Jeremy Holt and Felipe Cunha reimagine the Great Gatsby for a new generation of readers

AWA Studios has announced Gatsby, a reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby through an LGBTQIA-led, racially diverse lens, debuting on November 2. From creator and writer Jeremy Holt and artist Felipe Cunha, the new 8-issue original series reinvents the widely read Great American Novel for a new generation of readers.

Set in the present day, Gatsby is a wholly reimagined version of The Great Gatsby. While the main characters and plot points are familiar to the original novel, Holt’s rendition will be viewed in a new light, recontextualized for the technology, societal norms, and economic striving of the 2020’s as opposed to the 1920’s through teenaged character leads. Though set nearly 100 years in the future, the themes of betrayal, power, greed, and the American Dream ring as true now in GATSBY as they did in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age tale.

Gatsby is set in present-day Long Island. This story turns forward the clock to feature teenage versions of all of the key characters and views the classic dichotomies of the novel through a distinctly 21st century lens that includes the Internet, social media addiction, dark web bootlegging, and the proliferation of online identity creation, deletion, and theft. When middle-class Singaporean student Lu Zhao is invited to spend a summer on Long Island with his rich cousin Tommy, before attending Columbia University in the fall, his assimilation into the opulent American lifestyle straps him into a collision course fueled by designer drugs, sex, deceit, and murder.

Gatsby is created and written by Jeremy Holt, illustrated by Felipe Cunha, colored by Dearbhla Kelly, and lettered by Adam Wollet. Issue #1 will be available November 2, both digitally and in stores wherever comic books are sold, with the following seven issues available on a monthly basis.

Review: Marvel’s Voices: Identity #1

Marvel Voices: Identity

The impact of Shang Chi and the Ten Rings cannot be understated. The fact that Marvel took a big swing by giving a movie to a character with no prior introduction, was risky. AS the fan base, other than the actual comic book readers, know who he was. The movie met the moment in this time and place.

As with what happened when Black Panther was released, suddenly fans that never saw themselves were finally …seen. The movie much like the iconic Chadwick Boseman starrer,  also had a nuanced flawed and complicated villain , in Tony Leung’s Mandarin As the world waits for the Ms. Marvel TV show, the visibility of  AAPIs have never been as apparent . In what seems to be Marvel’s annual one shots showing diversity, we get Marvel’s Voices: Identity, showcasing some of the Marvel Universe’s mightiest Asian heroes.

In “ Secrets”, we find Jimmy Woo and Shang Chi, as prey in a  a challenge much akin to Saw coordinated by Crossfire, which finds them saying hard truths to each other, only to become closer for it.  In “ Fool Me Twice”,  Ms. Marvel meets a former love interest /fellow Inhuman/foe, who attempts to use her feelings about him against her but thankfully Shang Chi , shows up , to open her eyes. In “The Primeval Paradox”, Groot and Mantis take a trip to her home planet,   but instead elicits memories of her family who been long gone. In the last story, “While You Were Out”, Wong fights off a creature trying to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum.

Overall, Marvel Voices: Identity is an excellent collection of stories which offers the right bit of nuance, and just how super we all are. The stories by the different creators are immersive. The art by the different creators are beautiful. Altogether, an excellent  one shot that, I hope will continue for many years.

Enter the House of Slay from Einhorn’s Epic Productions, Jeremy Holt, Soo Lee, Kimi Lee, and Kevin Wada

Injustice, greed, and prejudice are running rampant, the vulnerable are in danger, and we need help from someone with the power to make an impact; a hero, or even better, a whole team of heroes. This is the foundation of the entire superhero genre, so it’s great to see a new take that goes all the way back to those roots in social justice. And that’s what you’re about to read in House of Slay, the brand new superhero comic from Einhorn’s Epic Productions (EEP), now available to read on Tapas!

The origins of House of Slay date back to the tumultuous events of last year, with the ongoing struggle for racial justice gaining momentum and anti-Asian hate crimes on the rise. Fashion designers Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim,Laura Kim of Oscar De La Renta, and their friends Tina Leung and Ezra J William had banded together for support and solidarity as members of the AAPI community in fashion, making their voices heard on social media and at Black Lives Matter demonstrations. But with AAPI voices so often sidelined in the Eurocentric fashion world, they wanted a stronger, more visible presence.

Turned into superheroes by the EEP creative team of writer Jeremy Holt, cover artist Kevin Wada, artist Soo Lee, colorist Kimi Lee, letterer AndWorld Design, and editor Alex Lu, House of Slay follows these real life friends on a fantastic adventure as they use their newfound abilities to face off against a villain powered by the hatred of everyday people. It’s a story told with real heart, steeped in comics history with an “othered” group of people protecting the innocent and trying to make the world a better place. And of course, our heroes are dressed to slay!

Review: Marvel’s Voices: Identity #1

Marvel Voices Identity #1

As a child growing up, I yearned to see myself in the entertainment I enjoyed. I remembered watching TV and movies and rarely saw an Asian face. When we did show up, we were mostly background players. Thankfully, I had Kung Fu Theater, but most of those movies came off cartoonish and were made in the 1960s and 1970s.

Fast forward to today and we are getting our first Asian superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while along the way, strides have been made across all media. We have had three Asian centered television shows to grace. We also have a boom of Asian creativity across the Diasporas that have never been seen before. On the precipice of the Shang Chi movie being released, Marvel has released the one-shot, Marvel’s Voices Identity #1, where the House Of Ideas showcase some of their greatest heroes which just so happens to be Asian.

In “What Is Vs What If”, Shang Chi is challenged by the alternate version of himself if chose not defy his father. In “That One Thing”, Jubilee visits her parents’ graves and revisits her childhood through memories. In “Jimmy Woo 1959”, Jimmy uses his genius to help an alien that almost gets killed by an Army battalion. In “Seeing Red”, Kamala Khan while visiting family helps the local hero in Karachi. In “Personal Heroes”, Wave fights a water monster in her hometown with a hero she idolizes, Bishop. In “Singular/Plural”, Silhouette agonizes over the dating scene, blaming her disability for meeting eligible men, but one encounter, leads her to realize she needs to step out of her own shadow. In “Traditional Pink Sushi”, Armor and Silver Samurai, argue over how to make sushi and eventually realizes traditions are something to be renewed. In the last story,” New York State of Mind”, Silk and Amadeus Cho gets their day off interrupted, as they get into a fight the scarecrow on top of the Statue of Liberty.

Overall, Marvel’s Voices Identity #1 is an entertaining set of stories which not only highlight these heroes but also the excellent creators. The stories by the different creators are wondrous. The art by the different artists are beautiful. Altogether, Marvel’s Voices Identity #1 is a comics which introduces readers to these heroes and these talented creators.
