Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Future State: Gotham #1 (DC Comics) – We loved Future State, especially the Batman tie-ins. We return to that world with this series focused on Red Hood who has shunned his friends to go undercover to take down the Magistrate.

Heroes Reborn #2, Heroes Reborn: Hyperion and the Imperial Guard #1, Heroes Reborn: Peter Parker, the Amazing Shutterbug #1 (Marvel) – The debut issue was a bit mixed in quality but we’re intrigued to see where this story goes.

The Joker #3 (DC Comics) – This series has surprised us and surpassed our expectations. With its focus on Jim Gordon and his mission and failures, this is more like a detective story with its flawed main character than the typical Batman action-focused comic.

Magic #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue did a solid job of capturing the Magic: The Gathering world. With a focus on an assassination attempt, the comic keeps things familiar as far as the story. It’s a solid combination and smart direction for the series.

Maniac of New York #4 (AfterShock) – This series has been great with a nice twist on the slasher genre.

The Princess Who Saved Herself (BOOM! Studios) – We backed this when it was a Kickstarter and loved it then. A great all-ages graphic novel about a Princess who rocks and the classical guitarist down the road she annoys.

Proctor Valley Road #3 (BOOM! Studios) – The series has been a solid horror adventure full of mystery and questions. Add in the details of the time period added and you have a great story.

Project Patron #2 (AfterShock) – A twist on the superhero genre, a team of individuals work together to keep up the illusion that the world’s greatest hero is still alive.

The Recount #4 (Scout Comics) – We’re in love with this series which sees an uprising against those that supported a corrupt President. The level of detail is amazing and each issue delivers shocks. We have no idea what’s next and where this is going.

Scout’s Honor #5 (AfterShock) – The series wraps up and we couldn’t guess how. This has been a fantastic mix of apocalyptic world and exploration of societal ill.

Silver Coin #2 (Image Comics) – Anthologies are getting popular again and this one features a new creator with each issue but they’re all tied together by a cursed coin. The first one was fantastic, like a horror Twilight Zone.

Stake #3 (Scout Comics) – The series has been a nice update to the classic vampire slayer concept. The art is top-notch delivering a cool style that blends in social media. The second issue expanded the world and concept and we want to see where it goes from there.

Time Before Time #1 (Image Comics) – To escape the future, people turn to a criminal organization that will smuggle them back in time. Such a great idea.

X-Corp #1 (Marvel) – Monet St. Croix and Warren Worthington head up the business ventures of Krakoa.

Review: Magic #1

Magic #1

Welcome to Ravnica, the home of magic. Kaya the Ghost-Assassin. Ral Zarek the Stormheart. Vraska the Queen of the Downtrodden. While each resides somewhere different in Ravnica, each will face down many foes due to a sudden attack in Magic #1. Who sent them is unknown but it’s part of the mystery of the multiverse of Magic.

I’m coming into Magic #1 as someone who knows absolutely zero about Magic: The Gathering but with any fantasy system, it’s about finding the components and putting them into terms you are familiar with. As someone who has played Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, I wasn’t completely confused with the goings-on of this first issue. It’s definitely a good setup issue. It provides an introduction to Ravnica and the various Planeswalkers and a couple of steps into what each is capable of. I’m not ready to go get a deck but the character work laid out within the pages is definitely enough to keep me entertained.

I’m fairly impressed with Magic #1. Jed McKay put together a simple enough story, which is great for someone like me who doesn’t understand MTG and yet there’s enough of the terms and abilities and such thrown about that it quickly brings you into the fold. McKay has put in a good amount of worldbuilding, action, and intrigue to really help make Magic #1 a quality fantasy comic.

Add Ig Guara’s art to the mix, I really like the art style used here. One of the great things about fantasy is the mixture of the strange and exotic and there’s definitely a lot of strange and exotic with this issue and having an artist up to the task of drawing all of this up is key. I know some of this has to come from the game itself but there’s a lot of cool character designs here. It’s a comic book with a lot of bright and vibrant colors. Arianna Consonni’s colors really add to the fantasy feeling and with Ed Dukeshire’s letters, I feel this issue of Magic is an adventurous first issue.

Magic #1 is very much in the vein of IDW’s Dungeons & Dragons comics, which I also really enjoy. We can never have enough fantasy-driven work in comics so if that’s what you like, take a chance with Magic.

Review: Magic #1

Magic #1

The popular game Magic: The Gathering has found a new home in comics with BOOM! Studios. Magic #1 kicks off a new series and adventure in the worlds crafted over decades by Wizards of the Coast. The debut is an interesting one that can be enjoyed for the straightforward story or the deeper cuts into the world of Magic: The Gathering. It’s been years since I played but the comic is full of references that fans of the game will enjoy.

Written by Jed MacKay, Magic #1 introduces us quickly to the multiverse and concept of Planeswalkers and most importantly the setting of Ravnica. The setting is an interesting one. It’s not just a setting of a Magic: The Gathering set but it also might defy expectations of those new to the world. Ravnica is as much a character in the comic as the Planeswalkers. It’s a sprawling city with thousands of cultures, numerous guilds, and lots of possibilities.

Despite the at times complicated world of the game, MacKay keeps things simple. Magic #1 focuses on an assassination attempt on three heads of guilds and the fallout from that. It’s a simple concept that introduces the key players, creates conflicts, and gives a logical reason for these characters to come together. Fans of the game will recognize the high-profile choices. Where I fall short is recognizing the spells. There’s some I think I know but those who have played and know the world will likely appreciate some of what’s on the page more. It’s a comic that feels like it has a lot for long-time fans but it also presents things so that new readers can hop in and not feel overwhelmed or that they’re missing something.

The art by Ig Guara is interesting. Along with color by Arianna Consonni, the art is much more geared towards “comics”. Those expecting an art style that’s similar to Magic: The Gathering cards might be disappointed. The art though is really engaging. Ravnica looks fantastic and the introduction to the various guilds makes it all look fantastical and sucks the reader in. The art does a great job of balancing the various perspectives with page layouts that are dynamic. There’s some really interesting choices that make an exciting flow to the story. Ed Dukeshire‘s lettering is great too, really adding emotion to the characters. At times, there’s also a lot of dialogue as well but Dukeshire’s choices never feel overwhelming and the art still shines.

Magic #1 does a solid job of bringing the massive world of Magic: The Gathering to comics. Its story keeps things simple with an attack and assassination attempt, something that’s easy to understand and brings characters together in an organic and easy way. It’s a great mix of the game and comics that’s fun for long-time fans and those new to the world.
