Review: Unity #24

UNITY_024_Cover-A_BERNARDGIN-GR, the reformed killer robot who destroyed Mexico City and rampaged through downtown Los Angeles during the Armor Hunters’ attack, has turned on her Unity teammates! As she perpetrates the world’s most unstoppable jailbreak – a head-first, guns-blazing, kamikaze flight straight into the military base that holds her one-time squad – can X-O Manowar, Livewire, Ninjak, and the Eternal Warrior stop the giant engine of destruction…while trapped inside it? And if they survive GIN-GR, all they have to look forward to is the remaining Armor Hunters attacking from all sides!

One of my favourite things about Unity that I’ve noticed over the past two (unreviewed) issues is that they don’t like each other very much. Which makes for some interesting moments.

Unity #24 is the finale of a two part sequel two the Armor Hunters story line from last year, which was before I started to follow the publisher’s comics. Although at some point I intend to read the story, that I haven’t read it yet didn’t lessen my enjoyment of issues #23 and #24 of Unity. I’ve mentioned before about how useful Valiant‘s recap pages are, and the same rings true again here; giving enough background knowledge of the relevant events leading up to the story that you’re able to enjoy this two parter.

James Asmus has written an action packed story that packs in some great one liners from the Unity team, with each character really feeling as if they’ve got their own voice. The story takes place over a relatively short time period, and the pacing reflects that, as does the art. There is an urgency to Karl Moline‘s art that lends itself well to the pacing of the story in the same way, but an over reliance on thicker inks and shadows did detract a little from the quality of the art work.

Unity #24 was an enjoyable, if not spectacular comic, and although it wasn’t quite as good as some of the other single issues from Valiant that have come out lately, it’s a great popcorn comic and one that should be enjoyable to new fans (so long as you also pick up issue #23).

The world is suspended within balances of power. Tense and delicate terms of peace, crisscrossing and humming just below the surface. The Vine plantings, undercover alien spies of a galaxy-spanning race, hold positions of influence all over the planet. Toyo Harada, Earth’s most unstoppable psiot, amassed a bedrock of power through his corporate, political, and super-powered maneuverings. A tenuous détente has long held between the slumbering giants, each with the world held loosely in their grip. Until now.

As Harada presses his gambit to wage war for utopia, the agents of the Vine who have watched him for decades move to keep the megalomaniac in check. And if Harada wants to save the world…he’ll have to get rid of the competition. Cold war turns red hot as New York Times best-selling writer Joshua Dysart (HARBINGER) and all-star Valiant artists CAFU (UNITY) and Juan Jose Ryp (NINJAK)  unfold another chapter of IMPERIUM, the comic that Herotaku calls “an entertaining, compelling read month after month”!

Review: Ninjak #9

NINJAK_TPB_002_COVER_SUAYANAs Ninjak goes head-to-head with Fakir of the Shadow Seven, devastating secrets of his past stand revealed that will change his life forever! Plus: Roku makes her move… and an atom bomb goes missing. Yeah, that’s right, an atom bomb is MISSING. The world’s gone to hell…and only Ninjak can save it…that is if he lives long enough!

The ninth issue of the ongoing monthly Ninjak series concludes both The Shadow Wars, and also the back up strip, The Lost Files, that has been as enjoyable, if not more so, than the main arc – for me at least.

The last couple of issues of Ninjak have been good, but not quite as good as some of the other Valiant  published comics I’ve read recently, and the same can honestly be said for this issue. Now, in all fairness, Ninjak has been better than most other comics I’ve read lately, and this issue surpasses them all. Matt Kindt has wrapped up both the main story line as well as the back up story line in this issue, and I don’t want to give too much away, but the ending of this comic was pretty great. Whether you hunt down the individual issues or wait for the inevitable trade paperback, this is a great Ninjak story that you’ll want to read a couple of times.

The art in both stories within this issue is solid, indeed the two art teams are tough to distinguish between which provides a nice consistency to the artwork as both tales head to their conclusion.

