Review: Bounty #5

Romance. Crime. Vodka. Motorcycles. This one has it all! Surrounded by enemies, Nina and Georgie are running out of options. But these bounty-hunting sisters have never surrendered before, and they’re not about to start now. Their sworn enemy has a lot of trouble on his hands—karma always gets you in the end.

The story ends, as it begins in Bounty #5 written by Kurtis Wiebe. This issue reveals a lot of backstory and gives a detailed explanation on why this rag tag group changed their criminal ways. With how Wiebe leaves this issue I hope we’ll get more of this world, series, and Nina and Georgie.

While the colorful art style by Mindy Lee continues, in some way this issue breaks it up and changes things up a bit. At times Bounty #5 goes with a more terrestrial almost Blade Runner environment for the scenes that take place in the past. In contrast to this, the present is much more clean and military looking. Yet both share a clear sense of high octane action with solid work by Lee who keeps the series consistent and flowing with energy and excitement with the visuals.

It’s time to explore everyone’s tragic backstory! But as Nina, Viv, and even Oscar spill their guts, Georgie is thinking about the bottom line. Now that their secret identities have leaked, it’s starting to look like they’ll never get paid.

Even on a good day, nothing seems to go right for Nina and Viv. A simple drop off turns into a firefight. Which almost in a cliche manner leads to an interesting chase/space fight panels. Through it writer Kurtis Wiebe makes you feel sympathy for the ex-criminals turned bounty hunters.

The firefight scenes by artist Mindy Lee are done with a great attention to color and displaying action. Even the interesting flashback is a great contrast from the present. It all manages to showcase Lee’s talent very well.

Review: Bounty #2

Sisters Nina and Georgie are bounty hunters, wanted criminals, and flat broke. In their quest to finally get paid, they’ve taken on a dangerous job on a familiar planet. It’s a showdown between old enemies and new allies as the epic sci-fi adventure continues!

Humor, action, and an odd degree of retro-futurism are packed into Bounty #2. I love how somehow despite inter-planetary travel being possible, selfies are still a thing. It’s funny how despite chasing after a known criminal, they agree to take a selfie in the middle of the chase. It’s an entertaining detail that sets the series apart of the type of humor you’d expect from writer Kurtis Wiebe. Details like that adds to the series and helps us the readers tell these characters love their job and have fun as they go after criminals.

The art by Mindy Lee is solid and detailed. It manages to showcase some interesting details as the characters chase their bounty. Lee shows some great detail that clearly delineates a division between the city, the graffiti ridden slums and the cleaned, polished towers of those with at least some money. That sort of work helps flesh out the world.

The Gadflies were the most wanted criminals in the galaxy—robbing corporations to redistribute wealth to the destitute. Now, with a bounty to match their reputation, the Gadflies are forced to abandon banditry for a career as bounty hunters . . . ’cause if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em—then rob ’em blind!

Rat Queens creator Kurtis Wiebe joins forces with pop-comic sensation Mindy Lee to present a femme fatale sci-fi caper of epic proportions!

Wiebe has made something with Bounty that fans of Cowboy Bebop should pickup. While it keeps the action and humor of the acclaimed anime, it is much more colorful in nature. The story is lighthearted, fun, and quick paced. If you like high-energy, humorous sci-fi you shouldn’t miss this.

The cartoon influenced, colorful art is visually eye-catching.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see a cartoon adaption happen, given both the artwork and story. The action scenes are polished and have a great flow between the panels.  If this issue is just a hint at things to come, I’m not sure I can wait for more.
