TKO’s Second Wave of Comics is Now Available

TKO Studios burst upon the comic book scene last December with a bold new strategy to binge-release entire miniseries in both collectors box sets and trade paperbacks. Their first wave of books included series by some of comics’ best writers and artists.

TKO has released their second wave of books. The titles include:

Talking Comics – Giants #1

Review: Black Panther World of Wakanda #5

It’s going down! Roxane Gay brings pure fire in yet another amazing issue of Black Panther: World of Wakanda. There are Midnight Angels gone rogue, Dora Milaje taking it to the streets and cleaning house all Wakanda and, Folami acting most foul in her attempt to quench her blood lust. Everything about this issue from cover to cover is amazing and I can’t wait until the next issue. There’s so much richness, culture, and purity in this story that you feel attached to the characters. Even the villainess Folami is relatable, you still want her caught and dealt with but, you feel for her. Gay’s amazing writing gives an emotional depth and a realism to every character that she brings to life on the pages of this issue and I am here for it.

Alitha E. Martinez lays down some beautiful, dimensional lines and Roberto Poggi follows up with amazing color that brings the characters and Wakanda to life. There are beautiful and distinctive facial features for all of the variety of shades of color that the story showcases. People look like real people of color and it is wonderful, Martinez even shows different body types and characteristics making this issue even more gripping and making each character even more a part of the story.

This issue tackles so many great issues like rage, sexual assault, exploitation of the weak, and sexuality. What’s great about it is that Gay makes sure to show the ugly and beautiful sides of life in a way that makes everything seem real, human and relatable. The care she takes with the lesbian love story of two of my favorite Midnight Angels is pure magic, instead of exploiting it she makes it a part of the story because the characters are a part of the story not because they are lesbians. The way she shows the Dora dispensing justice throughout the city and keeping its bad guys in check is engaging and, the way she shows Folami’s rage and vengeance makes her relatable even though we all know she’s wrong. This issue highlights all of the amazing things that any sensible reader would love about the series and makes it accessible enough to draw in new readers. Dawn of the Midnight Angels concludes in an amazing way and I’m looking forward to the next story arc and seeing all of the great things that I am sure this stellar team has in store for us.

DAWN OF THE MIDNIGHT ANGELS: CONCLUSION!

Officers. Rebels. Lovers…Ayo and Aneka, a.k.a. the Midnight Angels, now have new monikers thrust upon them: Leaders.

Graphic Policy Celebrates Women’s History Month: Our Favorite Women in Comics

patsy walker aka hellcat 1 featuredLogan: Kate Leth, Brittney Williams, Megan Wilson, and Rachelle Rosenberg’s Hellcat has been a joyful celebration of superheroes, young people, and queerness. I will miss its humor, chibi style art, and especially my bi bae Ian Soo when it ends in a couple months.

faith-8-feat

Alex: Faith (Valiant) I really can’t understate just how enjoyable this series is. There have definitely been some issues stronger than others, but each and every one in the ongoing series (and preceding miniseries) has been nothing short of a pleasure to read.

Jody Houser, Marguerite Sauvage and the revolving cast of artists have taken Faith to stunning heights in an effortlessly charming and warm series that will make you fall in love with comics all over again.

black-panther-world-of-wakanda-4-featured

Shay: Gail Simone brings me LIFE! As does Roxane Gay! And I’m really loving Amanda Conner and her hubby’s direction for Harley Quinn! Also, loving Marguerite Bennett for the realistic portrayal of lesbians in Batwoman!

animosity3

Joe: One of the best titles in the last year is Animosity from Aftershock. This fantastic story is written by Marguerite Bennett who has taken the comic book world by storm lately, and drawn by Rafael de Latorre. Basically, society has collapsed when animals can talk and decide to take over the world from humanity. Instead of a boy and his dog adventure like we’ve seen so many times, we get a girl and her dog. Jesse and her hound, Sandor are not only an awesome pair, but the story is about Jesse’s growth into womanhood without a mother figure. Sandor knows he cannot help like her mother could, but he learns to rely on the other female animals to guide her. It’s brilliant, and everyone should be reading it.

nocenti-daredevil

Patrick: Ann Nocenti’s run on Daredevil blew my mind when it was coming out. It was so different from what I’d been used to seeing from Denny O’Neil and Frank Miller – a strange urban poetry that was as close to magic realism as I’d ever seen in mainstream comics. With an off-kilter humor – the Human Torch showing up in a tight t-shirt reading “Bad!” – twisted romance, and psychodrama. Her writing was like nothing else on the stands.

A huge thanks to the editors and publishers behind the scenes who made a ton of great comics happen: Jenette Kahn, cat yronwode, Diana Schutz, Louise Jones/Simonson, Ann Nocenti, Shelly Bond, Alisa Kwitney, and most especially the inestimable Karen Berger.

Troy: It was a bit short lived, but I think there was a Defender’s title by Cullen Bunn about Valkyrie being tasked with assembling Midgard’s Valkyrie. Fear Itself the Fearless was kind of the prelude series to that. I really would have loved to see this series fleshed out.

monstress #5 featured

Madison: It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with Monstress and Bitch Planet. They’re not for everyone, but they’re two of my go-to recommendations for people who love science fiction or fantasy. Elizabeth Breitweiser, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Jordie Bellaire consistently blow me away with their incredible colors.

