GWENOM PART 6
• Gwen’s on a one-way road into darkness. If anyone can help her find her way back into the light…
• It’s. GWEN. STACY.
• But is the universe trying to save her, or does fate only hold one end for Gwen?
Gwen Stacy’s adventures on the alternate universe of Earth-65 have included battling against Matt Murdock as Kingpin, being bitten by the Venom symbiote, and teaming up with fellow webslinger warriors Silk and Spider-Woman. Now, in Spider-Gwen #34, Gwen’s going to have to face her biggest battle yet – and she’ll have to do it without a mask or a secret identity!
Writer Jason Latour calls it an “incredible journey.”
All the epic adventure, all the crazy crossovers – it’s all been leading to this. Spider-Gwen #34 is out July 18th from writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez.
It looks like we’ve got a crossover between two Image Comic series. The below scene appears in Redneck #9. That series by Donny Cates, Lisandro Estherren, and Dee Cunniffe involves small town Vampires. Apparently they live pretty close to the fictional Craw County that’s the location of Jason Aaron and Jason Latour‘s Southern Bastards. That series is about racism, corruption, and football in a small Southern town.
Is this where Coach Boss has been dumping his bodies? They get killed in Southern Bastards and disposed of in Redneck?
Will we get more of a crossover? How about a mash-up series! Southern Rednecks? Redneck Bastards? No matter how official it is, it’s a great nod and wink for comic fans.
A moment of truth for Roberta Tubb. A moment of reckoning for Coach Boss.
Its been too long since the last issue of Southern Bastards but reading Southern Bastards #19 is like revisiting a friend, a gut-wrenching friend. For a few issues now, the series has been building up to the eventual meeting of Roberta and Coach Boss. This issue delivers and it’s as tense as we’d expect.
Much of the issue is focused on football, as one would expect, with things looking like they’re falling apart around Coach Boss. It’s an interesting read of what feels like a meltdown of the world around a character. Writer Jason Aaron and artist Jason Latour create chaos and tension that’s rarely felt in comics.
And like a good story, when you think things are written in stone the creators surprise you.
What feels like a story about Boss losing control is flipped on its head half way through. Or is it? That is open for debate due to the eventual meeting of Roberta and Boss. Again, keeping the reader on their toes.
Latour’s art is fantastic filled with emotion and brutality. Jared K. Fletcher‘s lettering also is something to notice. The series relies heavily on the lettering to convey the emotional situation. The art along with how words are emphasized helps make each moment.
Just when you think the series is going to go in one direction, Aaron and Latour shifts things and the end of this issue is one of those. Where things are going and how it’ll play out? We’ll have to wait and see and I’m counting down the days. Consistently one of the best comic series on the market.

• The aftermath of the PREDATORS storyline leaves Gwen in a VERY different place.
• Matt Murdock’s plans all come home to roost, and when you plan like our good friend Murderdock does, you know that ain’t pretty.
• WHAT IS THE NEXT EVOLUTIONARY STEP FOR SPIDER-GWEN?!
