Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas #1Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Top Pick: DC Universe Rebirth #1 (DC Comics) – Wait, what??? A DC title on my list?  AND the top pick??  Yup…I am really looking forward to this Rebirth thing that’s coming up.  I didn’t get into New 52 (though I did read a few titles) but this looks like a good opportunity to dive into DC again.  I’m sure this will be something that is talked about for a long time, and I don’t want to be left out of the conversation.

Extraordinary X-Men #10 (Marvel) – The Apocalypse Wars are in full swing, and the X-Men are making their away across the different lands of Omega World trying to get back to their time and save their teacher in the process.  I’ve enjoyed reading this latest story arc; it’s been action filled and fun to see the younger X-Men spending their time in this world and growing into X-Men.

Mockingbird #3 (Marvel) – this has been an interesting read; Bobbi having numerous side effects from her exposure to the Super Soldier formula and the Infinity formula has lead to some weird things happening to her.  And not to mention keeping up with SHIELD and her spy duties.  All in a days work for her, and I am looking forward to see where this leads.

Scooby Apocalypse #1 (DC Comics) – Ok so now you’re thinking I’ve just totally lost it.  ANOTHER DC title on my pick list…and it’s Scooby Doo?!  This looks interesting to me; sounds like a great twist on a childhood classic and the redesign of the characters does look pretty cool (though I’m still on the fence about hipster Shaggy).  But this looks like a fun ride.

Monstress #6 (Image Comics) – Monstress is easily and very quickly becoming one of my favorite comics. Marjorie Liu has written an amazing fantasy story with great underlying themes, and Sana Takeda’s gorgeous illustration makes the characters and world feel real.

We(l)come Back #8 (BOOM! Studios) – I’m so sad that this is the final issue of the series! Sebela has taken an awesome concept (time traveling assassins) and fleshed it out into an amazing story with characters you love and root for.

Top Pick: Divinity II #2 (Valiant Entertainment) – A sequel to one of the best miniseries I’ve read in a long time always interests me. When the first issue actually lives up to expectations? I’m in.

Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas #1 (IDW Publishing) – I loved the graphic novel version of this, and having seen a sampling of the special features included in this 48 page comic when I had a chat with Troy Little, I’m super excited to get a chance to read the finished article.

Johnny Red #7 (Titan Comics) – I just love this series. The artwork, the story, the setting…  everything about this comic just works for me.

Judge Dredd #6 (IDW Publishing) – Didn’t the last issue just come out? I could probably find out, but I don’t care enough to find out. I’m just happy to read the next issue.

Top Pick: Tomboy #5 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Such a fantastic series that’s a bit horror, a bit action, a bit superhero and all staring a teenage girl into anime. This is a mature title that is grossly overlooked and one that is flying under the radar. Every issue has knocked it out of the park and I expect no less from this.

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 (Marvel) – Steve Rogers is back as his younger self and donning the mantle of Captain America once again. It’ll be interesting to see how this comic makes itself stand out from the Sam Wilson led one, and also how Steve acts now he’s back to the way he used to be.

East of West #26 (Image Comics) – It feels like forever since the last issue and that’s a shame because this apocalyptic Western is an amazing read with every issue.

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas #1 (IDW Publishing) – I read the full graphic novel, and now broken out in single issues, I’ll read it again. It perfectly captures the frenetic nature of the novel and movie that came out of it.

Nighthawk #1 (Marvel) – The Squadron Supreme character gets his own comic series. The fact David Walker is writing is is what has me really interested and how he makes the character stand on his own as opposed to a certain other big city vigilante from another publisher.

Mockingbird_1_CoverBobbi Morse. Codename: Mockingbird. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most versatile, resourceful and in-demand agent. But a string of missions gone wrong point to something rotten going on in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s own medical and recovery network. The more she digs, the more widespread the conspiracy becomes. How deep does it go? Can she find the culprit before it’s too late?

Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird, gets her own series, which makes sense as she may be getting more of the spotlight in Marvel’s live action branch. The series is an interesting start in that it makes very little sense. But, it’s not supposed to as writer Chelsea Cain explains in the back. This isn’t a first issue to enjoy on its own, it’s a piece of the bigger puzzle, and there lies the problem, judging the issue on its own.

