Free Comics for Librarians from Papercutz

NICKELODEON MAGAZINEBudget-crunched librarians will soon be receiving some respite thanks to a new program from Papercutz. The publisher announced today that they will be supplying 100 free copies of Nickelodeon Magazine to libraries that support comics programming. It’s part of an effort by the publisher to fuel a growing trend in the school and public library space– “ComicCons” and other events focused on the fastest growing category in publishing – graphic novels.

Comic book conventions are well-known for a variety of attractions including creator appearances, costumes and, of course, exclusive promotional material from publishers. While many librarians have reached out to the comics creative community for appearances at events and patrons have picked up the costuming challenge, promotional items have been handled on an ad hoc basis, depending on the largesse of publishers or individual creators. This new program ensures that no comics-themed event will have to do without giveaways that incentivize reading.

Interested librarians simply need to contact Papercutz VP of Marketing, Sven Larsen six to eight weeks before their event. As soon as Papercutz receives a librarian’s request (including details of the planned event) they will dispatch 100 copies of the latest issue of Nickelodeon Magazine absolutely free (the library just has to pay for shipping).

More Lunch Witch from Papercutz

LUNCH WITCH 1It looks like Grunhilda may have found some job security after all. The title character of Deb Lucke‘s debut graphic novel, The Lunch Witch is set to star in three more volumes from kids graphic novel publisher Papercutz. The deal, was announced today.

Published in March of this year, The Lunch Witch has been a critical and commercial success, receiving positive reviews and performing well at retail. That momentum looks to continue over the summer as Lucke appears at a number of different trade and consumer events. Fresh off an appearance at the Toronto Comic Arts Fair, Lucke just participated in the ABA’s “Author Speed Dating” event at BEA and signed copies of her book at the Papercutz booth during BookCon.

LUNCH WITCH 2Lucke and the Papercutz team are also coming up with ways to keep Lunch Witch fans engaged while they wait for the next volume. Grunhilda is very active on social media with Twitter and Instagram, and Tumblr pages and she’s recently launched her own website – thelunchwitch.com. Future social media plans include You Tube videos and other transmedia efforts to keep the narrative progressing while Lucke finishes the next book in the series.

That’s bad news for Grunhilda’s students but good news for fans of The Lunch Witch. It looks like she’ll be serving up Hansel and Gretel Pie for a long time to come!

The Lunch Witch Vol. 1 by Deb Lucke is available at bookstores and comic book shops everywhere. Volume 2 is scheduled for release in Fall 2016.

Papercutz Celebrates 10 Years With a New Print Program

Papercutz 1As publishers across the country prepare to converge on New York City for this year’s Book Expo, one company is also getting ready to celebrate an anniversary. Papercutz, the children’s graphic novel publisher turns 10 years old this year and the company has a some special plans to mark the occasion.

Founded in February 2005 by industry veterans Terry Nantier and Jim Salicrup, the company was initially formed to take advantage of a vacuum in material for kids in graphic novel publishing at the time.

From an initial small stable of licensed properties the company has expanded to work with a who’s who of the entertainment industry including Disney, Dreamworks, SONY, Fox, and LEGO and noted creators like Sho Murase, Riff Rebs, Scott Lobdell, Emmanuel Guibert and Lewis Trondheim. The future looks equally bright with new series from the minds of Neil Gaiman and Stan Lee and a “first look” deal with Nickelodeon. Now Papercutz, is celebrating their legacy with a special anniversary print program that pays tribute to some of the franchises they’ve worked with over the past decade.

Papercutz 2The program debuts at this year’s BookCon in New York City, where the publisher will unveil a special print featuring Nancy Drew by acclaimed artist Stephanie Buscema. Hot on the heels of that debut will be a Classics Illustrated print by Riff Rebs featuring the legendary Captain Nemo that will be offered for the first time at the American Library Association Conference in San Francisco. Plans call for four more posters in the series, debuting at special events throughout the rest of the year. Each print will be limited to 250 copies, numbered and marked to indicate the extent of the run. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the prints will go to help different charities including the Children’s Book Council, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Hero Initiative. Fans who are unable to attend one of the events where the prints are sold will also be given the chance to purchase the prints online or through their local retailer.

Papercutz 10TH Anniversary Print: “Nancy Drew” will be available for purchase at BookCon and from selected bookstores and comic book stores across the United States and Canada on May 30th, 2015.

Papercutz Collects The Only Living Boy

The Only Living BoyAs Children’s Book Week 2015 kicks off its celebration of beloved children’s characters, young readers can look forward to a new hero hitting their shelves early next year. David Gallaher and Steve Ellis, the award-winning creative team behind digital hits High Moon and Box 13 are teaming up with Papercutz to bring their webcomic sensation The Only Living Boy to bookstores and libraries everywhere. The publisher has announced a multi-volume deal with Gallaher and Ellis’ Bottled Lightning Studio, brokered by Dara Hyde at the Hill Nadell Literary Agency, that will see the webcomic collected into a series of paperback and hardcover volumes beginning in March 2016. Publishing of the print collections will begin with a 72 page first volume entitled “Prisoners of the Patchwork Planet” set to arrive in March 2016. Plans call for subsequent books to be released on a regular schedule with the entire story eventually collected in six volumes.

The Only Living Boy tells the story of 12-year old Erik Farrell, who runs away from home only to find himself without his memory, stranded on a patchwork planet with danger lurking around every corner. Every day is a struggle to survive. Erik quickly allies himself with Morgan, a mermaid warrior and Thea, a teenage princess from a mysterious insect race. He’ll need their help to escape the Dreaded Lord Baalikar and the evil Doctor Once and maybe, one day, find his way back home.

The Only Living Boy Vol. 1: Prisoners of the Patchwork Planet will be available in bookstores and comic book stores across the United States and Canada on March 8th, 2016.
