According to News.com.au an Australian family was offended by the violence and language, especially it coming from a 12 year old character.
In the movie, Hit Girl shoots a man in the face with a gun and at one stage in the movie tells her opponents: “OK you c—- let’s see what you can do now.”
Another offended group is the Australian Family Association (AFA), they had a little bit to say on the situation.
The [MA] rating has outraged Australian family groups who are reluctant to discredit it openly, fearing it would publicise the movie further. Australian Family Association spokesman John Morrissey said:
“The language is offensive and the values inappropriate – without the saving grace of the bloodless victory of traditional superheroes.”
The Australian Daily Telegraph, owned by Rupert Murdoch has covered the story so expect it to be hitting Fox News any minute now. We won’t go into the irony of Murdoch pushing faux outrage (Murdoch owned Fox lambasted entertainment such as GTA IV while Murdoch owned MySpace profited from advertising it is an easy example).
Coverage has hit British freebie paper The Metro, “Kick Ass slammed by family groups”, basically quoting and using the same quotes from the Telegraph story, as does The Straits Times and the Herald Sun.
Expect a lot of “what about the children” outrage in the next few months. The movie opens in April, just in time for my birthday.
