NYCC 2019: Amy Reeder Takes on Amethyst from Wonder Comics

Announced at DC’s Wonder Comics panel at New York Comic Con, Amy Reeder will be writing, drawing, and coloring the brand new Amethyst monthly comic series launching February 2020.

Following the character’s triumphant reintroduction in the pages of Young Justice, the new Amethyst series follows teenager Amy Winston, a.k.a. Princess Amethyst, as she returns to her magical kingdom to find it in ruins, her subjects vanished, and none in the realm of Gemworld still loyal to her house. To solve this mystery, restore House Amethyst, and save her family, Amy must find new allies and confront dark secrets on a deadly quest to the farthest reaches of Gemworld.

NYCC 2019: VIZ Media Announces New Manga, Novels, and More for 2020

VIZ Media expands its publishing catalog as it announced a wide range of new acquisitions set for summer 2020 release during its official panels held this past weekend at New York Comic Con.

New VIZ Signature titles arriving in summer 2020 include Maison Collector’s Edition, the definitive release of the classic Rumiko Takahashi series, Naoki Urasawa’s Mujirushi: The Sign of Dreams, and Ping Pong, the tale of two boys’ passion for table tennis from Eisner Award winner Taiyo Matsumoto. The inspiration for the Netflix Original series Kingdom, The Kingdom of the Gods, was also announced.

Shonen Jump titles announced at the Shonen Jump-dedicated panel include Masashi Kishimoto’s latest series Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachumaru; Act-Age, a gripping tale of an actor surviving her inner demons and Spy X Family, an action-packed comedy about a fake family that includes a spy, an assassin and a telepath. The official manga adaptation of the hit Rooster Teeth series RWBY: The Official Manga also receives a release as well as new novels from bestselling series Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece.

On the Shojo Beat side, new titles include Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Senki, the final installment of the popular fantasy series and Not Your Idol, a thriller about a former idol dealing with a psychotic stalker.

Last but not least, the roster of titles includes How Do We Relationship?, a rom-com about two college women in a “fake” relationship, and the massive, full-color guide Monster Hunter: World – Official Complete Works, a must have for fans of the video game franchise.

NYCC 2019: Magnetic Press Becomes Independent Under the Polarity Banner

Three years almost to the day after the acquisition of Magnetic Press was announced at New York Comic Con, the former Lion Forge imprint is announced to return to its status as full-service publisher under the David Steward II founded Polarity holding company, which also operates Lion Forge Comics and Oni Press.

Independently established in 2014 by founder Mike Kennedy, former publisher of Archaia Entertainment, Magnetic Press was acquired by Lion Forge in October of 2016 and rebranded as The Magnetic Collection. Kennedy has received numerous accolades in Magnetic’s first five years of operation, including 17 Eisner Award nominations over their first four consecutive years of eligibility.

Titles planned for 2020 include the dystopic fantasy Nils: The Tree of Life by Jerome Hamon and Antoine CarrionStreamliner by FaneParis 2119 by Zep and Dominique Bertail, and Gunland by Captain Artiglio. The coming year will also the continuation of sci-fi series Infinity 8 by Lewis Trondheim and ORPHANS by Roberto Recchioni and Emmanuel Mamucari, as well as the return of several popular series including KLAW by Ozanam and Jurion and The Ogre Gods by Hubert and Bertrand Gatignol. Other titles will be announced in the coming months, with Magnetic offering something for all ages across its diverse lineup. 

The company will also build a robust gaming catalogue with new original projects and more, adding to current titles like the graphic novel/RPG hybrid Hugo Broyler and the fantasy card game universe The World of Cassyno.

Magnetic Press, LLC will be distributed in both the direct and book markets exclusively by Diamond, with an active digital first strategy through Comixology.

NYCC 2019: Harley Quinn Animated Series Gets a Debut Date

DC Universe continues to deliver new content, robust community engagement, and real-world experiences to its members. During the grand opening reception of a new, pop-up activation titled, DCU HQ during New York Comic Con, the subscription service highlighted updates to the platform and previewed new content coming in 2020.

During the opening event news on the Harley Quinn animated original series was announced including the debut date!

Harley Quinn will debut on the DC Universe service on November 29, 2019.

DCU HQ also included an art retrospective dedicated to Harley Quinn and the character’s colorful history throughout animation, comics and film titled The Fantabulous Evolution of One Harley Quinn Gallery. Included in the gallery space are props from the hotly anticipated film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn), in theaters February 7, 2020, from Warner Bros. Pictures: her fan-favorite Mallet, Harley Grenades, Fur-Covered Brass Knuckles, Black and Red Roller Skates donned by Harley Quinn herself for a hard-hitting Roller Derby scene, and many more never-before-displayed items. 

In addition, many original art pieces are on display including, a development sketch of Harley Quinn for her first appearance in “Joker’s Favor”;  original cel art from “Batman, the Animated Series”; comic book covers by Amanda Conner, Rachel Dodson and Jim Lee among others; plus original art by Bruce Timm and Amanda Conner created exclusively for the pop-up gallery.

NYCC 2019: Stranger Things Returns with Into the Fire in January 2020

Dark Horse Comics and Netflix are expanding the world of Stranger Things in the newest Stranger Things comic series, Stranger Things: Into the Fire!