When it comes to the back up story, The Lost Files, in my last review I said that it “continues to be a highlight for me, and in many ways I’m enjoying seeing this unfold more than the main story. Perhaps because it reminds me of the training scenes Bruce Wayne received in Batman Begins. I’m enjoying finding out how Colin King became the ninja we know and love today. That The Lost Files is being told as a back up story is great; by not devoting two or three full issues to the origin of NinjakValiant are able to use the arc to compliment the main story, feeding us the origin gradually, while at the same time providing a great back up strip to readers.” There is so much more I want to say about the back up, but I’m trying to avoid any spoilers, so last month’s words are still just as true this month.

Ninjak #9 is another solid comic from one of the best publishers around right now. If do want to start reading about Valiant‘s purple clad ninja, then this may not be the best comic to start with – it is the conclusion to two stories within the same comic, and while you can certainly pick issue #9 up and enjoy it, there’s going to be threads tied up and questions answered from earlier in the arc that you may not fully grasp; indeed, there are probably some loose ends tidied that I’m unaware of (I started reading Ninjak as The Shadow Wars commenced).

I don’t want to spoil anything about this comic, but there are some great… look, I really don’t want to spoil anything here, so I’m not saying anything about it. Whether you read the trade or the individual issues – and honestly I’d recommend the issues myself, as that way you get to read the comics as they were originally printed – this was one hell of a ride.

Review: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1

WRATH_001_COVER-A_LAFUENTEFor five millennia, the Eternal Warrior has shaped history at the end of his sword. He’s razed empires, toppled civilizations, and broken armies as an immortal soldier in service to the Earth.

But now, the Eternal Warrior has been torn from the world he once protected and finds himself stranded in a hostile alien landscape unlike any he’s faced before. Separated from his earthly environs, can history’s deadliest soldier survive a realm far older, far deadlier, and fare more ruinous than anything he’s ever encountered? Beyond Earth lies eternity…
Let’s get one thing out of the way before we start the review proper: there will more than likely be spoilers for Valiant‘s Book Of Death event contained within this review, so if you haven’t read that but you’re curious about this comic, the Cliff’s Notes version is buy it. The opening chapter is interesting, if not perfect, but I’m willing to bet that we’ll  soon have one awesome series on our hands.

Alright, there may be spoilers from here on out.

Wrath Of The Eternal warrior is scripted by Robert Venditti (who also handled Valiant‘s summer event, Book Of Death), and I would be lying if I said my expectations were already sky high for this series before even picking up the advance review copy that I was fortunate enough to read. Does the first issue hold up to my expectations? Well, not really. It’s a solid opening issue, and an interesting look at an immortal character, but there was something missing for me, but I can’t quite put my finger on what.

After the events of the superb Book Of DeathThe Eternal Warrior has become one of my favourite comic book characters currently being published, so although this comic didn’t quite meet my stratosphere level expectations, that doesn’t mean it’s no good. Indeed, Robert Venditti is on fine form here, scripting an issue that asks more questions than it answers which makes perfect sense for the opening chapter in Valiant‘s latest ongoing series, and in all honesty is exactly what I expected.

Venditti is joined this issue by an extensive art team of artists Raul Allen & Patricia Martin, art assistant David Astruga with additional colours by Borja Pindado (I’m going to refer to them as The Artists or the Art Team from here on out for simplicity’s sake, and because I don’t know who was responsible for what). The layout of the panels in this issue after the story hops back to before are deceptively simple; indeed there are three pages here that have an identical layout of two rows of five panels and a single large one at the bottom that depict some remarkably interesting art. The scenes within those pages are actually quite simple, the Art Team do a wonderful job in showing just how content Gilad is to enjoy the smell of cooking, or the sounds of loved ones approaching. Those pages are very subtle, but they convey a side to the Eternal Warrior that is seldom seen (at least one I haven seldom seen), and adds another layer to an already interesting character.

That Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1 didn’t meet my expectations doesn’t disappoint me as much as I expected, indeed I’m actually surprised by just how much more I enjoyed the issue when rereading it as I was writing this review. Robert Venditti and the Artists have delivered a solid issue that visually is packed with a lot of content across some simple (and yet all the more interesting because of that simplicity) panel layouts that allow the Art Team to really pace the story very well. As an opening chapter to a new series, Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1 does exactly what it needs to do: it makes me want more.

Simply put, this is a comic you must read if you have any interest in the Eternal Warrior.
