now, in the wake of their greatest victory a new vicious brand of One Percent rises to the top of the class, and this time there will be no one to BAIL OUT their enemies. Don’t miss this wealth of elitist entertainment introducing a brand new villain into the Archer and Armstrong universe!

Throughout 25 issues of Archer & Armstrong, Valiant, Fred Van Lente (and a few other creators) have put together one of the slyest commentaries on today’s economic and societal realities, all while focused on a killer kid and a drunken immortal. Some of that best commentary has been in the form of the villains, the One Percent, a clear reference to the ultra-wealthy who control the vast majority of the world’s wealth. What’s even more impressive was all of this was done in a hilarious story that was seriously laugh-out-loud funny.

In Archer & Armstrong: The One Percent #1, a special one-shot, writer Ray Fawkes takes over writing duties ratcheting up the One Percent for a new generation of masochistic hedonism that truly captures the over the top wealth of these individuals. It’s all done in such a slapstick way you’ll forget this is a middle finger to the super rich.

That slapstick humor is helped through the art, whose duty falls on the shoulder of Joe Eisma. The crazy shown in this comic is on par with a Loony Tunes cartoon, and violence only matched by a Tarantino film. The look somehow added to my glee reading the comic.

Overall, Archer & Armstrong is one of the most consistent comics on the market, delivering action and humor wrapped up in a nice package of commentary. This one-shot adds to the zaniness and gives us what will turn out to be fun villains for down the road.
