New York Comic Con 2017: DC Announces The Curse of Brimstone and The Unexpected

Fans attending the Dark Nights: Metal/New Age of DC Heroes panel at New York Comic Con got more than their money’s worth when they came to hear the latest about the headbanging, face-melting event taking comics by storm! Moderated by DC Publisher Dan DiDio, the dais included an all-star lineup of DC talent, beginning with the bestselling Metal team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo. With the critical and sales success of the six-issue main series, Dan, Scott and Greg talked about how Dark Nights: Metal truly is an event that impacts the DC Universe, now as well as in the future.

Initially announced with as Dark Matter, fans also got to hear and see the latest on what’s been renamed as the New Age of DC Heroes. Spinning out of Metal, the unique vertical gatefold covers were revealed for The Terrifics, The Immortal Men, Damage, The Silencer, and Sideways. DiDio reminded the crowd that all debut issues would launch at a $2.99 price point and that the gatefolds could hold some “easter eggs” that will be revealed throughout the series.

NYCC fans were also introduced to two additional titles added to the New Age of DC Heroes lineup, along with their creators. Writer Justin Jordan, who also is co-writing Sideways with DiDio was on hand to talk about his vision for The Curse of Brimstone, showing off some of the early artwork and character designs, while Steve Orlando got to introduce fans to his new mystery title, The Unexpected.

DC Reveals More Metal and Dark Matter including Brimstone and The Terrifics

DC Comics has been knocking it out of the park this San Diego Comic-Con with exciting reveals that all feel like a mix of old and new. At a panel at the convention, the publisher surprised even more with even more news.

From the panel, Publisher Dan Didio said “Dark Days leads to Dark Nights, and Dark Nights leads to Dark Matter.”

Characters and stories from each of the Dark Matter books will be plotted throughout Metal, which Scott Snyder has described as “if Frazetta and Jack Kirby had a baby to a heavy metal soundtrack, Metal is that event. Battle armor, dinosaurs, robots. It’s really meant to be a celebration of comics and is a thank you to you the fans, honestly. We’re going all out.”

During the panel DiDio revealed that, in addition to the titles announced earlier this year at C2E2, DC would be publishing additional titles under the upcoming Dark Matter banner. New artwork for Brimstone and The Terrifics was shown, in addition to key artwork for The Silencer, Sideways, Immortal Men, Damage, and New Challengers.

At the panel DiDio pulled a surprise guest, writer Jeff Lemire, on stage to join the panelists. Lemire will make his return to DC with the title in 2018.

DC Comics Goes from Rebirth to Dark Matter with Five Brand New Series

DC Comics feels like its dropped the gauntlet down at today’s Diamond Retailer Summit before C2E2 as they announced a new line of books called Dark Matter that emphasizes artists along with writers, with a whole bunch of new characters. The initiative comes after Marvel was criticized for saying artists don’t sell books. At the announcement were Jim Lee, John Romita, Jr. and Andy Kubert.

The initiative comes out of the company’s latest creator summit and fills what they thought was missing from comics and was a chance to “create something different than maybe fans of this generation hadn’t see before.”

The line kicks off in August with Dark Nights: Metal which will be written by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, the duo who gave a shot in the arm to Batman and made his series consistently one of DC’s best selling comics. That comic is the launching pad for the rest of the line.

One series is Sideways about a teleporting teenager who was changed during those events. It will be co-written by Justin Jordan and Dan DiDio with art by Kenneth Rocafort. Also launching is The Silencer written by Dan Abnett and drawn by John Romita, Jr. That series is about Honor Guest, the former world’s deadliest assassin trying to live a quiet life in the suburbs before her former life comes back to haunt her. Both of those debut in September.

October sees the launch of Immortal Men by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee. The story is about five immortal siblings who operate in the shadows to recruit individuals to prevent Armageddon. That month also sees Damage written by Robert Venditti with art by Tony S. Daniel. In that series army recruit Ethan Avery is granted the power to unleash an unstoppable monster for one hour at a time.

finally, New Challengers debuts in December written by Snyder with art by Andy Kubert. The comic is a reboot of the classic Challengers of the Unknown with a “new cast” and “new mission.”

At the event Lee said more talent and series would be coming down the road later this year.
