Review: Metal Men #1

Metal Men #1

I know very little, next to nothing about Metal Men. So, going into Metal Men #1 I was interested in learning more about these classic characters.

Storytellers Dan DiDio and Shane Davis deliver a spin on the classic Pinocchio with an egotistical spin.

The issue revolves around Will Magnus as he reflects on the Metal Men, his time creating them, and the reaction to them. It’s an interesting start with a horror vibe about it when the rabbit hole is reached.

But, where Metal Men #1 falls short is the lack of characters that you want to cheer for. The Metal Men themselves aren’t given a lot of time to show off their personalities. Instead, the focus is really Magnus and how he developed and treated them. And Magnus does not come off well at all. It’s actually quite negative and it’s hard to like him.

What little we get of the Metal Men themselves is fine and they seem to be an interesting group, there’s just not enough of them.

There’s also a nice tie-in to the Dark Night event and the Dark Multiverse with the focus on Nth metal. Out of everything, that’s the most interesting aspect and having enjoyed this meta story, it’s great to see it pushed along instead of dropped.

The art by Shane Davis is solid with ink by Michelle Delecki, color by Jason Wright, and lettering by Travis Lanham. For as mixed as I am on the story itself, the art is beautiful to look at. That design also helps emphasize the horror aspects at times as well. There’s a solid juxtaposition. The Metal Men look fantastic and the comic has a solid amount of detail. The art is the highlight.

The first issue is an interesting one. There’s a lot that’s intriguing and I want to learn more but at the same time there’s little I care about as far as characters. The horror version of Pinocchio is what has me intrigued to continue. The first issue doesn’t quite have me getting what makes Metal Men so popular and beloved but it’s interesting enough for me to continue.

Nth Metal Joins Metal Men this Fall

The Metal Men are back! And back and back and back again, as DC takes a deep look into Doctor Will Magnus’ robotics lab as he experiments with what it means to be sentient in a modern world. Beginning this October, DC Publisher Dan DiDio and artists Shane Davis and Michelle Delecki transform DC’s Metal Men in a new twelve-issue maxi-series drawn from events first seen in bestselling hardcover Dark Knights: Metal.

With nods to early DC Showcase stories, where the Metal Men first appeared, and DC’s long history of science fiction storytelling, the Metal Men discover a warehouse of old robots, older versions of themselves, that are junked and apparently left in disrepair by their creator rather than being rebuilt after their heroic battles. Meanwhile, a mysterious liquid Nth metal has appeared in the science site at Challenger Mountain…the same Challenger Mountain that came through from the Dark Multiverse and landed in Gotham at the end of Dark Knights: Metal and was the focal point of the DC New Age of Heroes miniseries New Challengers.

Metal Men #1, written by Dan DiDio with art by Shane Davis and Michelle Delecki and edited by Jessica Chen, debuts in comic book stores and online retailers on Wednesday, October 16 with a cover by Davis and a variant cover by Philip Tan.

Review: Uncanny X-Men #19

Uncanny X-Men #19

Uncanny X-Men #19 is when the magician reveals how they did their trick. Focused entirely on Emma Frost, the issue weaves her story and machinations. We learn about her manipulation and game of chess and how that’s impacted the X-Men. Why did Logan and Scott team up? Why did Scott have a list? What was up with that Mr. Sinister fight? Captain America is doing what? Anole stole what? It’s all explained here and it’s impressive.

Writer Matthew Rosenberg takes us in to the Hellfire Club. It’s a new club with very interesting members. Each makes you ponder what it all means and how things have shifted. Emma Frost sits at the head of it all, manipulating her way through life. But why is she doing it? Rosenberg reveals that too. We get a clear motivation and some struggles as she attempts to outmaneuver the person pulling her strings.

This is very much the moment in the film where you learn how the robber pulled off the heist. As each piece of the puzzle is shown, it all makes a bit more sense.

Rosenberg does kill off yet another character. It’s something this run will become known for, for better or worse.

The art is pretty solid in the issue. That’s in spite of numerous artists and inkers. The transition from one to the other is fairly smooth and doesn’t hinder the issue at all.

Uncanny X-Men #19 brings it all together. Uncanny X-Men #19 explains so much as to what has been going on. The issue also explains why some things have felt off in this run, though still fun. If you’re not more excited by the time the issue wraps up, I don’t know what to say, but this one has me loving the X-Men again. If you’re an X-fan, this is a must buy.
