Review: Wolvenheart #1

Wolvenheart #1

Wolvenheart #1 feels like a lot of things thrown together. There’s a little Castlevania in there mixed with some Doctor Who, some Time Cop, and a dash of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The concept is simple, a group travels throughout time protecting it from monsters.

Written by Mark London, the comic is a decent debut. There’s some enjoyable about the world and characters though nothing jumps out as truly exciting. Though published by Mad Cave Studios, there’s a Zenescope quality about the story and characters.

We get a lot of foreshadowing and future dread as we learn about the characters and world. And here and there we get some action as well. There’s a bit of a police procedural about it as well as a body is found outside of a town that needs investigation. It’s all good but nothing really great.

The visuals by Alejandro Giraldo with lettering by Miguel Angel Zapata are good. There’s a double page spread that’s fantastic and really stands out as the highlight of the issue. The designs of the characters are solid with each having a distinct personality and enough detail to tell a bit of their story.

Wolvenheart #1 is a fun debut. It isn’t absolutely amazing but if you’re into this sort of concept, it’s well worth picking up and checking out. There’s something there with the setup and Castlevania meets Doctor Who mashup. With the basics out of the way, here’s hoping future issues deliver a little more excitement.

Time Travel Meets Horror in Mad Cave’s Victorian Thriller

Mad Cave Studios has announced the all-new series Wolvenheart. Written by Mark London and illustrated by Alejandro Giraldo. Letterer Miguel Zapata rounds out the creative team.

Follow Sterling Cross, the most prolific time traveling, monster slayer in Wolvenheart. Led by the legendary Professor Van Helsing, Wolvenheart is an organization dedicated to monitoring anomalies in the space-time continuum. After the group is infiltrated and decimated by a cabal of history’s most infamous villains, led by the most notorious serial killer of the 16th century, Elizabeth Bathory; Sterling winds up trapped in an alternate reality where his only choice is to fight his way through time and change the course of history. For fans of Dr. Who, Castlevania, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

All of the stories I’ve created and written for Mad Cave are dear to my heart, but Wolvenheart holds its own special place because of my love for the classic movie monsters and, of course, time travel. I also really enjoyed the research necessary for period pieces like this. Each page Alejandro turns in puts a huge smile on my face and I can’t wait to share this story with the world.

Mark London

Wolvenheart is the perfect vehicle for me to reflect on some major influences in my art; like Castlevania and Bloodborne. This book required me to do something different with my style, but the process was very rewarding.

Alejandro Giraldo

This seven-issue series releases on October 30th and is available for pre-order July 26th – August 29th.
