Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Adventures of the Super Sons #1 (DC Comics) – Superboy and Robin are back in this new series and we have new villains that feel so appropriate. The last volume was fantastic and the interaction of these two make this series so much fun to read.

Arab of the Future Graphic Memoir Vol. 3 (MacMillan) – The third volume of Riad Sattouf’s graphic memoir of his childhood in the Middle East. The third volume covers 1985-1987 and his mother’s want to move to France leaving his father torn between family and traditions.

Captain America #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic for this brand new volume written by Ta-Nehisi Coates with art by Leinel Francis Yu. We’re psyched to see where this all goes from there.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #2 (Marvel) – It’s a cosmic road trip to see if there’s such a thing as predetermined destiny.

Dark Ark #9 (AfterShock Comics) – This new take on the Bible tale of Noah has been amazing with every issue. A fantastic infusion of horror.

DC Super Hero Girls: Out of the Bottle (DC Comics) – The latest graphic novel in the kids comic series focuses on mental health and making your own comics!

Death of the Inhumans #2 (Marvel) – The first issue surprised us as to how good it was. We’re excited to read more of this series which we… well not sure what we expected. This is far more than a mini-series, this feels like a major event that will have a big impact going forward.

Infinity Wars #1 (Marvel) – The Prime issue was good and we’re excited to see where the cosmic end of the Marvel Universe is heading.

Leviathan #1 (Image Comics) – John Layman and Nick Pittara’s new series about some dingbats who summon a giant monster from hell.

Mister Miracle #10 (DC Comics) – This series has been amazing and the tension only seems to be getting greater with each issue. This is comic of the year material.

Project Superpowers #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Can superheroes still save the day? Written by Rob Williams with art by Sergio Davila, the series seems to explore if the heroes of the past have relevance in the modern world.

The Raid #1 (Titan Comics) – Based on the cult film, we’re excited to see how it translates on the printed page.

Robots vs. Princesses #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The title says it all with this one.

The Seeds #1 (Dark Horse/Berger Books) – A four issue mini-series from Berger Books from Ann Nocenti and David Aja follows a journalist who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime which if it’s revealed will destroy the last hope of a dying world.

WWE Attitude Era 2018 Special #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Head back to what many consider one the best eras for wrestling.

Review: Mister Miracle #9

Only Scott Free could go to Apokolips…

After war comes peace. The bloody battles that waged across New Genesis and Apokolips have come to an end, and now Mister Miracle and Kalibak must sit down and discuss a truce. Can Scott Free trust the former minions of Darkseid to keep their word? Not likely, but a leader sometimes has to take a risk in service to the greater good. Perhaps the more pressing question, though, is whether Big Barda can make it through the negotiations without beating the life out of the assassin Kanto.

There’s so many instances of comics having weird timing with real world events despite their lead time in creation. We’ve seen comics timed with the mortgage crisis, Cambridge Analytica, and now a negotiation with a brutal dictator.

Written by Tom King, Mister Miracle #9 focuses on the negotiations towards peace for the forces of New Genesis and Apokolips. On one end is Scott Free and the other Kalibak negotiating.

This is the Michael Mann of comics with a focus on discussion and characters instead of a action. Every word used, every situation, every movement of a character goes deep into the situation. Every detail matters. And it’s one to read through a ponder.

It’s also odd to read as President Trump meets with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who, much like Darkseid, is a brutal leader who enslaves his people, warmongers, and has the deaths of unknown amounts on his hands. The criticism of legitimizing such a leader echoes here for the better.

Artist Mitch Gerads continues his amazing work and Gerads and King are a writer/artist combo that I hope continue for years to come. The movement of the characters, the look of an eye, the position of where they are, the framing of a scene, all enhance the storytelling and can tell the story without lettering. The use of reds throughout the comic emphasizes the blood that has been spilled up to this point.

Clayton Cowles‘ lettering is key too giving the delivery a live action performance brings to such a story. The emphasis of words, the layout of speech bubbles, every detail here too adds to the story.

While the end is a bit predictable the overall read is amazing and is a comic that blends entertainment, socio-political themes, a reflection on real world events, and drama, with a dash of philosophy. It’s an amazing issue for an already amazing series.

With his attention split by his concerns for his wife’s commitments back on Earth, can Mister Miracle hold his own against the minions of darkness?

Top Picks: Daredevil #601 (Marvel) – The Mayor Fisk arc has been wonderful, and with the twist from last issue I am waiting what this one will bring. This is turning into one of the best runs on Daredevil I have read in years, and Soule and Garney keep rolling!

Infinity Countdown #2 (Marvel) – The Adam Warlock issue and the first issue of this event that is leading to another event (but don’t call it an event!) was filled with great set up. I am more than excited that Logan is back, and the characters they chose to have the infinity stones is very interesting and should lead to some great fun.

The Avengers #689 (Marvel) – Every week this comic delivers classic Avengers action while jugging many team members and creators, and I can not recommend it enough.

Action Comics #1000 (DC) – A landmark moment for comics, superheroes, and the one to spawn generation after generation of heroes. This is the guy who made it cool to wear the underwear on the outside (wait that’s not cool?). One thousand issues is insane!

The Black Monday Murders Vol. 2 (Image Comics) –  I love this creepy detective occult series and this volume is just as wild as the first. Hickman is one of the best writers around today, so do not miss this!

Fight Club 2 TP (Dark Horse) – I am fangirling pretty hard for this soft cover version of my signed never taken off the shelf hard cover copy. Finally a copy that can come with me and an excuse to reread it.