In 1984, several years after escaping Hawkins, two survivors of Dr. Brenner’s experiments seek out their lost fellow experiment, number Nine, who needs their help now more than ever.

Writer Jody Houser, line artist Ryan Kelly, inker Le Beau Underwood, colorist Triona Farrell, and letterer Nate Piekos, explore the true effects of Dr. Brenner’s meddling experiments in Stranger Things: Into the Fire.

In Stranger Things: Into the Fire, years after escaping Hawkins Lab, two of Dr. Brenner’s former subjects try to return to their live normal lives. When news reaches them that the lab was shut down they go on a harrowing search for Nine, a powerful pyrokinetic, whose shattered psyche threatens to burn them all to ashes if they can’t find her and free her from her own malevolent imagination.

NYCC 2019: Lion Forge and Binc Launch The Forge Fund for Comic Retailers

At New York Comic Con, David Steward II and Annie Philbrick of the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) greeted a room full of retailers at the Diamond Comics breakfast with the introduction of The Forge Fund, a renewal of their partnership to support direct market retailers and their employees in times of hardship.

Lion Forge has donated $100,000.00 of seed money to Binc to establish this special fund for comic shops. In addition to this initial investment, going forward, 5% of proceeds from select titles will go to Forge Fund, with this week’s release of the Gail Simone written Catalyst Prime series Seven Days to be the first in the program.

This new fund gives the Foundation the ability to assist those working in the comic book industry who are facing financial emergencies today and in the future.

The Binc Foundation provides confidential financial assistance to comic retailers and booksellers, who have a demonstrated need arising from severe hardship or emergency circumstances. Retailers and their families who are suffering from financial challenges due to illness, death in the family, expenses associated with escaping domestic violence, homelessness prevention, natural disaster recovery and more now have a place to call when help is needed.

NYCC 2019: Oni Announces Fights from Joel Christian Gill

Oni Press has announced the publication of the next book by Strange Fruit: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History creator Joel Christian Gill, detailing his upbringing and relationship to the violence that surrounded it.

Fights: One Boy’s Triumph Over Violence is Joel Christian Gill’s visceral and deeply affecting memoir chronicling his youth and coming of age as a poor Black child in a chaotic southern landscape of rough city streets and foreboding backwoods during the crack cocaine boom of the 1980s.

Propelled into a world filled with uncertainty and desperation, young Joel is pushed toward using violence to solve his problems by everything and everyone around him. But fighting doesn’t always yield the best results for a confused and sensitive kid who yearns for a better, more fulfilling life than the one he was born into.

This memoir arrives in finer bookstores and comic shops in January 2020.

NYCC 2019: Dawn of X Delivers Wolverine #1 in February

Powers of X #6 hits shelves in just a few days, concluding the first step in Jonathan Hickman’s groundbreaking new era for the world of mutants. Following that, the “Dawn of X” titles will explore the bold new way the X-Men operate in the Marvel Universe…beginning with Wolverine #1!

Announced at the Marvel Comics: X-Men – Dawn of X Panel at New York Comic Con, Wolverine #1 will kick off in February, following Wolverine as he takes it upon himself to defend the new nation of Krakoa from the humans who would exploit its extraordinary resources. With a new mission comes a new creative team, and Wolverine couldn’t ask for a better one to guide him in his new role.

The new series is written by author Ben Percy who is teaming up with artists Adam Kubert and Victor Bogdonavic.

Mutants may have created a paradise, but that paradise needs protecting. See Wolverine do what he does best in Wolverine #1 this February!

NYCC 2019: Peter Milligan and Jesús Hervas Explore a Tomorrow with Only Children

Berger Books has announced an intriguing new story for 2020, Tomorrow– a five-issue comic series by critically acclaimed and legendary writer Peter Milligan, breakout artist Jesús Hervas, and dynamic colorist James Devlin.

When a Russian computer virus jumps the species barrier and wipes out most of the adult population, the world falls precariously into the hands of the next generation.  In the wake of the devastation, musical prodigy Oscar Fuentes is separated from his twin sister Cira. Without the support of each other and stranded on opposite sides of the country, they’re swept into rapidly-evolving networks of gangs. NYCC 2019: AferShock Grapples with MMA in Kill A Man from Steve Orlando, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Alec Morgan, and Jim Campbell

At New York Comic Con, AfterShock announced Kill A Man, a brand new original graphic novel from writers Steve Orlando and Phillip Kennedy Johnson featuring art by Alec Morgan and lettering by Jim Campbell.

In the early days of Mixed Martial Arts, kickboxer icon DJ Bellyi slurs a queer opponent in the ring, and is beaten to death while his young son James watches in horror from the stands.

Sixteen years later, young James Bellyi has become an MMA star in his own right, with top-tier endorsements and an imminent title shot. But when James is outed as gay by an opponent in a press conference, he loses everything: his title shot, his fans, his team, even his family. To fight his way back, he turns to the only one left in the world willing to train him: Xavier Mayne, the man who killed his father.

The graphic novel will be released in two oversized 60-page volumes. Kill A Man is out early summer 2020.
