Featuring the breakout star of Harbinger in her first-ever solo adventure, Valiant’s high-flying, high-spirited super-heroine is already stealing the spotlight with mainstream recognition… months ahead of its January 27th debut!

Orphaned at a young age, Faith Herbert – a psionically gifted “psiot” discovered by the Harbinger Foundation – has always aspired to greatness. But now this once ordinary teenager is taking control of her destiny and becoming the hard-hitting hero she’s always known she can be – complete with a mild-mannered secret identity, unsuspecting colleagues, and a day job as a reporter that routinely throws into her harms way! Review: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1

WRATH_001_COVER-A_LAFUENTEFor five millennia, the Eternal Warrior has shaped history at the end of his sword. He’s razed empires, toppled civilizations, and broken armies as an immortal soldier in service to the Earth.

But now, the Eternal Warrior has been torn from the world he once protected and finds himself stranded in a hostile alien landscape unlike any he’s faced before. Separated from his earthly environs, can history’s deadliest soldier survive a realm far older, far deadlier, and fare more ruinous than anything he’s ever encountered? Beyond Earth lies eternity…
Let’s get one thing out of the way before we start the review proper: there will more than likely be spoilers for Valiant‘s Book Of Death event contained within this review, so if you haven’t read that but you’re curious about this comic, the Cliff’s Notes version is buy it. The opening chapter is interesting, if not perfect, but I’m willing to bet that we’ll  soon have one awesome series on our hands.

Alright, there may be spoilers from here on out.

Wrath Of The Eternal warrior is scripted by Robert Venditti (who also handled Valiant‘s summer event, Book Of Death), and I would be lying if I said my expectations were already sky high for this series before even picking up the advance review copy that I was fortunate enough to read. Does the first issue hold up to my expectations? Well, not really. It’s a solid opening issue, and an interesting look at an immortal character, but there was something missing for me, but I can’t quite put my finger on what.

After the events of the superb Book Of DeathThe Eternal Warrior has become one of my favourite comic book characters currently being published, so although this comic didn’t quite meet my stratosphere level expectations, that doesn’t mean it’s no good. Indeed, Robert Venditti is on fine form here, scripting an issue that asks more questions than it answers which makes perfect sense for the opening chapter in Valiant‘s latest ongoing series, and in all honesty is exactly what I expected.

Venditti is joined this issue by an extensive art team of artists Raul Allen & Patricia Martin, art assistant David Astruga with additional colours by Borja Pindado (I’m going to refer to them as The Artists or the Art Team from here on out for simplicity’s sake, and because I don’t know who was responsible for what). The layout of the panels in this issue after the story hops back to before are deceptively simple; indeed there are three pages here that have an identical layout of two rows of five panels and a single large one at the bottom that depict some remarkably interesting art. The scenes within those pages are actually quite simple, the Art Team do a wonderful job in showing just how content Gilad is to enjoy the smell of cooking, or the sounds of loved ones approaching. Those pages are very subtle, but they convey a side to the Eternal Warrior that is seldom seen (at least one I haven seldom seen), and adds another layer to an already interesting character.

That Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1 didn’t meet my expectations doesn’t disappoint me as much as I expected, indeed I’m actually surprised by just how much more I enjoyed the issue when rereading it as I was writing this review. Robert Venditti and the Artists have delivered a solid issue that visually is packed with a lot of content across some simple (and yet all the more interesting because of that simplicity) panel layouts that allow the Art Team to really pace the story very well. As an opening chapter to a new series, Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1 does exactly what it needs to do: it makes me want more.

Simply put, this is a comic you must read if you have any interest in the Eternal Warrior.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

HERO HOURLY COVERWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1 (Valiant) – The Eternal Warrior has become one of my favourite comic book characters recently, and with this new series being the first released when my ear is turned toward Valiant has really got me excited.

Hero Hourly #1 (21 Pulp) – What if your day job was to be a superhero? What if instead of asking “you want fries with that?” you were punching people just waiting for the clock to tick own? Yeah, I can’t wait to get my hands on this inaugural offering from 21 Pulp.

The Paybacks #3 (Dark Horse) – Probably one of the funniest series on my pull list, the idea of a superhero repo squad is hillarious. If you can’t tell, I seem to have a hankering for non-traditional superhero fare this week.

Red Thorn #1 (Vertigo) – After talking with David Baillie and Meghan Hetrick about this comic (the writer and artist, respectively), I’m really pumped to check this out on Wednesday. That it’s chock full of Scottish mythology is also very interesting, as I know very little about that, and I’m looking forward to read some more.

