The Inkwell Awards Announces Artists For the Ivan Reis Spotlight Challenge

The non-profit Inkwell Awards, devoted to promoting the art of comic book inking, has released the list of 24 artists participating in its fifth annual Sinnott Inking Challenge Spotlight. This year’s Challenge features artist Ivan Reis‘ take on DC’s iconic super-team The Justice League from the cover art to DC‘s Man of Steel (2018) as originally inked by Ivan‘s partner Joe Prado. The artwork will be auctioned afterward for fundraising.

The artists (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Gerry Acerno
  • Greg Adams
  • Brian Atkins
  • Keith Champagne
  • Kevin Conrad
  • John Dell
  • Michelle Delecki
  • Anthony Fowler Jr.
  • Scott Hanna
  • Christopher Ivy
  • Jay Leisten
  • Criss Madd
  • Jose Marzen Jr.
  • Mark McKenna
  • Jason Moore
  • Andrew Pepoy
  • Jack Purcell
  • Rodney Ramos
  • Ryusei Sawada (Kubert School 2020 Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship recipient)
  • Mike Sellers
  • Mark Stegbauer
  • LeBeau Underwood
  • Keith Williams
  • Walden Won

According to founder/director Bob Almond, the Spotlight Challenge, which grew out of its more inclusive, original Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge, showcases other contemporary, fan-favorite talents on a more limited scale with veteran published inkers who may or may not have participated in other challenges. The previous four pencilers were Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Erik Larsen, and David Finch.

The Challenge Spotlight furthers the inking advocacy’s dual mission of promoting the artform and educating the public. Blue-lined art files featuring a tightly penciled Ivan Reis Justice League pinup are sent to the artists to finish in ink. Each inked page will be signed by Reis and the inker, and include a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by Almond. All pages will then be auctioned off at a later date as a fundraiser. Fans will be able to see the difference in the penciled and inked versions to better understand how much inkers contribute to the artform.

Detective Comics #1027 Features a “Fractured” Future for Batman and the DC Universe and What is the “Black Casebook?”

When DC announced that Detective Comics #1027 would feature some of comics’ greatest storytellers, there was also mention that this must-have comic book would contain …”a few early hints at what’s in store for the future of the Caped Crusader!”

DC also said that fans would have to wait until September 15 to find out, but that’s not fair, so here’s a first look at two stories revealing more about what’s to come, not just the Dark Knight, but all of the DC Universe!

Written by Dan Jurgens with layouts and finished art by Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan, “Generations: Fractured” pits Batman against a would-be gang of museum vandals, led by Calendar Man. As the Dark Knight tries to stop him from torching priceless artifacts, a mysterious flash of light appears to break reality, and Batman finds that everything is different in Gotham, as he’s transported back to 1939!

Eisner award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Dan Mora team up to tell a tie-in story to “The Joker War.” In “A Gift,” The Joker’s attack on Batman and Gotham City leaves a GCPD officer dead. His partner identifies the perpetrator as the Caped Crusader, swearing that he’ll bring him to justice. This tragedy forces Batman to reluctantly open the pages of a mysterious “black casebook,” the contents of which are yet to be known.

Hardcore Batman fans can look forward to some of their favorite writers and artists taking part in this landmark issue, including Greg Rucka/Eduardo Risso, Grant Morrison/Chris Burnham, James Tynion IV/Riley Rossmo, Tom King/Walter Simonson, and Scott Snyder/Ivan Reis. They’re also joined by Kelly Sue DeConnick with John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson, Marv Wolfman/Emanuela Lupacchino/Bill Sienkiewicz, Brian Michael Bendis/David Marquez and more top creators!

Detective Comics #1027 arrives at open and operating comic book stores and participating digital retailers on Tuesday, September 15 with a retail price of $9.99.

DC Swaps Out 100-Page Giants for 4-Packs at Walmart

In an evolution of DC’s strategy to bring the World’s Greatest Super Heroes to the masses, the publisher announced today that the Walmart 100-Page GIANT anthology titles will be replaced by shrink-wrapped collections of recent DC comic books from the DC universe. The first wave of titles has already begun shipping to stores and should arrive in the more than 2,900 U.S. Walmart locations by Sunday, June 21.

Each pack of four is priced at $8.98, and includes a collectible backing board featuring a different DC Super Hero. When joined together, they form an image of the Justice League by Ivan Reis.

DC is also working to make these 4-packs available to comic book stores by September 2020.’

Walmart had already been selling packs of older comics at their stores along with the GIANT titles. The move is interesting as material from the GIANT comics have also been used recently as digital releases.