Brett: I’m slightly obsessed with M. Goodwin’s Tomboy which is published by Action Lab: Danger Zone. The series follows a teenage girl whose best friend is murdered in a corrupt cop/conspiracy and she gets posessed by an avenging ghost in a way. Think Kick-Ass but a teenage girl in the lead and a manga influence to it all. An amazing mix of horror, action, and manga the hero Addison is a teenager that can kick ass and get some vengeance.

Review: Black Panther: World of Wakanda #4

black_panther_world_of_wakanda__4Folami is running on a body full of nanites. Let that sink in. Folami is so hell bent on vengeance that she let a stranger pump her full of nanites so she could be even more of an asskicker. If that doesn’t tell you that you’re going to need some popcorn to get through this issue, nothing will.

The events of Black Panther: World of  Wakanda take place before Black Panther #1 and there’s a whole lot of awesome going on. The phenomenal woman that is Roxane Gay weaves a story full of passion, revenge, love and power. It’s so well written that I had to put it down every few pages to digest the words on the page and the T she was spilling. This was Beyoncé level girl power in comic book form.

The Dora Milaje have always been some of the baddest chicks of the Marvel universe, they are fierce, they are strong, they can kick your whole ass and, look hella fierce doing it. This inaugural issue of this new arc focuses on them, a whole lot of rebuilding and, a hint that something shady this way comes. Obviously, I’m here for it but, I’m pretty sure you will be too.

I’m resisting every urge to go full on spoiler tsunami because, this was such a good read that I want to tell everyone, everything about it. But, I also want you to buy this comic so I’m turning my spoiler meter down to 3. This issue shows us the aftermath of the Thanos and Black Order attack, the efforts to rebuild, the guilt of lovers who weren’t there to save their queen in the fight because they were off doing loverlike things. Gay serves up a Shakespearean level divided kingdom drama that is flawlessly executed and beautifully crafted.

The side story of two of my favorite Midnight Angels, Ayo and Aneke, add just enough extra brooding tension to the issue that you can see it becoming an arc on its own. (If you don’t know who the Midnight Angels are, get on that because if the Dora are some of the baddest chicks, the Angels can take their lunch money making them THE baddest). This issue shows the guilt and sadness they feel over by being there for the attack, it also shows us the type of Dora/Chieftans daughter Folami is and, is a precursor to what can and, probably will come next from her rash thinking and quick temper. There’s a crossing of Folami’s path and Ayo and Aneke’s that thanks to Folami’s new upgrades will undoubtedly lead to a bad end for at least one of them. We get to see a serial rapist put down and the unforeseen consequences that action will have.

Alitha E. Martinez penciled some kick ass facial features and showcased all the ways that a black woman can be beautiful. There wasn’t a hint of a white person dipped in brown crayon, or one face fits all with a different haircut that you usually see in comic books. And, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg regulated every shade of brown to perfection giving us actual differences in each characters melanin tone.

This issue was chocked full of storylines all interwoven in a way that shows all things are connected and, I’m looking forward to the butterfly effect dial waves that this will send throughout the series as a whole. Gay serves up a lot on a small plate and a lesser writer would have had so many bumps in the road, through clunky dialogue and unnecessary exposition but, Gay is a pro and not a word, bubble or scene is wasted. The handling of the lesbian relationships between Ayo and Aneke is human, real and compassionate. In the short number of pages that showcase it, there’s never a sense of putting on a show or pandering. The way she handles sexual assault is flawless, showcasing the shame and fear. This was a mostly female crew and what they pulled off I’m sure will inspire a legion of little girls who think they can’t, to take up thief pens and pencils and do it too! This issue is a fearless, well thought out tribute to the comic gods and they are well pleased.

Roxane Gay Pulls Her Book from Simon & Schuster Due to Milo Deal

roxane-gayAuthor, professor, editor Roxane Gay has announced that she is pulling her next book from Simon & Schuster in response to the publisher’s decision to publish a book by alt-right leader/figurehead Milo Yiannopoulos.

The book, How to Be Heard was to be published in March 2018 by TED Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The controversy began when the publisher announced it would publish a book by Yiannopoulos with a $250,000 advance. He’s a high-profile leader of the alt-right and has organized harassment campaigns against those he disagrees with for the lulz. He rose to prominence through GamerGate, the online troll group mainly focused on video games, when he latched onto their cause.

On Monday the CEO of the publisher sent a letter to authors that the upcoming Yiannopoulos book would not contain hate speech (though one wonders how much will be plagiarized).

Gay said she wasn’t interested in doing business with a publisher that would give Milo a platform.

Though TED Books and Threshold are vastly different imprints, they both reside within Simon & Schuster and so I guess I’m putting my money where my mouth is. And to be clear, this isn’t about censorship. Milo has every right to say what he wants to say, however distasteful I and many others find it to be. He doesn’t have a right to have a book published by a major publisher but he has, in some bizarre twist of fate, been afforded that privilege. So be it. I’m not interested in doing business with a publisher willing to grant him that privilege. I am also fortunate enough to be in a position to make this decision. I recognize that other writers aren’t and understand that completely.

You can read her full statement at Buzzfeed.

The issue with Simon & Schuster extends to the comic book industry for many reasons, just one of which is the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s signing onto a letter defending the book publisher and decrying what they see as censorship.

Gay herself is a comic book writer herself and currently writes Black Panther: World of Wakanda published by Marvel Comics. Marvel’s CEO Ike Perlmutter is a Trump supporter and will be involved in some compacity with the administration. It’s unknown if her boss’ stance there will impact her further involvement with the comic publisher.
