Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Shay

Suicide Squad #31 (DC Comics) – Harley makes the tough call between saving her team mate and putting down the bad guy. We also find out who got the squad together and in this big fire fueled, phantom zone adjacent mess.

Runaways #5 (Marvel) – The return of Princess Powerful is the best damn way to get me to do anything!

Top Pick: Giants #1 (Dark Horse) – A new series that feels rather familiar. Humanity now lives underground due to giant monsters that live above and society is a bunch of gangs vying for control and supplies. It’s an entertaining first issue, enough so I want to read the second right away. While it’s not totally original (so far), it’s really well done.

Action Comics #993 (DC Comics) – Booster Gold people!!!!

Coyotes #2 (Image Comics) – I thinly veiled metaphor about human trafficking? Yes please!

Judas #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The award for comic to most likely cause a protest goes to…

Star Wars #40 (Marvel) – If you’re not reading Marvel’s Star Wars comics, you’re missing out.

Emmy and WGA Award-nominated writer Jeff Loveness (Marvel’s Nova) presents an exploration of the classical biblical character, perfect for fans of Preacher and The Goddamned.

Judas Iscariot journeys through life and death, grappling with his place in “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” and how much of his part was preordained. In a religion built on redemption and forgiveness, one man had to sacrifice himself for everyone…and it wasn’t Jesus.

Jeff Loveness and artist Jakub Rebelka Take on Judas

BOOM! Studios ihas announced Judas, a new comic book series launching in December from Emmy and WGA Award-nominated writer Jeff Loveness and artist Jakub Rebelka that follows the path of the most famous traitor in history. In a story perfect for fans of Preacher and The Goddamned, Judas picks up after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ,  as Judas Iscariot wakes up in Hell and grapples with his role in “The Greatest Story Ever Told”—and how much of his part was preordained.

The release, Loveness said:

Growing up, I always felt sorry for Judas. He’s always portrayed as a villain and the epitome of betrayal, but the entire Christian narrative of redemption and forgiveness hinges on him. He was born and destined to play this part in the story. There was never a chance for him to be anything else.

I’m really looking forward to diving into an unexplored corner of Christianity as Judas journeys through Hell, trying to make sense of himself and his place in the story. Judas in Hell is such a striking image to me. Hell is full of broken people, used by God in His grand story, then cast aside forever. Everyone feels alone and wasted… and it’s up to Judas to navigate through them all as he claws towards something resembling closure.

Judas #1 features a cover illustrated by Jakub Rebelka.
