Review: Winter Soldier #3

Winter Soldier #4

A face from the past returns at a pivotal time in RJ’s deprogramming. But is his return too good to be true? Or is Bucky just being paranoid? What lengths is he willing to go to keep RJ safe? An issue filled with shocking choices.

Usually when one starts a comic series at issue #3, you can pick things up pretty easily. That’s still the case here, but with the added caveat that this is third of five issues (which I wasn’t aware of until I started reading). Needless to say, I haven’t read the first two issues.

But that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the comic.

A lot of what I needed to know was given to me from the recap page, and the rest through a wordy therapy session or two in the opening to the comic. It had the effect of bringing me up to speed without needlessly overburdening those who had read the other two issues with too much exposition.

The issue itself has a lot more emotional and psychological weight than physical threat level (though there is an interesting sequence in the comic, but more on that later) as Kyle Higgins digs into the damaged psyche of the Winter Soldier. Redemption stories have always been some of my favourite, and Higgins peels back a layer or two to make some revelations into Bucky’s mind; it’s nothing overly ground breaking or original, but it is teased out slowly and done very well (there’s a chance that it’s a much better reveal if you’ve read the first two issues).

The plot of the comic isn’t overly complex, and ties right into Bucky’s desire to give folks a new life after escaping from or moving on from a life of crime; it’s a concept that I really enjoy and hope that it’s expanded upon after this series (that it comes from Kyle Higgins doesn’t surprise me – his Image series C.O.W.L. also had a great central concept).

Rod Reis has an almost whimsical style in this issue; the art feels light, but easy to follow. There is a brilliant double page spread, although the effect was lost a little in the review copy I imagine it’ll be fantastic in print, and an action sequence that follows that’s also visually very impressive. You’ll be looking at those pages for sometime as you absorb the details.

Starting a five issue miniseries in the middle is never ideal, but with Winter Soldier #3 it is more than doable. This is a really fun and enjoyable comic with some not so subtle questions about the nature of redemption.

Having pulled RJ out of HYDRA, Bucky begins diving into the mystery of the young killer’s past. Where does he come from? Who are his parents? How do you rehabilitate someone who’s only ever known death? You give him something new to live for.

Review: Winter Soldier #2

Winter Soldier #2

As Bucky works to help others find the redemption that he found, Hydra takes issue with his new initiative…and sends a young killer to rectify the situation. Introducing R.J., teenage assassin extraordinaire, who’s been sent to kill the man he’s been modeled after: the Winter Soldier.

In one of the more unexpected standouts from the end of of 2018, Winter Soldier #2 is already a standout in 2019 too.

Written by Kyle Higgins, this second issue picks right up from the first with Bucky facing his mystery assailant. But, Higgins doesn’t leave us hanging. Instead the issue teases just enough for us to learn about this new character, R.J., and so far so good.

The issue is full of brutal fights and an origin that keeps you intrigued. It’s a solid mix that someone sticks to modern comics’ decompression as well as old school storytelling of delivering a one-shot in some ways.

While we don’t know everything about R.J. or his handler what’s clear is that Higgins has flipped the script as well. Instead of sticking to the usual defeat/kill the enemy, he sticks to the theme of the series which is redemption. Winter Soldier is a different type of series in that way and that’s a good thing.

The art by Rod Reis with lettering by Clayton Cowles is fantastic. There’s an almost watercolor type quality to it but that also enhances both the brutality of the story and R.J.’s youth. This is an example of art style matching up perfectly with the story. Anything else and the tone and quality wouldn’t be near as good.

Winter Soldier is clearly a different type of superhero story. Yes, there’s the action we’d expect but it’s the actions at the end of the battle that seems to set it apart so far. The introduction of R.J. has set up something that’s potentially very interesting flipping the script on Bucky in many ways forcing him to become the teacher and completing his growth from a trained killer to something more. This is a series to keep your eye on in 2019.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Conan the Barbarian #1

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

It’s a short week of releases with the holiday and you can get every single issue for under $50! So, instead of picking which you should get, we’re doing something a little bit different with going over what they are and why you should check out each release!

