Pick of the Week – Idolized #2

Idolized is one of those series that will fall under the radar for far too many people. The series takes the American Idol formula and spins it to the super hero set with the winner getting a spot on “the” super hero team. The series follows a young girl with a secret that drives her motive in getting onto the show and winning it. The art is solid and story fantastic so far. What it really has going for it is an engaging story that has me entertained and hooked. When I went into issue #0, I thought it’d be like that other series with a similar premise, but instead, it cuts to the formula that works so well on reality television shows, driving the narrative of the show by focusing on an interesting character. It works on tv and it works for the comic so well, really breaking down what’s driven reality tv for so many years. Where the series goes and how well it can keep it up remains to be seen, but as far as books to read this week, Idolized #2 by Aspen Comics is the top of my list.

  • Idolized #2see above
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #16 – Marvel is hyping this issue which comes out one week after issue #15. Captain America/Steve Rogers is now President in a fractured United States. It should be interesting to see where this goes, but there’s so much potential.
  • Rachel Rising #11 – Terry Moore’s horror series has been amazing and should be on everyone’s list to read.
  • Higher Earth #5 – The plot and twists are predictable, but boy is it fun. The series revolves around a revolution in a world of infinite Earths. The fun is seeing what the creators come up with next.
  • Steed & Mrs. Peel #1 – Mark Waid is on a role, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with these classic characters.

Pick of the Week – The Massive #3

Brian Wood‘s The Massive is a mix of environmental disaster, political message and mystery is brilliant in every sense. The series follows the crew of a boat post ecological disaster that has devastated the world. While they try to figure out the “why” as far as the change in the environment, they’re also looking for their lost sister ship while trying to survive. This series has a message while not shoving it down our throats and it’s packaged in a thriller with an intense vibe that makes you not only want to turn the next page, but fear doing so. It’s almost a psychological thriller in a way with it’s use of pacing and how it keeps the tension throughout. If this were a movie, my jaw would be clenched and I’d be grinding my teeth. This is an absolute must read and why I’m making The Massive #3 my pick for the week.

  • The Massive #3 – see above
  • Right State – A thriller surrounding an assassination attempt on a President, yes please!
  • The Strain #7 – The brilliant and exciting Dark Horse vampire series.
  • Idolized #1 – Super heroes meet American Idol in this fantastic start to Aspen’s new series.
  • Mouse Guard: The Black Axe #5 – I love this Archaia fantasy series staring mice with swords…

Pick of the Week – Atomic Robo: Flying She-Devils of the South Pacific #1

I love Atomic Robo, that’s why my pick for the week is Atomic Robo: Flying She-Devils of the South Pacific #1.  The Atomic Robo comic book’s that I’ve read have been pure fun that’s appropriate for kids and adults alike.  Its that great humor that appeals to kids and also some jokes that are there for their parents too.

The art is great and writing top notch.  It’s rare that I can say parents and kids will enjoy a comic, and that comic is written in such a way to not insult either’s intelligence.  If you’ve never read an Atomic Robo comic, do yourself a favor and pick up the first issue of the seventh volume of the series that hits shelves this week.  And, while you’re there get more to satiate your Atomic Robo fix with Atomic Robo: Real Science Adventures #3.

  • Atomic Robo: Flying She-Devils of the South Pacific #1 – see above
  • Transformers: More Than Meets the Eyes #6I’ve been loving IDW’s two Transformers series that bring fun I haven’t experienced since the original cartoon.
  • New Deadwardians #4I have no idea how to describe this series that mixes a murder mystery with PBS Masterpiece Theater.
  • Idolized #0Aspen has been hyping this series and it’s enough to get me intrigued. Super heroes meet American Idol.  Sounds interesting enough for me.
  • Ultimate Comics Ultimates #12This series throws it all out there.  I never know what to expect.