The issue picks up on Bobbi getting an infusion of the Infinity Formula from Nick Fury and the question of what else that injection might have given her.

The good of the comic is it has a fantastic sense of humor in not just the dialogue and other text that’s presented, but also visual jokes too courtesy of artist Kate Niemczyk. Each visit to the doctor brings new quick jokes that make you linger on a panel and think about the backstory as to what the hell is going on. Think of it as the scene on Beetlejuice where they’re in the waiting room surrounded by the other dead.

The story though, I’m not quite sure how I feel. It’s a slow start if anything, and not sure it’s one that has me super excited for the second issue, and I think part of that is the fact it’s Bobbi Morse at the center. She’s similar to Black Widow in her kick ass abilities and the super spy aspect and coming out a week after the amazing Black Widow #1 isn’t in this comic’s favor. I expected something more akin to that issue, but instead this feels like it has more in common with Patsy Walker and Squirrel Girl in its more lighthearted comedic tone.

As a first issue, this didn’t hook me in the way other comics have, but that doesn’t make it bad at all, it’s just a slower start. Cain admits this is just a small piece of the bigger picture, so I’m not expecting a full personal judgement until I’ve read the first arc, or at least a few more issues. If you’re willing to do that, then you might want to check this out.

Top Pick: Voracious #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – If you had a time machine would you make a T-Rex burger? If you could read a comic about a time traveler opening a restaurant where he does just that, wouldn’t you? The first issue had the right balance of humour and a genuine ability to get you in the feels. Voracious is a series to pay attention too.

Detective Comics #50 (DC Comics) – The last two issues have been exactly what I have been looking for with Jim Gordon as Batman, and after only picking them up last week, I`m pumped to get a copy of #50, which s the first time I can say that honestly for Detective Comics since the mech-suit Batman debuted.

Haunted Mansion #1 (Marvel) – My wife is a big Disney fan, so I’m actually being a good husband and picking this up for her… however I am also really curious how the ride will be adapted into comic form, myself. Could be fun.

Howard the Duck #5 (Marvel) – There’s something hilariously ridiculous about Howard the Duck being given the Power Cosmic. That it`s actually being handled well is just mind blowing.

Ninjak #13 (Valiant) – The concluding part to what has been a terrific arc so far. Not the best place to start, but I can’t wait for Operation: Deadside’s finale.

Top Pick: Mockingbird #1 (Marvel) – I have to admit, I love Bobbi Morse.  When it was revealed she was taken by Skrulls and held hostage for years in Secret Invasion, I was thrilled to see her back.  It was a great return; her seeing her ex husband Hawkeye again (and teaming up in their own book, that sadly didn’t last), having her back with the Avengers, then Secret Avengers; then giving her a twist by getting the Infinity formula from Nick Fury when she needed blood to survive an attack.  But, as usually happens, liberties were taken with the character (false memories, lost memories, thinking she WAS the woman who was her cover) and Bobbi faded back into the shadows.  WELL now she’s back, and I am excited.  I’m guessing this will be based more off the Bobbi from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, but I’m hoping I’m wrong.  Not that I don’t like her tv counterpart…but I’m hoping for an exciting new take on a character I’ve liked for so long.

The Mighty Thor #5 (Marvel) – Thor vs. Odin!  Take a seat kiddies…this is going to be fun.

Uncanny Avengers #7 (Marvel) – I am only looking forward to this because it is a tie-in to Standoff, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the Avengers get involved in this.

The Vision #5 (Marvel) – If you are not reading this book yet, what the heck are you waiting for?  One of THE best of the new Marvel titles and I can’t wait to see the consequences when the secrets hiding in this book come to light.

Top Pick: Descender #11 (Image Comics) – One of my favorite comics on the market right now. The sci-fi story is solid and the art is absolutely beautiful. Every issue has delivered and then some.

The Bunker #15 (Oni Press) – Its felt like a while since the last issue, but every issue is fantastic. The series blends the future and present as we see individuals scramble to prevent (or is it make sure) a devastating future happens.

Legend of Wonder Woman #3 (DC Comics) – This is the Wonder Woman series we’ve been waiting for. Each issue has been fantastic so far.

