The ‘90s are back! In celebration of Marvel Studios’ X-Men ’97, a follow-up to the classic nineties X-Men: The Animated Series coming soon to Disney+, Marvel’s hottest artists are showing their love for the decade in Marvel ’97 Variant Covers.

On sale throughout February, these new covers capture the essence of this blockbuster era by depicting your favorite heroes in their iconic ‘90s looks, reuniting ‘90s lineups, and paying homage to memorable ‘90s covers. It’s an stellar journey through the decade that transformed the comic book industry and it’s just the start of a slew of upcoming X-Men ’97 related Marvel Comics announcements!

Punisher #1 delivers a classic tale of revenge

When we last saw the Punisher, Frank Castle was off to a different world after his corruption by the Hand. On to a new adventure. Punisher #1 isn’t that, instead it takes things back to basics with a new character behind the skull but at its heart the same story of revenge.

Writer David Pepose is a master at remixing familiar. In the numerous series he’s written, he’s taken familiar characters and stories and delivered a twist to them. Punisher #1 is a familiar character and a familiar story but overall, the debut is played rather straight. Pepose goes back to the core of the character, a man who has been wronged and goes on a rampage of revenge against those who wronged him. And, it works, it works really well.

Pepose keeps things simple for the comic delivering an easy to understand origin, lots of action, some solid kills, and with the most potential, detectives looking for this new Punisher as he’s the prime suspect in the death of his family. Yes, the comic really does keep things simple, it’s another tale of revenge due to a family being caught in the crossfire. This one isn’t an accident though (depending on which origin of Castle you’re going with), instead it looks to be a deliberate hit and attack based on some past that’s hinted at and sure to be revealed.

What’s the Punisher without cool kills? Rather boring. Thankfully, artist Dave Wachter delivers a flair for the destruction with color by Dan Brown and lettering by Cory Petit. The comic looks solid with a sleek design in costume, weapons, and full of action. There’s also a solid focus on the art when it comes to the investigation of the death of the Punisher’s family with solid perspectives and overall look that feels like a gritty noir story instead of high flying action. The comic looks solid overall with visuals that are a treat for fans of action.

Punisher #1 delivers a new main character, new mission, new sidekicks, and lots of new weapons. But, at its core, it’s the same tale of revenge taking the concept of the character back to his roots. This is a more grounded take on the character, taking things down a notch from the ever convoluted and “superheroic” nature of Frank Castles’ version. Here, we get what works and works so well, a tale of revenge with the action of John Wick. It’s simple and straight to the point and some times that’s exactly what you’re looking for.

Wolverine claws his way through Marvel history with variant covers in January 2024

Next year marks 50 years of Wolverine being the best there is and Marvel will celebrate its most ferocious hero in various ways including new series like the recently announced Wolverine: Madripoor Knights, special reprints, and a new variant cover program!

Launching in January, the Wolverine Wolverine Wolverine Variant Covers sees Logan take over the most iconic covers in Marvel Comics history, filling in as each and every character along the way! The covers gave artists the chance to spotlight their favorite Wolverine costumes, identities, and alternate versions, and also feature other members of the “Snikt Family.” It’s the perfect way to celebrate one of Marvel’s most ubiquitous and storied heroes and proves that there’s no such thing as too much Wolverine!

Revisit Moon Knight’s most memorable moments in Knight’s End Variant Covers

Death is looming for Marvel’s Crescent Crusader in the pages of Moon Knight by writer Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio. The character’s current blockbuster run is gearing up for a dramatic turning point in October’s Moon Knight #28, the start of a three-part saga titled “The Death of Moon Knight.” The story will present the climactic battle between Moon Knight and Black Spectre, and while it may mark the tragic end of Marc Spector’s latest era, his vengeance will surely outlive him!

SDCC 2023: A new Punisher makes his debut in November

A new Punisher will make his vengeful debut in an all-new ongoing comic series! Revealed during the MARVEL: Heroes, Hulks, and Super-Soldiers panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the new comic series will be penned by award-winning writer David Pepose and drawn by artist Dave Wachter, known for his gritty and noir-inspired art style. Covers will be illustrated by artist and industry veteran Rod Reis.

Last week, Marvel Comics teased a single question: Who is the Punisher? Series writer David Pepose revealed the answer: Joe Garrison. Pepose has described the character as “Danny Ketch to Frank’s Johnny Blaze.”

In this action-packed new Punisher saga, Frank Castle has disappeared, but evil will always need to be punished. With all-new threats rising to claim innocent victims, criminals will need to beware of a dangerous vigilante hunting them from the shadows. Enter a new Punisher: retired S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops agent Joe Garrison. But what brings him back into action? What put Joe Garrison on his path of vengeance? And when the smoke clears, will he even make it out alive?

The Marvel Universe will meet the next generation of punishment this fall! Don’t miss the start of a new Punisher era on shelves at your local comic shop starting November 8.
