Banjax #1: A wholly Original and Crackingly Twisted Deconstruction of the Superhero Genre

Coming to you this June from Action Lab: Danger Zone is Banjax, a dark and decidedly wicked superhero noir that pulls no punches, that suffers no fools, that repeatedly gets knocked down, but always gets back up again with a smile. It’s an utterly treacherous comic dance that has already been banned in three States AND Puerto Rico.

Disgraced former superhero, Laird Mason, is diagnosed with terminal cancer brought on by years of using his powers. Defending what he has deemed an ungrateful and ultimately unworthy city is literally killing him. With just months to live and a legacy hanging in the balance, Mason launches a violent and misguided Death Wish-like campaign to purge the city of scumbags before he dies.

When things get really ugly, Mason’s measured and deliberate former sidekick, Abel Raines – the public’s current point-and-wink superhero ideal – is tasked with bringing his old mentor in. The issue? Raines isn’t remotely up to the task.

Creator Rylend Grant describes Banjax as a dripping-with-character Paul Thomas Anderson-like addiction play, folded into a Tony Gilroy-penned action thriller, directed by Michael Mann… Now, tell us that doesn’t sound intriguing.

Written by Grant, Banjax features art by Fábio Alves, color by Edson Ferreira, lettering by HdE, and a cover by Alves and Ferreira

Aberrant Season 2 Kicks Off in February

Rylend Grant has been busy. Not only has he been cranking out new movie screenplays, but he’s also put together a five-issue sequel to Aberrant. The comic is being developed for television by executive producer Tom Krantz.

Written by Grant the first issue of season two features art by Davi Leon Dias, color by Iwan Joko Triyono, and lettering by HdE. The covers are provided by Dias and Triyono.

Season 1 followed David Colbrenner, a U.S. Army Special Operations Commander whom, after losing his entire unit in a superhuman attack, waged a brutal one-man war on the eccentric billionaire and former superhero – Lance Cordrey – he believed to be responsible.

Season 2 starts with the realization that Cordrey was a patsy, and David’s men were actually killed as part of a vast government/military conspiracy. The nasty second season twist? If David is going to peel back the layers of said conspiracy, he’s going need Cordrey’s help.

Well-known for quirky variants – Season 1 covers included a hilarious parody of a classic Billy Dee Williams Colt 45 advertisement and not one, but two ALF-inspired fits – Grant promised not to disappoint with his season 2 covers. Season 2 brings a Top Gun/Playing with the Boys volleyball variant, a Karate Kid Part II:Live or Die? variant, and a Point Break meatball sandwich variant.

A U.S. Army Special Operations Commander, distraught after losing his entire unit to a superhuman attack, wages an absolutely brutal one-man war on the eccentric billionaire and former superhero that he believes is ultimately responsible.

Aberrant is a Modern Political/Conspiracy Thriller

Coming to you this June from Action Lab: Danger Zone, Aberrant is a truly filmic tale, the obvious brainchild of a creator who has for years been penning smart, testosterone-driven action movies for some of Hollywood’s biggest directors; folks like Ridley Scott, Justin Lin, F. Gary Gray, John Woo, and Luc Besson.

Written by Rylend Grant, Aberrant was perhaps the last major comic series created inside Los Angeles pop culture bastion Meltdown Comics. The geekdom landmark sadly just announced it would be closing its doors after 25 trendsetting years. The series features art by Zsombor Huszka, color by Iwan Joko Triyono, and lettering by HdE. The cover is by Huszka and Triyono.

David, a U.S. Army Special Operations Commander, distraught after losing his entire unit to a superhuman attack, wages an absolutely brutal one-man war on the eccentric billionaire and former superhero, Lance Cordrey, whom he believes is ultimately responsible. That is until Nelson Little, the head of a clandestine paramilitary outfit called Article 13, provides David with evidence that Cordrey may be a patsy, and David’s men were killed as part of a vast and twisted government/military conspiracy.

Grant describes Aberrant as a modern political/conspiracy thriller that explores how the United States’ military and geopolitical agenda would necessarily change if superpowered individuals (the “Aberrant”) walked among us.

Predictably, Aberrant hasn’t gone unnoticed by Hollywood’s movers and shakers. The animation rights to the series were picked up by Ryan Colucci’s Spoke Lane Entertainment. The plan is for a hand-drawn series.

Aberrant will be out this June.