Mockingbird #1 (Marvel) – In recent times Marvel has had mixed success when it comes to Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird. Her use at times has been great, and at other points so-so. With a higher profile on television it’ll be interesting to see what this series it like.

Voracious #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The first issue of this series caught me off guard and what I found was an entertaining series that has some fun with the whole celebrity chef/interesting eating phase that’s going on. I’ve been looking forward to seeing what the second issue would be like.

Bobbi Morse Flies Solo This March in Mockingbird #1!

Because you demanded it! That’s right, spinning out of her smash-hit, sold out S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary Special comes her very first ongoing series! Marvel has announced Mockingbird #1 – the new series from Chelsea Cain and Marvel newcomer Kate Niemczyk!

Bobbi Morse. Codename: Mockingbird. Former Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most versatile, deadly, and in-demand agent. But a string of missions gone wrong point to something strange going on inside S.H.I.E.L.D.’s own medical and recovery network. The more she digs, the more widespread the conspiracy becomes. Who’s behind it, and how deep does it go? More importantly – how far will Bobbi have to go in order to uncover the truth?

In an interview with Marvel.com Cain said:

Truly, the plot of the first five issues is rooted very much in Bobbi’s medial history. [Nick] Fury saved her life with a dose of Super Soldier Serum and Infinity Formula and I wanted to explore the fallout from that.

Marvel Announces Silver Surfer, Moon Knight, The Infinity Entity, Mockingbird, and X-Men ’92

At the Diamond Summit taking place before this weekend’s Baltimore Comic Con, Marvel announced a bunch of new series coming out in 2016 as part of their All-New, All-Different reboot/relaunch (and blowing that past the promised 55-60 new comics we were told would be a part of it).

Dan Slott, Laura Allred, and Mike Allred will return on Silver Surfer in 2016. Marvel said they would release more details tomorrow.

Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood will be taking over creative duties for Moon Knight, which will return in 2016.

Jim Starlin and Alan Davis will be returning to their Infinity epic with The Infinity Entity. The four issue miniseries will focus on Adam Warlock. The third part of their epic begins in April 2016.

Chelsea Cain will be writing Mockingbird in a new ongoing series. An artist has not been announced. The character has been a part of the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and her on again/off again spin-off series is back on again last I heard. So, another character from the live action universe getting a comic tie-in.

Spinning out of Secret Wars: Battleworld, artist Alti Firmansyah will team up with Chris Sims and Chad Bowers for an X-Men ’92 series. The series sees the team return to their world to open a new Xavier School with Cassandra Nova’s students enrolling too. The comic launches spring 2016.

Review: Mockingbird S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary

mockingbird001There has never been a better time to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.  Although Marvel’s top spy agency is never exactly under the radar, the cinematic universe has added new interesting to the organization as first Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, and then Maria Hill and the members of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pushed the group into the spotlight.  Riding the wave of the renewed interest was Mockingbird, a character that had previously died in the comics and was given new focus after her introduction into the television series.  Never a headliner, the character had a decent comic past, as a romantic interest for other heroes or as a superhero herself as a member of the Avengers.  What has never really happened though is a story which is up to par with what made the character one that could make it on to Earth’s strongest superhero team without any actual superpowers.

If there was ever to be a story about why Mockingbird made it into the team then this just might be it.  The story is a relatively simple one as she awakes one morning to find that her mentor is dead.  Not willing to take the official answer for the death, she leads her own investigation, one which spends the majority of its time in a morgue room.  Although there might not have ever really been anything in the character’s past to make her approachable or even likable, this does as good a job as any to focus on her character and to give her a makeover at the same time.  There is also a backup story which focuses on a new hero called the Red Widow, who comes off looking a bit like Black Widow’s teenage sidekick, though it is told in a way which is an interesting take on a superhero origin story.

Some might be turned off of the title from the start because of words like “Anniversary” being in the title, but this issue actually manages to surprise as one of the better releases for Marvel this week, and one which is not thrown into the monumental undertaking that is Secret Wars.  Instead it focuses on the character and the plot to tell a compact yet entertaining stories, with some great visuals as well.  The main story is much better than the backup story, but both are good enough to pass the test.  If this is any indication of the Marvel that is to be in the post-Secret Wars landscape, then it looks as though the company will have some nice surprises in store.
