Review: Transformers/Ghostbusters #1

Transformers/Ghostbusters #1

Transformers/Ghostbusters #1 shouldn’t work. One has to do with robots and the other ghosts. In fairness, Transformers did have the ghost of Starscream haunting Cybertron for a bit. But, the concept just sounds so out there. But it works. It really works and does so very well. Both Transformers and Ghostbusters are celebrating 35 years this year and IDW Publishing has put together this miniseries to celebrate (as well as Hasbro with the toy spinoff).

The story spins the original Ghostbusters film a bit with Gozer winding up on Cybertron a little after the Autobots fled the planet. From there the journey heads to Earth where a signal is discovered by the Autobots that they must investigate. And, the two teams come together.

What’s interesting is writer Erik Burnham spins familiar things we’ve seen mixing it up enough to be original but also leaving enough to be familiar. The new Autobot Ecto has a personality that is straight out of the Ghostbusters and the art by Dan Schoening feels like a combination of the Transformers and Ghostbusters cartoons.

All of it comes together to what is a surprisingly fun comic. I finished it with a smile on my face and wanting to read more immediately. It’s all set up but it’s a good one that’ll get you to want to come back for more. And it works really well using familiar things with a slightly different spin.

Transformers/Ghostbusters #1 is a comic I’m honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I went in thinking a simple cash grab and came out smiling and wanting more. It’s a celebration of two properties that feel so far apart but its shown can work together.

SDCC 2019: The Transformers and Ghostbusters Mashup in Ecto-35 from Hasbro

Both Transformers and Ghostbusters are celebrating their 35th anniversaries. Later this year, they’ll team-up and mashup in a comic series from IDW Publishing which has already spun off a toy dubbed Ectotron out in July.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Hasbro will release a second figure which features Optimus Prime in a new scheme.

Ecto-35 features Optimus Prime with a white color scheme and a Ghostbusters logo and motto on the side. Add in a splash of green slime. The trailer converts into a base to bust ghosts and comes with supplies like a ghost trap. The packaging even turns into a proton pack!

The MP-10G Optimus Prime Ecto-35 Edition will be available at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and retails for $149.99.

Eaglemoss Hero Collector Invites Fans to Build the Original Ghostbusters Ecto-1

Eaglemoss Hero Collector gets all spooky in June when it introduces the Build the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 subscription program at the first-ever Ghostbusters Fan Fest at the Sony Pictures Studio Lot in Culver City, California.

Collectors, die-cast enthusiasts, hobbyists and generations of Ghostbusters fans will soon be able to build their very own ECTO-1 in the comfort of their own home or firehouse. This unique subscription program regularly delivers plans, parts and behind-the-scenes insights with which to easily assemble a perfect 1:8-scale die-cast replica of one of the most instantly recognizable vehicles in motion picture history – the ECTO-1 as featured in the original Ghostbusters movie, now celebrating its 35th anniversary.

Based on a careful study of the actual 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance used in the 1984 supernatural comedy, every possible detail of the ECTO-1 has been carefully reproduced in 1:8 scale. The doors, hood and windows all open, the headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and emergency lights all work, the siren sounds, and the steering wheel turns the front wheels.  The completed model is over 31-inches long, close to 10-inches wide and showcases the custom modifications made by Dr. Ray Stantz himself, including:

  • Ghostbusting Roof Rack with intricately reproduced and poseable P.K.E.-detection tools
  • Rotating Lights that illuminate and spin in tandem with the emergency siren
  • Opening Hood that reveals the highly detailed replica Cadillac V8 engine
  • Working Headlights and Tail Lights operated from the dashboard
  • Tires and Hubcaps with screen accurate Cadillac and Remington branding
  • 5 Opening Doors that allow access to the authentically detailed interior

Subscriptions are slated to begin in the fall, though the model and the car on which it’s based will be showcased at the first-ever Ghostbusters Fan Fest to be held June 7-8, 2019 on the world-famous Sony Pictures Studio Lot in Culver City, California. Attendees who sign up to the online newsletter and/or have their pictures taken with the model and post on social media will receive exclusive gifts at the event.

All fans are encouraged to register their interest and be eligible for the risk-free introductory offer.
