The basketball season is off to a start, and Charlie, Liv, and the rest of the Avant-Guards are trekking across state for their very first game. They’ve hardly had time to polish their skills, though, and if the season isn’t going to end before it’s really begun, they’ll have to fight to make their dreams come true!

The Avant-Guards #3

Your First Look at the Dream Team in The Avant-Guards #3

BOOM! Studios has revealed a first look at The Avant-Guards #3, a new chapter in the twelve-issue series from writer Carly Usdin and artist Noah Hayes about a ragtag group of friends who band together to build the first ever basketball team at their historic woman’s art college, available in stores March 27, 2019.

The Avant-Guards’ efforts have paid off, and with the addition of new transfer student and former basketball star, Charlie Bravo, they are finally an official basketball team. But just because they’ve got the right number of players and a spot in the league doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ready to compete on the court, and their first game is only a few days away! Liv and Charlie will have to scramble to train their fellow art school misfits to work together and trust each other in time to face their first opponents of the season… The Cuddly Retrievers of the American Institute of Veterinary Curiosities!

The Avant-Guards #3 features a main cover by Hayes and a variant cover by Cara McGee.

Review: The Avant-Guards #2

The Avant-Guards #2

Charlie is done with team sports. Nope. Not happening. Never again. But Liv and the rest of the Georgia O’Keeffe College of Arts and Subtle Dramatics basketball team are determined to get Charlie to join them, and they’ve cooked up a ruse to woo her! For basketball. Nothing else.

The Avant-Guards #2 continues the fun, cute, series, that continues BOOM! Studios and BOOM! Box‘s streak of winning sports themed comics.

Written by Carly Usdin, the second issue focuses on Liv and the rest of the potential team attempting to get Charlie to join. The comic is beyond adorable wearing the fun on its sleeve. But, what Usdin also makes the comic wear its progressive values on its sleeve as we learn more about each girl.

The second issue gives each a moment to shine as the “team comes together” and the presentation is adorable. There’s an energy about the comic, a vibe about it all, that’s hard to not enjoy and that’s partially the enthusiasm of the character Liv and what she brings to the series. Usdin has created a character that should be annoyingly perky but somehow doesn’t cross the line and instead sucks us into the story as that enthusiasm is infectious.

Noah Hayes‘ art with colors by Rebecca Nalty and lettering by Ed Dukeshire is fantastic. Each character, even if they’re in the background, has personality, and each is beyond unique in their own way. No two are the same and the designs tell stories by themselves. There’s Hayes also presents body language that gives each character a way to move that is subtle but also feels important in establishing each character.

The first issue was solid and second is just as fantastic. The Avant-Guards is the queer basketball comic you didn’t know you wanted but whose voice makes it hard to not get sucked into the excitement.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Avant-Guards #2

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

The Avant-Guards #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue of this series was excellent. The focus on building of an extracurricular college basketball team is so much fun.

Captain America #8 (Marvel) – Ta-Nehisi Coates has been putting together an epic Captain America run that dips into the past while forging something new for the future.

Daredevil #2 (Marvel) – The first issue blew us away and we’re expecting no less from the second.

The Forgotten Queen #1 (Valiant) – A whole new series from Valiant that’s really something different from them and we’re excited.

Heroes in Crisis #6 (DC Comics) – The event is controversial but we really want to see where it all goes.

Martian Manhunter #3 (DC Comics) – The maxi-series has been fantastic so far. It’s given us a new take on the classic character focusing on his origin and tragedy but also the impact today.

Peter Cannon Thunderbolt #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The character is updated and it’s fantastic.

Star Trek: Q Conflict #2 (IDW Publishing) – The first issue was fun bringing together the crews from the various series. How they all interact will be the draw of this series.

Sweetie #1 (Action Lab Entertainment) – This series focused on a young girl that’s a comic superfan seems like it’ll be a lot of fun.

X-Force #3 (Marvel) – The first two issues have felt like a nice return of X-Force and the team dynamic has been solid. Add in Ahab and the return of Stryfe and we’re all in.

Don’t Miss Your Shot at The Avant-Guards #2

BOOM! Studios has released a first look at The Avant-Guards #2, continuing the all-new twelve issue series from writer Carly Usdin and artist Noah Hayes about a ragtag group of friends who band together to build the first ever basketball team at their historic woman’s art college, available in stores February 2019.

Olivia “Liv” Bates, art major and basketball enthusiast, loves nothing more than a challenge, whether it’s on or off the court, so when she decides that new transfer student Charlie Bravo is the perfect fit for the team (and possibly for Liv), she gives it everything she’s got and more. Liv ends up recruiting the rest of the budding Georgia O’Keeffe College of Arts and Subtle Dramatics basketball team to approach their new potential team member. But Charlie’s got a complicated past and a thorny relationship with team sports, and Liv might lose Charlie entirely by pushing too hard, too fast. Will she manage to convince Charlie to give her and basketball a try or will her hail mary shot miss the net and cost her the team?

