Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick(s): Bloodshot Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4 (Valiant Entertainment) –  There’s a funny thing this week. There’s really only two comics I can’t wait to pick up from my LCS, and both are from Valiant: Bloodshot: Salvation #1 and Secret Weapons #4. While I’ve read both, I want to reread them both in print without the review copy watermark on them.

Mr. Crypt #1 (Alterna) – It’s a living skeleton and the comic is about $1.50. What’s not to love?

Paul

Top Pick: Jean Grey #7 (Marvel) – I’ve really been enjoying this series and seeing Jean meeting up with other heroes and learning from them has been fun. But to be totally honest, I’m really just looking forward to seeing Scarlet Witch in this issue. Not too much of a fan boy, eh?

Super Sons #8 (DC Comics) – This is a fun, action filled super hero book that you all should be reading.

U.S.Avengers #10 (Marvel) – I’m interested to see how the fall of Hydra will effect this team, and looking forward to them going out to look for Cannonball. This book is hit or miss with me, and the Secret Empire tie ins were just alright, so I’m hoping things pick up.

X-Men Gold #12 (Marvel) – This book has been a good read, even though I do have a few issues on how some characters have been depicted or altogether pushed to the side (looking at Storm). I would like to see this book be more of a team feel like the first few issues were; lately is just feels like ‘the tales of Shadowcat and Colossus’ with the rest of the team just popping up as support.

Shay

Batwoman #7 (DC Comics) – Kate and her dad spend some time stranded in the first installment of the Fear and Loathing story arc.

Harley Quinn #28 (DC Comics) – Harley’s running for office. An anti-heroine for the people!

Harley Quinn Batman Day Special (DC Comics) – I’m all for anything Harley related especially when we get to see her toxic relationship fable with Joker. Here’s to hoping that she stays smart and stays single .

Luke Cage #5 ( Marvel) – It’s going down in New Orleans and I’ve got popcorn.

Brett

Top Pick: Batman: The Red Death #1 (DC Comics) – I’m all in with DC’s latest even Metal and this one gives us the scoop on one of the alternate worlds’ Batman. I’ve read it and holy crap is it good.

Catalyst Prime: Superb #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – I’ve been sucked into the Catalyst Prime world and this series is standing out in a teenage superhero sort of way that has enough different to make it a must read.

Dark Ark #1 (AfterShock) – You know the story of Noah… but what about that other ark?

Misbegotten: Runaway Nun #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Haven’t read this yet but it feels like the grindhouse sort of concept and movie that I really enjoy.

World of Animosity #1 (AfterShock) – This amazing comic world expands with this new series and is absolutely a world you should be checking out if you haven’t already.

Review: Secret Weapons #2

SW_002_VARIANT_DE-LA-TORRE“Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer, writer of the international sensation Arrival, joins forces with Harvey Award-nominated artist Raúl Allén (WRATH OF THE ETERNAL WARRIOR) for the next electrifying chapter in Valiant’s latest prestige format epic!”

Do you want to know what one of the most exciting new series is this year? Hint: you’re about to read a review about its second issue.

Written by Eric Heissera and with art by Raul Allen (with Patricia Martin)  Secret Weapons  is a book that focuses on the rejects from Toyo Harada’s psiot activation program. For those unfamiliar with what that means in the Valiant Universe psiots are people with latent superhuman powers that require activation, a potentially deadly and very painful process, before the nature of those powers are revealed. You may end up with the ability to fly, talk to and control technology, or make inanimate objects glow. Somewhat brightly.

While books like Harbinger, Imperium, Generation Zero and Harbinger Renegade focus on characters with useful, often powerful abilities, Secret Weapons centers around a group of characters who have some less than useful abilities, to put it politely, and hilariously useless to put it honestly.

But when somebody is hunting those psiots whose “failed” activations have left them with some pretty pointless powers (one guy can generate things from thin air – but has no control over what he generates), then alone they’re basically screwed. Thankfully for them (and us), a saviour in the form of the technopath Livewire, one of the more famous – and powerful – activated psiots who has appeared to help to guide these rejected misfits and help them stay alive long enough to get some answers.

Secret Weapons #2 follows the incredible quality of the first issue with an equally strong offering; Heisserer is able to move the story along at a relatively brisk pace while simultaneously keeping it slow enough for the reader to learn more about the characters involved – although credit should also be given to Raul Allen and Patricia Martin and the way that they bring to life these wonderfully eccentric characters into a story that’s happening in the background of the Valiant Universe.

There’s a brilliant fight scene that showcases the forced inventiveness these characters must have with their abilities that had me genuinely smiling from ear to ear as I read it. That I was also unsure of whether any of the characters involved would end up six feet under is both a testament to Heisserer’s skill and the advantage to using characters there were previously unknown to the reader.

Allen and Martin’s are  work is doubly impressive when Livewire enters a…. different realm…

This is simply a beautifully constructed comic in every way possible.

I said in my previous review that this was shaping up to be another home run for Valiant, and I’ll stand by that. Secret Weapons is without a doubt the best comic with the word Secret in it’s title this summer; whether you’re a Valiant fan or not, make sure you’re reading this.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: Ether Vol 1 Trade Paperback (Dark Horse) – The very funny and out there story that is part Doctor Strange and part detective whodunit story has collected the first arc. The world in Ether reminds me of Roger Rabbit, while the art style channels a style long forgotten like Steamboat Willie. I highly recommend this, and I think most everyone will find something to enjoy, smile, and laugh at.

Curse Words Vol 1 Trade Paperback (Image) – This book is a collected volume of the hilarious first arc of the adventures of a Wizard named Wizord who was sent to do something terrible, is trying to do something good, but also keeps doing something terrible. He becomes a hipster and realizes he loves our planet. You also have a talking koala sidekick, and so much more.

Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) – This book penned by the jokester writer/artist extraordinaire Chip Zdarsky is a return to the down on his luck Spidey we all knew and loved. It’s a sister book to ASM, and will focus on the comedic side of things, and a more lighthearted jumping on point for old and new readers.

Aquaman #26 (DC Comics) – This has been a great run, but #25 cranked the volume (unintentional water reference) up to 11! The art is some of the best you will find in a comic, and the story is setting up something massively epic.

Batman #27 (DC Comics) – We return to Batman’s past again for the War of Jokes and Riddles. King has crafted an interesting (if somewhat polarizing) run that I’ve enjoyed. I cannot wait to see where this goes, as it’s been a blast so far.

Alex

Top Pick: Secret Weapons #2 (Valiant) – A team made up of people with useless powers? Check. A writer who is incredibly talented? Check. An artist whose layouts are beautifully simple yet packed full of details? Check. A genuinely exciting comic? Oh yeah.

Rapture #3 (Valiant) – What do you get when a man who refuses to believe in magic has to travel to a land where magic is incredibly prevalent? You get Ninjak in Rapture, and reading his fish out of water among the other, more comfortable, characters. The story is another example of Valiant delivering a solid miniseries that reads very well as an introduction to their characters and the universe as a whole.
