Sam Glanzman’s Voyage To The Deep Is The Next Collection From It’s Alive!

voyage-to-the-deepWith two successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns under its belt, and a third one on the horizon, It’s Alive!, an exciting new imprint of IDW Publishing, is just days away from another fully funded project in Voyage to the Deep by Sam Glanzman. This third collection from It’s Alive! is a series of comics books that have been out of print for almost 55 years and will now be collected for the first time ever!

Voyage to the Deep follows the adventures of Admiral Jonathan Leigh, as he commands the mighty Proteus (a shape-shifting atomic sub) through the deepest of Earth’s oceans, battling fanged sea creatures, arctic monsters, anti-mater generators, sonic attacks, and even terrorism!

Golden Age comic book master, and WWII veteran, Sam Glanzman has been drawing comics for over 70 years. Through It’s Alive! publisher Drew Ford’s recent efforts, many new collections of Glanzman’s out-of-print work are now back on the shelves for long-time fans to enjoy, and new readers to discover for decades to come.  Mark Waid called Glanzman “…a National treasure in the field of illustration.”, and The A.V. Club praised Glanzman as “…one of the great storytellers of 20th century comics.”

The Voyage to the Deep Kickstarter page has now reached its goal and will be another successful campaign for the young imprint, however it’s not too late to pledge your support and become a backer yourself. As a backer, you will not only be helping Sam Glanzman, but you will also be helping Ford to continue his mission of saving the history of comics, one book at a time!

The Kickstarter is currently within striking distance of its third stretch goal – every paperback copy of Voyage to the Deep turns into an over-sized hardcover when the total reaches $13,000. Head to the Voyage to the Deep Kickstarter page now to become apart of comic book history before the campaign ends on Saturday, December 3, 2016!

IDW’s Newest ‘It’s Alive!’ Imprint Pushes Forward with Reprints and More

Following two successful Kickstarter campaigns, and the release of several limited edition art prints, signed by Sam Glanzman, It’s Alive! has hit the ground running with plenty more on the horizon.

Red Range by Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman, the debut title to be published under the It’s Alive! imprint, raised almost $20K ($5K more than the Kickstarter goal paving the way for the stretch goal of a hardcover), and is currently in production with the addition of new colors. Estudio Haus’ colors are breathing new life into Glanzman’s Red Range pencils and inks, originally completed nearly two decades ago.

dopeDope by Trina Robbins, which raised over $12K ($2K over the Kickstarter goal, again making the stretch goal of a hardcover possible), concluded its Kickstarter less than a month ago, and will be seeing the light of day in early 2017!

It’s Alive! has also begun to release very limited edition 12 x 17 art prints, signed by Sam Glanzman and embossed with his initials. Having nearly sold out, there will be more prints coming soon from Glanzman and other creators to meet the demand.

It’s Alive at IDW Publishing

it's aliveIt’s Alive! Like a bolt of lighting, It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that a new publishing deal has struck and IDW Publishing is excited to present the most electrifying new imprint of the year, It’s Alive!

IDW’s newest publishing partner, Drew Ford, brings with him first-rate taste and years of experience putting together dozens of graphic novel and comic book reprint collections for Dover Publications. He left his post there to launch his own imprint It’s Alive! with plans to continue his mission of saving the history of comics, one collection at a time. That goal has led Ford to acquire reprint rights to several exciting graphic novels.

Red RangeThat goal has led Ford to acquire reprint rights to several exciting graphic novel and comic book projects, and has now signed with IDW to solicit and distribute the titles produced by his new imprint, making those collections much more accessible to a larger audience. Ford has utilized Kickstarter in order to fully fund the restoration that each of these new collections deserves, with the campaign for Red Range by Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman being a recent success having raised nearly $20,000. This will be the first title published under the new imprint followed by Trina Robbins’ Dope.

It’s Alive! joins other notable imprint partners that have come to define IDW’s diverse award-winning content including Top Shelf Publications, Yoe! Books, and the Library of American Comics. It’s Alive! Plans to publish 5-6 titles in 2017 with each title raising its money for publication via Kickstarter.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Red Range by Joe R. Lansdale & Sam Glanzman

Red RangeSam Glanzman and Joe R. Lansdale need your help to publish their graphic novel, Red Range.

After putting together over two dozen reprint collections at Dover Publications over the last two years (one of which was nominated for an Eisner Award, The Puma Blues by Stephen Murphy & Michael Zulli), Drew Ford has launched his own publishing imprint called It’s Alive!

The first book for the new publishing imprint is Red Range and a Kickstarter campaign has been started to bring it to print.

It was originally published in black and white by Mojo Press in 1999. Sadly, Mojo Press went out of business the same year Red Range was published, and it has been out of print ever since.

This new edition will be published in full color, on 70 lb glossy stock, with a newly designed matte cover, and a historical afterword about Red Range and the working relationship between Lansdale and Glanzman, by acclaimed Swamp Thing artist Stephen R. Bissette.

Combining an unusual mix of racial unrest, odd ball characters and strange happenings, Red Range is a unique take on “The Western”, and absolutely deserves to be back in print.

The campaign runs until June 25.

Former Dover Publications’ Drew Ford Launches His Own Imprint, It’s Alive!

13043308_1061748050548230_3679940991495580841_nOne of the people I’ve gotten to interact over the years on the PR end of things in the comic industry is Drew Ford who up until recently was handling promotion for Dover Publications. A few months back Ford began informing me that he’d have new contact info, which indicated he was moving on from the position, though there was no formal announcement.

Now Ford’s next step is clear as he’s announced It’s Alive, a new imprint focused on “getting long out of print comics and graphic novels back in print.” The imprint will also publish new English translations of foreign material as well as “unique original projects.”

To kick things off, the publisher will be releasing a series of limited edition signed and numbered prints, and other unique collectibles.

First up, they have released the first ever limited edition print from comic book legend Sam Glanzman.  The image on the print is the cover to KONA #17, which was illustrated by Glanzman back in 1966.  Each print will be embossed with the artist’s initials, and will be signed and numbered by Glanzman himself. The edition is limited to 50, and they are being sold ONE PER CUSTOMER. You can get yourself one now.

Expect more announcements and plans soon and Ford has promised a “big announcement about a new hard cover edition of a graphic novel illustrated by Sam Glanzman, which has been out of print for over 17 years!”
