Review – 27 Second Set #1

27 Second Set #1 CoverI gushed over the first volume of Charle Soule‘s 27.  The series is about a rock star who wants to make it through his 27th birthday.   You see, all the great ones have died at that age.  Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin and most recently Amy Winehouse.  The first series ran towards the mystical side of things, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was solid.  Here’s what the official description for the first issue.

The next, new reader-friendly chapter in the 27 saga begins HERE. Almost a year after the events of 27: FIRST SET, Will Garland, down-on-his-luck rock star, is desperate to recapture his lost fame. How far will he go, and will he encounter more cosmic craziness and intense action on the way? Answers: very far indeed, and absolutely. But on the plus side – groupies!

The fantastic thing about 27 Second Set #1 is Soule’s focus on Garland the person and his struggle.  Like the music he’s now playing, the focus of the comic is personal and in a way, the series is muted, matching the amazing art by Renzo Podesta.  The first issue completely focuses on Garland and his attempt to work his way back into the spotlight.  He’s doing it the hard way, using his talent and hard work to get there.  You can’t help by cheer for him and feel bad about the real world state of the music industry.

The ending of the issue sets up the conflict to come, and my guess is future issues won’t be quite as focused on Garland the person as the first, but if they have the heart of the first one, it won’t matter.  Much like I want to do for Garland the character, I’m cheering for the series.  Amazing story, amazing art, there’s everything here to cheer for.
