Review – Bravest Warriors #4 and Supurbia #3

Bravest Warriors #4

BravestWarriors_04_preview_Page_01The new series from the creator of Adventure Time is now an ongoing series. This issue marks the conclusion of the debut arc. The Bravest Warriors have to band together to defeat the most nefarious villain of all…Sadness, bro! But Sadness isn’t going down without a weepy fight!

If there’s one comic I seem to laugh at consistently, it’s Bravest Warriors, a twister adult story with the look of a children’s cartoon. The first arc wraps up with a conclusion that at the same time made my head hurt and had me laughing.

The conclusion of the arc is over the top and putting two much thought into it, you might not enjoy it, but the comic is supposed to be over the top and not necessarily make sense. To offend, to make you laugh, to entertain you, this comic does that and more.

Bravest Warriors, I might have had my doubts, but so glad I checked it out. A great series that keeps me entertained month after month with each issue.

Supurbia #3

Supurbia_03_preview_Page_2After last month’s shocking events, Hella struggles to keep her carefully constructed suburban world from crumbling around her… While Jeremy and Eli attempt to escape the jungles of Mongolia, with the Daughters of Bright Moon hot on their tail, the Jenkins marriage hits a snag as Tia wishes to rejoin the “workforce…” Zari and Sara’s play-date is crashed by an uninvited visitor, and Gio makes an announcement that shocks the world, but none more so than Paul… All that, AND a cliffhanger that will have everyone talking. Don’t miss it!

That cliffhanger was good, but I think the highlight of the comic is right there on one of the covers, the one with Agent Twilight and hints at Night Fox. The most soap opera-esque plot line also gets the least number of pages. There’s a lot going on and a decent amount to keep track of, but Randolph pulls it off masterfully, making it easy to follow and everything gets the time it deserves.

The series might star characters that’d fit in any super hero comic, it’s more soap opera than anything else and it’s beyond entertaining. If you’re a fan of super hero comics, but are bored of the usual bad guy vs. good guy plots, do yourself a favor and check out this series.

Review – Supurbia #1

One of my favorite mimi-series to come out in a while was Grace Randolph‘s Supurbia by BOOM! Studios. So, you can imagine my excitement when it was announced the series would be back as an ongoing series. But, the fear I had was if this new series could match the excellence of that too brief mini-series. Well, the first issue matches that high hurdle.

Meet the Meta Legion, the world’s foremost faction of crime-fighting capes. But what happens when the masks come off and the heroes are faced with the sordid problems of everyday life in the suburbs? That’s the idea behind this series which is part Justice League and part daytime soap opera. Do you want the hero who is hiding a former villain from being brought to justice? Check. Will he and her get caught? Check. How about a super hero and his sidekick getting a bit closer than fighting crime? Check. What about another villain in their midst? Check.

This is a daytime soap in comic form, with all of the cattiness and hair pulling you’d expect. Less fighting bad guys! More fighting each other’s bitchiness! The series is fantastic, with so many different plot threads picking up from the mini-series, but laid out in a way that you don’t need to read what’s come before (but you should!).

The art by Russell Dauterman is solid matching the fun tone of the comic series somehow creating a style crossing a fun action comic with a humor comic. It works really well and is a good team up.

The series is unique in it’s twist, perspective and execution that’ll appeal to a broad swatch of comic fans. Do yourself a favor and pick up not just this first issue, but the trade of the mini-series that’s come before.
