Godzilla: King of the Monsters topped the weekend box office, though came in at the lower end of studio expectations. Rocketman and Ma both beat their studio’s expectations in their debuts.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted with an estimated $49 million. The film had expectations to earn $50-55 million and was short of the $93.2 million opening for the 2014 reboot and Kong: Skull Island’s $61 million in 2017. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore from opening audiences which was 67% male and 59% were aged 25 or older.
Internationally, the Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted in 75 markets with $140 million for a worldwide debut over $179 million. That’s a bit over the film’s reported budget of $170 million.
Aladdin dropped to second in its second week with an estimated $42.3 million to bring its domestic total to $185 million. It also added $78.3 million internationally to bring that total to $261 million and a global total around $446 million.
Rocketman debuted in third place with an estimated $25 million. The film was expected to earn around $18-20 million so this is well ahead of expectations. Audiences gave it an “A-” CinemaScore with a crowd that was 51% female and 55% of the crowd aged 30 or older. The film is in its second week internationally adding 39 new openings and earning $19.2 million for an international total of $31.2 million.
In fourth place was Ma which earned an estimated $18.2 million. With just a $5 million budget, that’s a solid opening. The film received a “B-” CinemaScore with an audience that was 53% female and 53$ aged 25 or older. African Americans made up 36% of the audience, a majority. The film also earned $2.8 million internationally from 31 markets.
John Wick: Chapter 3 rounded out the top five with an estimated $11.1 million to bring its domestic total to $125.8 million. The film also earned an estimated $12.7 million internationally from 77 markets to bring that total to $95.9 million.
And, when it comes to comic related films…
Avengers: Endgame came in at #6 and added $6.7 million to its total to bring it to $815.5 million domestically. The film has now earned $2.713 billion. That puts it just $75 million shy of the all time record holder Avatar which earned $2.788 billion.
Captain Marvel slipped just one spot to #18. It added an estimated $170,000 to its domestic total and bringing it to $426.2 million.
