Vampirella #1 Gets a Print Run of Over 130,000 Copies

Vampirella #1

Vampirella is flying high for her big 50th anniversary! Dynamite has announced that the upcoming Vampirella #1 has blasted through expectations and is a massive success with an initial print run of over 130,000 copies! The issue is by writer Christopher Priest, artist Ergün Gündüz and a range of top tier cover artists fronted by Frank Cho.

This historic number includes all orders through Diamond, specialty retailers, and creator exclusive covers. This incredible sales number is the highest for a full price comic in Dynamite’s storied 15-year history. Furthermore, 130 thousand copies is higher than all recorded paid circulation numbers for the original Vampirella magazine – making this possibly also the best selling Vampirella comic book of all time!

Dynamite is confident in this blockbuster new series and made the first issue returnable for retailers, which is also continuing for the second issue to allow retailers to order aggressively with minimal risk and maximum reward. Retailers can order without worry and be prepared to serve the needs of Vampirella diehards who go back 50 years themselves as well as the growing crowd of new fans!

Dynamite’s team is already working hard to continue this success through the year and moving forward. Vampirella #2 features an eye-popping main cover from Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, perhaps the biggest artist in the industry today. Then the next issue is spearheaded by the iconic J. Scott Campbell. Each issue features additional covers from talented artists as well as top cosplay models.

Initial orders for Vampirella #2 are due this Thursday June 27.

Jordie Bellaire Writes Vampirella and Red Sonja a New Ongoing Series!

Dynamite‘s two flagship heroines are teaming up in a new ongoing series starting in September in Vampirella/Red Sonja, written by the multitalented and Eisner-winning Jordie Bellaire with art by Drew Moss.

The story starts in 1969, the genesis of Vampirella – timed perfectly with her 50th Anniversary now being celebrated in 2019. Vampi’s new to Earth and still adapting to our world. She finds herself attracted to the supernatural and paranormal mysteries of the world. When suddenly she runs across a young Red Sonja, plucked out of time and clueless. The two women set forth on an adventure, collaborating as both detectives and warriors to find out what has happened… only for more space-time shenanigans to befall them! Do not expect any cliché misunderstanding fights, these two Women of Dynamite are working together, no holds barred.

Joining Bellaire and Moss are Rebecca Nalty on colors and Becca Carey on letters. The first issue will feature a range of talented cover artists. Terry and Rachel Dodson lead the pack. Julian Totino Tedesco contributes a fun cover. Babs Tarr joins the crew. Jordie herself will color fan-favorite artist Leonardo Romero‘s piece. While interior artist Drew Moss will be doing “Then and Now” covers, depicting his modern style superimposed alongside classic art of the characters such as by Frank Frazetta. Watch out for covers from other huge names on future issues, as creators jump at the opportunity to draw these two characters side by side.

Vampirella/Red Sonja #1 is slated for release in September 2019.

Jose Gonzalez’s Iconic Vampirella Honored with Statue on Kickstarter

Dynamite Entertainment has launched a Kickstarter for a breathtaking Vampirella statue based on art by arguably the definitive artist for the character – José “Pepe” González! Fans can preorder their statues now at a limited time value and check out other extras available in the campaign!

This definitive piece that belongs in every Vampi fan’s collection in this hallmark year for the macabre icon. The high-quality resin sculpt is produced at 1/6 scale and stands 12.5 inches tall supported by a 5.5 inches wide base of her iconic bat logo. Steve Kiwus sculpted the piece, translating it from the legendary González image.

Vampirella first appeared in an eponymous magazine put out by Warren Publishing. Debuting as a simple horror anthology hostess in the vein of peers Uncle Creepy, Cousin Eerie and the Crypt-Keeper, she exploded in popularity and fans demanded fleshed out stories. Legendary writers and artists contributed to Vampi’s history making creation. Godfather of horror and sci-fi fandom Forrest J. Ackerman came up with the concept, then underground comix legend and Wonder Woman artist Trina Robbins designed the costume, for a first cover by fantasy painting master Frank Frazetta and an interior story by Ghost Rider artist Tom Sutton.

The depth of her stories really expanded with writer/editor Archie Goodwin (Batman, Iron Manand José González. The two introduced major supporting characters like Adam Van Helsing and Pendragon. González wowed readers with his jaw-dropping art utilizing unparalleled detail and ink washes, pushing the boundaries of the black and white magazine format. His frontispiece illustrations and occasional covers further cemented his legacy as he contributed to nearly every issue of the decades long Warren run.

The statue is also available in a black and white edition and backers can “upgrade” to get a limited edition marked and numbered Proof edition.

Other reward options and add-ons include a specially curated selection of graphic novels, art books that will perfectly complement the González and Warren era statue and enamel pins.

Also available are deluxe hardcover Vampirella Archives, an impressive 15 volume library that reprints all 112 issues of the Warren magazine restored to the highest quality. Fans can get the first five volumes together, which represent the most critically acclaimed era of González art and writer collaborators, or go all in on the entire set. That’s over 5,000 pages!

Dynamite is Producing a Limited Vampirella Lithograph To Benefit Artist Joyce Chin

Joyce Chin

Dynamite has announced an exclusive Vampirella lithograph to benefit artist in need Joyce Chin! On the way to C2E2 with her fellow superstar artist partner Art Adams, Joyce suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (stroke), exacerbated by a broken ankle from the resulting fall. Thankfully, Chicago’s Presence Resurrection hospital was able to perform surgery and provide care. She reports that she has not experienced any noticeable loss of function, a great blessing for such a well regarded artist! Unfortunately she could use fans’ help with the medical costs. Chin has a GoFundMe page up right now for fans to support. Dynamite has worked well with Joyce for years and would like to help out as much as possible. Through Dynamite’s website, fans can purchase the Vampirella lithograph or a limited edition signed by Joyce. The money raised will assist Joyce with medical costs.

The piece chosen for this lithograph was Joyce’s first work on the Daughter of Drakulon, originally gracing an alternate cover for Vampirella (2001) #20. Beyond the clean, gorgeous central figure, the piece amazes with endless detail in Vampi’s hair and the lush background. Such detail will be reproduced in high quality on the 11″ by 17″ lithograph print.

Joyce Chin is one of the greatest working artists in comic books. Breaking into the industry in the mid-1990s, Chin got major notice for her artwork in Wynonna Earp, written by Beau Smith. From there, Chin moved onto a celebrated run on Xena: Warrior Princess comics at Topps and Dark Horse, today reprinted by Dynamite in the Classic Years Omnibus. In the 2000s she began working with Top Cow and contributed to some of the earliest Dynamite titles such as the Monster War crossover. At this point she cemented her legacy as one of the most treasured Vampirella artists across several crossover specials and variant covers. Today Joyce is one of the most in demand cover artists, working with every major publisher. Recent work includes variants for Black Panther, Mighty Thor, Doctor Strange and Ms. Marvel. For Dynamite she has continued to contribute to Vampirella and has drawn many covers for the Chaos! line including Evil Ernie, Purgatori, Lady Demon and Alice Cooper vs. Chaos! Fans can find some of her cherished interior artwork in the Spring 2019 issue of Playboy, containing an exclusive Vampirella story written by Gail Simone.