Brett

Top Pick: Hero Hourly #1 (21 Pulp) – You think your job sucks? 21 Pulp kicks off their publishing slate with this new series which sees an average joe who can’t get the work he wants after college taking on a low paying gig as a superhero. Yes, superheroes are hired out as hourly security guards

Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven (Lion Forge/IDW Publishing) – I remember watching WWE/WWF when I was a kid in the 80s, and one of the rockstars of that time was Andre the Giant, the mountain of a man. This graphic novel, working with his daughter, presents us the life of this legend. There’s already been one graphic novel released on Andre, and I loved that, and am looking forward to seeing how this one compares.

The Paybacks #3 (Dark Horse) – One of the funniest comics out there right now. It’s a superhero repo team. If that idea alone doesn’t put a smile on your face…

Star Wars: Vader Down #1 (Marvel) – I’ve read the first issue and if you’re a fan of Marvel’s Star Wars comics, you’ll love this start of their first crossover event. So good.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #1 (Valiant) –  When I think of Valiant, I think quality. The event Book of Death really shook up the Eternal Warrior setting him upon this new path. When it says Valiant, I know I’m going to be entertained and this kicking off a new series is a great place to start and find out yourself.

Elana

Top Pick: Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #4 (Image Comics)Phonogram is the best new comic around. I wrote an essay on why. A must for all music lovers and comics fans alike.

Jughead #2 (Archie Comics) – It’s a new world — one in which people who mostly read super heroes or read creator-owned comics are won over by the quirky humor and art of Chip Zardski and Erica Henderson. A world where people like me actually read an Archie comic. I truly enjoyed this new take on the world of Archie. From what I know of Jughead (ok, not much) Erica and Chip are channeling Jughead’s spirit for a new age. Really fun.

The Mighty Thor #1 (Marvel) – Thor is still Doctor Jane Foster, therefore I’m still interested.

Pretty Deadly #6 (Image Comics) – Pretty Deadly is about Death’s Daughter. But the real focus is the comic’s atmosphere — like a psychedelic Western movie, and the unusual poetic rhythm of its prose. This new arc takes place many years after issue 5. It starts like a psychedelic western too but it ends like…. you’ll just have to read it.

Review: Bloodshot Reborn #8

bloodshot 8 coverThe secrets behind Project Bloodshot are finally revealed!

Festival and Hoyt fall deep down the rabbit hole and discover a much bigger conspiracy than they ever imagined. Meanwhile, Bloodshot must race to stop the nanites from claiming another victim – this time, someone with close, personal ties to Ray Garrison

The penultimate issue of the current story arc The Hunt, is not a great jumping on point because if you haven’t read any of the previous issues, you’ll be a bit lost. That being said, this is a solid entry into the Bloodshot Reborn series.

Jeff Lemire and Butch Guice send this story rocketing to its conclusion with a comic that starts out mirroring the slower pace of issue #7 before taking off. Focusing more on the emotional struggle of Ray Garrison as he’s torn between reabsorbing the nanites that turn him into Bloodshot in order to prevent an insatiable blood lust from claiming innocent lives, while at the same time potentially losing his humanity at the same time; the more nanites that Garrison absorbs, the more he feels his humanity slide, and the closer he is to returning to the killing machine he used to be.

It’s an interesting idea and one that’s explored well in this issue, but there’s certainly still more that could be said on the matter (an I’m sure next issues there will be). That there is going to be an emotional confrontation next issue is quite likely, but until then, Guice and Lemire continue to build a phenomenal story that could easily be adapted into other media.

Bloodshot Reborn #8 is another solid comic book from Valiant that continues the current story arc brilliantly. As it stands, this is a story that’s worth picking up whether in single issues or the inevitable trade, but with the finale yet to come, the final verdict on this arc will have to wait till next month.

For five millennia, the Eternal Warrior has shaped history at the end of his sword.

New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (BOOK OF DEATH, X-O MANOWAR) and visionary artist Raúl Allén (NINJAK, Hawkeye) forge a new legend for Valiant’s master of war with an all-new ongoing series in…WRATH OF THE ETERNAL WARRIOR #1!

But when a gang of marauders arrives, the settlement’s survival is threatened, and Bloodshot is forced to bring justice to the distorted and disjointed badlands of the Valiant Universe!