Harley Quinn #42 (DC Comics) – I’ve been warming to the new team behind Harley and I am a sucker for seeing what the future holds my favorite villain.

John Wick #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – More of the John Wick origin story and it should keep me going until the 3rs installment comes out next year.

Kick-Ass #3 (Image Comics) – Patience Lee is taking names and kicking ass so obviously I am all the way here for it.

Runaways TP Vol. 10 (Marvel) – Teens being teens and trying to save the world the way teens would.

Calexit #1 (4th Printing) (Black Mask Studios) – Because it is the start of an amazing series!

Top Pick: Fence #5 (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM! has been killing it with sports series that bring the popular manga genre to the west and this series is one of the best out there. Great characters, interaction, and stories.

Lucy Dreaming #2 (BOOM! Studios) – A fun start that seems to blend the magical girl genre with sci-fi.

Mister Miracle #8 (DC Comics) – One of the most intriguing comics out today. The second half of this series has me excited to see where it all goes and what the creative team has in store. A brilliant maxi-series and will absolutely be on many best of lists.

James Bond: The Body #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – An intriguing series that has explored Bond in a new way and really breaking down the character in various aspects. A must for any Bond fan.

Transformers: Optimus Prime #17/Transformers: Optimus Prime #18/Transformers: Lost Light #17 (IDW Publishing) – Any week with Transformers comics I’m happy, but three in one week makes me beyond excited. So much more than meets the eye.

DC Comics is revisiting Jack Kirby‘s Masterpiece, the Fourth World in a new Mister Miracle miniseries wirtten by Tom King and art by Mitch Gerads. It’s being called the best comic of the year and a worthy tribute to one of The King of Comic’s most personal works. Graphic Policy Radio is going into a deep dive discussing the first seven issues with two guest critics, Meg Downey and Anthony Otero.

The show airs live tonight at 7pm ET.

Review: Mister Miracle #7

Mister Miracle and Big Barda are in a panic. The war with Apokolips isn’t going well. And it’s Barda’s turn to have her past come crashing back into her present as the Female Furies appear on the scene with blood on their minds.

After the shocking ending of the sixth issue, Mister Miracle is back. Writer Tom King slows things down in a weird way with an issue that focuses on the birth of Scott and Barda’s child. And it’s an amazing read filled with humor and heart. What’s it like for two gods to have a kid? Well, this issue answers that as the two are back on Earth to give birth while war rages at home. It’s clear the two have other things on their mind as they debate the issue on names and also get visitors in the form of Female Furies, their enemies.

The detail and focus of the issue is fantastic with King delivering jokes throughout but also having the weight of everything present. It’s ominous and in the background. We know it’s all there but it’s only referenced slightly here and there.

As someone who is expecting their first child in the summer, the issue hit me in the right ways. There’s a monotony about it (at least in our case) where you’re just letting nature do its thing while you wait and try to make the best decisions. And during that you attempt to amuse yourself in ways. Scott plays with his phone and throws out names which are all solid nods to the king, Jack Kirby, Mister Miracle’s creator.

The visit by the Female Furies as well is fantastic. The war rages but here’s two sides coming together over this joy. The details of it all is what makes it great and had me relating and laughing. But, there’s a juxtaposition and the waiting applies to each situations. The looming aspect is both the child coming and the next steps of the war raging.

The art by Mitch Gerads as usual is fantastic. The comic is the usual nine panels which allows each small motion by Barda, Scott, the Furies, to play out and tell the story as well. It’s a combination of writer and creator that are fantastic and an example of the power of the visual aspect of comics in the storytelling experience. The lettering by Clayton Cowles also adds to that emphasizing the emotion or lack thereof at various moments in the issue. That’s especially true with the Furies and their… interesting nature and demeanor.

I’ve loved this series so far even when it has left me scratching my head. This issue though feels like a one-shot you could hand to anyone who has had a kid or expecting and they can relate to it in some way. A fantastic issue overall that had me laughing and is full of quirky heart. For a series that has been so solid, this issue stands out as the best so far.

Betrothed #1 (AfterShock Comics) – Sean Lewis and Steve Uy’s new series and those creators alone have us excited. The concept is out there involving two individuals who each lead an army at war with each other but when they turn eighteen they either need to get married or fight to the death.

Come Into Me #1 (Black Mask Studio) – A new horror series about body image, social media, and memory. Sounds interesting to us!

Eternity Girl #1 (DC Comics/DC’s Young Animal) – The teasers in “Milk Wars” got us amped up and we were already excited about this new series from Magdalene Visaggio and Sonny Liew.

Ghost Money #8 (Lion Forge Comics) – You probably have been missing this series about all of the money terrorists made from 9/11. Really interesting stuff that reads like the best thrillers.

Ghostbusters: Crossing Over #1 (IDW Publishing) – When the containment unit empties, who you gonna call? Every Ghostbuster in every dimension. Sounds like fun!

Infidel #1 (Image Comics) – Fantastic psychological horror with a religious twist.

Mister Miracle #7 (DC Comics) – A fantastic issue that picks up after the shocking end of the last one. Great humor to it as Mister Miracle and Barda have their kid!

New Mutants: Dead Souls #1 (Marvel) – New Mutants… we’re in.

Puerto Rico Strong (Lion Forge Comics) – A charity anthology to raise money for the people of Puerto Rico. A mix of education and entertainment and a must get.

Star Wars: Thrawn #2 (Marvel) – The rise of Thrawn!!! Adapting the books, it’s a must for Star Wars fans.
