Dark Nights: Death Metal #2

Review: Dark Nights: Death Metal #1

DARK NIGHTS: DEATH METAL #1

Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 is an interesting comic. For the first half, I felt like I was completely lost and had missed something. In reality, I did. I’ve mostly skipped DC Comics‘ “Year of the Villain.” But, writer Scott Snyder does something interesting. There’s a point the comic pivots and catches up the reader. While you might be lost to start, after a while, the comic becomes new reader-friendly. The deep end becomes a shallow wade into the pool.

The Earth has been enveloped by the Dark Multiverse. The Batman Who Laughs has won the favor of Perpetua. The Justice League is at the mercy of the Batman Who Laughs. Humanity struggles to survive in a hellish landscape twisted beyond recognition, while Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman have all been separated and fight to survive.

Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 kicks off the latest chapter of Scott Snyder‘s meta-narrative that has added so much to the DC Universe. Along with his co-conspirator, artist Greg Capullo, this first issue ups the “metal” to straight-up “death metal.”

This issue is an interesting one as much of its enjoyment is to see what crazy ideas are come up with. With the Dark Multiverse opening up an infinite playground, The creative team gets to play in an endless sandbox creating variations of Batman that becomes part of the fun. B-Rex anyone? Yes, there’s a dinosaur Batman now. But that cranking it up past 11 also means each sequence needs to really bring it as well. Batman raising a ghost army. The reveal of a mysterious prisoner. Wonder Woman’s actions. It’s all amped-up and exciting keeping the readers on their toes. In a world where any twisted idea is possible, we get some pretty crazy twisted ideas.

There are some issues with the comic in that not enough is explained and things feel like they’re a bit too focused on a few locations but the action is tight and exciting reveals keep readers on their toes.

That action is helped by Capullo’s art which does sinister with a rock twist. You could easily go over the top in the scary department when it comes to The Batman Who Laughs, but Capullo never crosses that line giving us a darker take on the traditional superhero style. That just means a lot more spikes and pointed teeth really. Capullo is helped on ink by Jonathan Glapion, coloring by FCO Plascencia, and lettering by Tom Napolitano. It all comes together with an attitude that near matches the hype. There’s a few images that are fantastic (no spoilers) and a weakened Swamp Thing stands out in a comic that’s full of interesting visuals.

The team really nails the first issue. At first, you might feel lost but it all comes together. Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 really starts to connect the dots and finish the puzzle of a big picture story that was started years ago. We get some action but we also get the start of an event that feels like it’ll begin to really pay off for those who have stuck around for so long and trusted there was a bigger picture at work. You might think this is the next chapter of Dark Nights: Metal, but Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 ties into so much more of what’s been going on.

Review: Batman: Last Knight on Earth

Batman: Last Knight on Earth

Twenty years in the future, Bruce Wayne wakes up in Arkham Asylum. Young. Sane. And… he’s never been Batman. So begins this sprawling tale of the Dark Knight as he embarks on a quest through a devastated DC landscape. Batman: Last Knight on Earth is finally collected and as a whole the comic is rather… predictable.

Written by Scott Snyder the three-issue series starts off well enough but as it progresses the reveals, for the most part, become rather predictable (who the villain is) or unexplained shock value. The series feels like a shock value read in that the visuals and concepts are enough to entertain. The story itself is rather shallow and in many ways feels like something Snyder has done before.

The story is a journey for Bruce as Batman as he discovers the new DC landscape and attempts to piece together what has happened. A new villain dubbed Omega is the end boss. The identity of the villain becomes fairly obvious early on. In many ways, this all feels like a retread and extension of Snyder’s gonzo Dark Multiverse concept and with it one of the best villains of DC, The Batman Who Laughs.

While the journey Snyder puts Batman through could be interesting in an examination of the character, it instead feels like a reference check list. We’re taken to locations but it never gets too deeps in an examination of our hero and his legacy. It’s flash without depth. Cool concepts that aren’t explored enough. This is the basis of an interesting world and feels like a bunch of ideas on a white board instead of an interesting narrative.

Snyder is joined by his often partner in crime Greg Capullo who delivers his usual impressive visuals. Jonathan Glapion provides ink, FCO Plascencia the color and Tom Napolitano the lettering. The visuals are a whirlwind of cool with interesting takes on characters that much like Snyder’s narrative hints at something so much more. We can guess the crap that’s been seen and battles waged but little is dedicated to that. We get some mentions but little exploration beyond that.

The world itself is one of weird and wonderful as if we’re descending into the different levels of Hell. Much like the story itself, there’s some interesting things that could have been done with the visuals to take it to the next level as far as page layouts and panels but for the most part we’re left with a pretty standard comic in that sense. A sweeping tale didn’t get the sweeping art it needed. But, the detail is fantastic and makes you want to learn more of the how and the why of this world.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth is an entertaining enough story but it doesn’t match what Snyder and Capullo have delivered before. There’s a lack of emotional punch and connection. There’s also the lack of exploration of the impact of what’s presented. It’s danced around but never quite makes its case. It’s a Cliff’s Notes final product of something that could be so much more.

Dark Nights: Death Metal #2

Dark Nights Goes from Metal to Death Metal

This May, Dark Nights cranks it up from “Metal” to “Death Metal” in Dark Nights: Death Metal, the follow up to the game-changing DC event. Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, and FCO Plascencia return to deliver a bigger, louder, and faster sequel to the 2017 series.

Dark Nights: Metal was a hit and introduced the Dark Multiverse and the popular villain, the Batman Who Laughs.

The encore is a six-issue miniseries with the first issue landing on May 13, 2020. Beyond the main story, there’ll also be several “Metalverse” one-shots throughout the summer months expanding upon the world created by the Death Metal storyline.

The series is a follow up to Metal and picks up on some of the threads from that series, as well as being a complete event on its own.

Dark Nights: Death Metal spins out of the events of Scott Snyder’s Justice League run and Year of the Vilain: Hell Arisen by James Tynion IV. The Earth has been consumed by Dark Multiverse energy, having been conquered by the Batman Who Laughs and his evil lieutenants, corrupted versions of Shazam, Donna Troy, Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Hawkman, and Commissioner Jim Gordon. Some heroes, like Wonder Woman and the Flash, have made compromises as they negotiate to keep humanity alive in this hell-born landscape. Others, like Batman, are part of an underground resistance looking to take back control of their world. Superman is imprisoned, cursed to literally power Earth’s sun for eternity.

But a mysterious figure provides Wonder Woman with vital information she might be able to use to rally Earth’s remaining heroes to resist the Batman Who Laughs. Can the Justice League break away from the Dark Multiverse and defeat Perpetua?

Dark Nights: Death Metal‘s first three issues will be released in May, June, and July then resume in September, October, and November. The first issue features a main cover by Capullo, Glapion, and Plascencia, a “Batman Variant” by David Finch, “Superman Variant” by Francesco Mattina, “Wonder Woman Variant” by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, 1:100 “Death Metal Variant” by Capullo and Glapion.
