Samoa Joe Makes His Debut in BOOM! Studios’ WWE Comics

BOOM! Studios and WWE have announced that January’s WWE #13 will feature the WWE comic book writing debut of WWE Superstar Samoa Joe in a story co-written by Michael Kingston and illustrated by Michel Mulipola. Samoa Joe and Kingston’s story will go behind the scenes of how the Superstar first joined Monday Night RAW. WWE #13 will also contain a story by writer Kevin Panetta and artist Daniel Bayliss about this year’s Festival of Friendship featuring Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens.

The announcement follows BOOM! Studios and WWE’s reveal that WWE Superstar AJ Styles will make his WWE comics writing debut in WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Special, also arriving in comic shops in January 2018.

The main cover for WWE #13 is illustrated by Dan Mora, with variant covers by Adam Riches, Brent Schoonover, and Adam X Vass.

Review: Zodiac Starforce: Cries of the Fire Prince #2

Winter break isn’t so relaxing for the team! A creature from the dark dimension Nephos has been summoned to their town by unknown enemies. The girls also discover they aren’t the only Zodiac Starforce team–are they friend . . . or foe?

In Zodiac Starforce: Cries of the Fire Prince #2 things get complicated as Nephos paints the town red which grants Alice and her friends their powers back in the processes. There’s some nice twists and turns as the Zodiac Starforce manage to encounter him, almost defeating him. Then Nephos reveals he is more powerful then the simple dancer he claimed to be. However, with the appearance of another Zodiac Starforce near the end, I’m curious to see how it impacts the story and where this all goes. Writer Kevin Panetta has me really interested in what is up his sleeve.

The art by Paulina Ganucheau continues to be well balanced. The issue shows off the “normal” aspects of the Zodiac Starforce members’ life as they deal with family and school and then balances all of that with introducing parts of Cimmeria’s kingdom. Despite the briefness of the glimpses, you can see the influence of Arabic and Medieval culture in it. It’s impressive to be able to seamlessly blend things so unlike each other and make it all work so well.

Review: Zodiac Starforce: Cries of the Fire Prince #1

An elite group of teenage girls with magical powers have sworn to protect our planet against dark creatures . . . as long as they can get out of class! Known as the Zodiac Starforce, these high-school girls aren’t just combating math tests–they’re also battling monsters!

 

After defeating a former Zodiac Starforce member and her mean-girl minions, the girls thought they’d get a little break! But a new big bad’s come out to play, and demons are starting to overrun the downtown!

Zodiac Starforce: Cries of the Fire Prince #1 continues shortly after the first volume ends. Intelligently, the first issue makes sure to include a brief retelling of the past volume to refresh fans and introduce fans who are unaware of the first volume. That’s super helpful when there’s breaks between series and helps make a new volume new reader friendly. Writer Kevin Panetta does an amazing job keeping a quick pace for the story while managing to balance character development and action. We also get a bit of a reveal of who the next villain may be.

Artist Paulina Ganucheau continues the “Sailor Moon” inspired art style. She manages to give the Zodiac supernatural element some great detail. It also showcases a very colorful visual style in the process in addition to showcasing some series action as the story unfolds.

A solid start to a series that’s entertaining and action packed and manages originality despite familiarity.

WWE Superstar AJ Styles Makes His WWE Comics Writing Debut in WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Special

BOOM! Studios and WWE have announced the WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Special, arriving in stores January 2018 and featuring some of the biggest WWE Superstars in history! In this oversized special, WWE Superstar AJ Styles makes his WWE comics writing debut in the “phenomenal” story of his first WWE appearance. He is joined by co-writer Michael Kingston in this special celebration of the titular pop-culture phenomenon, which also includes new stories from acclaimed talent such as Ryan Ferrier, Kevin Panetta, Kendall Goode, and Daniel Bayliss.

WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Special features other untold stories behind some of the greatest Royal Rumble matches in history. From Ric Flair winning his first rumble to Shawn Michaels going the distance after teetering on the edge, this special showcases the greatest Superstars in sports entertainment history!

The main cover is illustrated by Xermánico, with a special cover by Juan Doe featuring “The Beast” Brock Lesnar and his advocate Paul Heyman.

WWE Royal Rumble 2018 will be held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, January 28. Along with WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series, Royal Rumble is one of WWE’s original “Big Four” pay-per-view events.

Review: Zodiac Starforce: By the Power of Astra TPB

But when an evil force infects leader Emma, she must work with her team to save herself—and the world—from the evil Diana and her mean-girl minions! Collects Zodiac Starforce #1–#4.

Zodiac Starforce is a brand-new creator-owned series from Kevin Panetta and Paulina Ganucheau for fans of Sailor Moon, Buffy, and Lumberjanes!

Honestly, when this series first came out I was intrigued but, ignored it until the trade paperback was released. Which for sake of the read was smart, despite all the humor, action, and drama that is contained within the series. While I think a good chunk of what Dark Horse publishes is darker, this series is much more light-hearted and for a broader age of ranges. This is easily a must have for fans of Sailor Moon, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’m curious to see if Dark Horse will continue this series, or not, but hoping we’ll see more of it.

I love the interchange of colors between the characters normal lives, and their Zodiac lives. While each page is spectrum of colors, I will admit scenes where the Zodiac Starforce is in Astra’s world are a sight to see. Even the Shadow dimension is filled with a great amount of contrast. It’s a great compliment and reflects the series well.