20th Century Boys: Perfect Edition Vol. 2 (VIZ Media) – These perfect editions collect two volumes of the award winning series and a perfect chance to get what you’ve been missing!

Champions #1 (Marvel) – The superhero team is expanding in members and their scope making sure to have a global focus! A perfect chance to jump on the series.

Conan the Barbarian #1 (Marvel) – The classic character returns to Marvel for all new adventures and it’s a must for fans of sword and sorcery.

Detective Comics #995 (DC Comics) – We’re here for the run up to issue #1000. It doesn’t happen too often and makes the lead up pretty exciting!

Heroes in Crisis #4 (DC Comics) – This series definitely has a love it or hate it thing going on but we want to see what happens next and if it goes where we think it’s going.

Man Without Fear #1 (Marvel) – Daredevil is “gone” but Hells Kitchen needs protectors. This mini-series focuses on those around Daredevil’s life in his absence.

One Dirty Tree (Uncivilized Books) – Noah Van Sciver’s new graphic memoir exploring his childhood growing up with eight siblings in a Morman family.

Scarlet #5 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – The new volume wraps up and we want to see where the series goes.

The Walking Dead #187 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – The series has revived itself with the introduction of the Commonwealth and we love to see what’s next with each issue.

Winter Soldier #2 (Marvel) – The first issue ended with a solid new villain (we think) and the overall direction for the series and character is cool. It’s all about finding redemption for others and taking on Hydra.

He’s been so many things but now Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier, has found redemption and he’s helping others find it too. Writer Kyle Higgins, artist Rod Reis, and letterer Clayton Cowles kick off a whole new direction and adventure for the Winter Soldier.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Border Town #4 (DC Comics/Vertigo) – Each issue has been fantastic giving us a monster story with a look and monsters we rarely see in entertainment and comics. This is a solid update to the Scooby-Doo concept and it works so well.

Dark Ark #12 (AfterShock Comics) – The new spin on classic Bible stories is fantastic bringing a sense of horror that’s beyond entertaining.

Die #1 (Image Comics) – Adults have to deal with the returning horror they barely survived as teenage role-players. Yeah, we’re in.

Doomsday Clock #8 (DC Comics) – We’re this far into this series, we really want to see what’s next and what the hell is going on.

Freeze #1 (Image Comics/Top Cow Productions) – People around the world are frozen and one person can fix that but should he? We’ve seen the concept in manga but we want to see this Western take on the concept.

Killmonger #1 (Marvel) – The breakout character from the Black Panther film gets his own miniseries that adds more to his history.

Laguardia #1 (Dark Horse/Berger Books) – A new series that looks at immigration and discrimination in America.

Martian Manhunter #1 (DC Comics) – The character has been put center of the DC Universe playing a big role with the Justice League and we want to see what this series brings and adds to the character.

Prodigy #1 (Image Comics/Millarworld/Netflix) – A new Mark Millar property and we want to see what this whole deal with Netflix is bringing to the comic market.

Self Made #1 (Image Comics) – A new series that sounds like a fantasy world that’s a bit focused on castes which is interesting enough. An Image #1 issue is something we want to check out.

Shazam #1 (DC Comics) – With a film out soon, it’s not surprising that we’re getting a new series and we want to see where this characters fits in the Rebirth DC Universe.

Snap Flash Hustle #1 (Black Mask Studio) – If it’s Black Mask, we check out the first issue. They tend to be a lot of future stars and interesting concepts.

Winter Soldier #1 (Marvel) – This new spin on the character sounds different enough from what we’ve seen before, a character who’s attempting to find redemption by helping others.

Wizard Beach #1 (BOOM! Studios) – This story about slackers wizards sounds fun and entertaining so we want to check out this debut issue.

The Wrong Earth #4 (AHOY Comics) – One of the best comics on the shelves right now.

X-Men: Exterminated #1 (Marvel) – The event still has one issue to go but this is the aftermath, yay delays! Still, we want to see this sendoff for the classic Cable before kid Cable takes over. Plus, we’re sure there’ll be spoilers for how it all ends.