The Avant-Guards #2 features a main cover by Hayes and a variant cover by Cara McGee. The comic goes on sale February 27, 2019.

The Avant-Guards #1

Welcome to the Georgia O ‘Keeffe College of Arts and Subtle Dramatics, an historically all-female school whose population is decidedly more drama geek than jock.

Liv, aspiring actor and basketball enthusiast, doesn’t understand why she can ‘t be both, but she seems alone in that belief… until Charlie.

Charlie is a recent transfer, a star basketball player, and the answer to all of Liv ‘s problems. She ‘ll stop at nothing to get Charlie to join the ragtag group of misfits that make up their fledgling basketball team.

There’s been a wave of western takes on sports manga with BOOM! Studios, through their BOOM! Box imprint, leading the charge in releases. The Avant-Guards is the latest entry into that genre following a basketball team for a very small school. Like those other series, this one knows that while the sport itself will deliver action, it’s the characters that will really bring us back. And, it delivers that and then some.

The first issue revolves around Charlie and what makes it work is delivering a story so many of us can relate to and empathize with. Writer Carly Usdin keeps it simple, so far, by focusing on a new student trying to figure out where they fit in. It’s something we go through, especially when it comes to school. Usdin also gives us a nice mix of characters with each being unique in their own way. And yet, it still makes sense this group would get together.

Noah Hayes‘ art with color by Rebecca Nalty and lettering by Ed Dukeshire is solid. The style is a bit on the cartoonish end of things but that style does well to compliment the tone of the comic which can switch between serious and humor. A different style, the story as presented might not work but there’s a nice balance between needs here. There character design is fun as well giving each a bit more personality and allowing us the reader to find out more about each without having to be told.

The Avant-Guards #1 is a fun debut that continues BOOM!’s successful steak of bringing the manga sports genre to western audiences. This is another fun one that delivers a solid set up with a nice mix of humor and emotion. Definitely one to check out this week.

Blossoms 666

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

It’s a short week of releases with the holiday and you can get every single issue for under $50! So, instead of picking which you should get, we’re doing something a little bit different with going over what they are and why you should check out each release!

American Carnage #3 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – An undercover agent dealing with white supremacists, yeah, we’re all in for this series.

The Avant-Guards #1 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – BOOM! has been rocking series the popular genre of manga sports comics with a western spin. This is the latest entry into that and we can’t wait to read it.

Blossoms 666 #1 (Archie Horror/Archie Comics) – Archie’s horror line of comics has been fun and different and this latest entry is one we’ve been waiting to check out since it was announced.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The classic tv show is back in a reboot and we’re beyond intrigued about the new spin.

Freedom Fighters #2 (DC Comics) – Nazi punching, nuff said.

Go-Bots #3 (IDW Publishing) – The first two issues are no joke and much more depth than we expected. Hopefully the third is more of that excellence.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (Marvel) – The Guardians get a new volume and a new line up of characters that reminds us of the Abnett and Lanning days of the series.

Naomi #1 (Wonder Comics/DC Comics) – A brand new character debuts in Brian Michael Bendis’ in contunuity Wonder Comics line and we’re very intrigued.

Oliver #1 (Image Comics) – New twists on Oliver Twist seems to be all the rage now but we’re always up to see how someone updates and makes their take unique to a classic like Dickens’ famous orphan.

Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 (Marvel) – Cyclops is back, but how? This promises to answer that question.

BOOM! Dunks with a First Look at The Avant-Guards #1

BOOM! Studios has revealed a first look at The Avant-Guards #1, the riveting start to an all-new twelve issue series in January 2019 from writer Carly Usdin and artist Noah Hayes where it’s all about finding the courage to shoot your shot.

Olivia “Liv” Bates is determined to jump start the first basketball league ever for art colleges, and while the Georgia O’Keeffe College of Arts and Subtle Dramatics isn’t necessarily known for its team sports, she’s got all the missing pieces except one: the final member of her basketball team. Which is where new student Charlie Bravo comes in.

Charlie is a recent transfer to the historic women’s art college and, for some mysterious reason, has decided to leave her glory days as a basketball star behind. If only Liv can convince a reluctant Charlie to lace up her shoes and get back on the court with their ragtag team, her dream of an art school basketball team could come alive! And Charlie might just find the friendship and community she’s looking for at this brand new school.

The Avant-Guards #1 features a main cover by Hayes and a variant cover by Veronica Fish and comes to shelves January 23, 2019.
