Lost Siegel And Shuster Superman Story To Be Published in New Action Comics #1000: 80 Years of Superman Hardcover Book

A new hardcover book, Action Comics #1000: 80 Years of Superman, is being published by DC Entertainment as part of its celebration of the one-thousandth issue of Action Comics—the longest continually published comic book of its kind in history, the series that introduced Superman to the world and the title that launched the superhero genre. The collection features a series of essays and iconic Superman stories edited by former DC Publisher Paul Levitz. Most notably, the book includes a never before published 12-page story from original Superman writer Jerry Siegel with art by the Joe Shuster Studio titled “Too Many Heroes.”

The 384-page hardcover book will cost $29.99 and hit store shelves on April 19. Highlights and key Superman stories in this collection include:

  • A new cover by legendary artist and DC Publisher Jim Lee
  • Text pieces including: an editor’s note by Paul Levitz, a tribute to Action Comics by Laura Siegel Larson (daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel), an introduction by Jules Feiffer, plus essays by Tom DeHaven (“It’s Superman!”), David Hajdu (“The Ten-Cent Plague”), Larry Tye (“Superman: The High-Flying History of America’s Most Enduring Hero”) and Gene Luen Yang (Superman, New Super-Man and the National Book Award finalist “American Born Chinese”)

Dick Giordano Artwork in League of Champions #14

The League of Champions returns in September with issue #14, cover-dated October, featuring an all-new, book-length adventure that includes 8 pages of previously unpublished artwork by comic book legend Dick Giordano.

This all-new issue of Heroic Publishing‘s superhero team comic book picks up precisely where issue #13 left off. With Earth under threat of invasion by six powerful Lords of Chaos, twelve different Champions have split into six teams of two in order to face down the menace. And in the tradition of the classic superhero team comics of the 1940s, each chapter of this new League of Championa Adventure is drawn by an artist associated with one of the featured characters.

First, comics’ shining goddess of light, FLARE, teams up with the all-new GIANT to deal with the malevolent MOUNTAIN MASTER. This chapter is draw by Giant’s regular artist, Chris Marrinan, who in various issues of Heroic’s flagship Champions title was also one of the first artists ever to draw Flare.

Next, Heroic’s master of magic, DOCTOR ARCANE, teams up with the TIGRESS to take on the formidable FOREST FIEND. This chapter was drawn by the late, great, Dick Giordano, who before his untimely death was slated to be the Tigress’s regular artist. Sadly, Dick was able to draw only five Tigress adventures. This was Dick’s fourth Tigress tale. The first three appeared in Champions #37, Flare #35, and Champions #40. The fifth and final Giordano Tigress adventure is tentatively scheduled to appear in print sometime in 2013.

And to wrap up this issue, ICESTAR teams up with Flare’s electric little sister SPARKPLUG against the deadly DESERT DESPOT. This chapter is drawn by TERRY PALLOT, who was Sparkplug’s principal artist during her several-issue run as a regular back-up feature in issues of Flare.

The story will continue in League of Champions #15, and conclude is the super-sized Champion Annual #3, currently scheduled for a summer 2013 release.

Unpublished Dick Giordano Artwork Set for League of Champions #14

DICK GIORDANO’S PENULTIMATE TIGRESS ADVENTURE!

Did you know that before his untimely passing, comic book great Dick Giordano was on tap to be the regular artist for Heroic Publishing’s Tigress character? In addition to the stories that appeared in Tales of the Champions #4, Flare #35, and Champions #40, there exist two more Giordano-drawn Tigress tales. The first of these, an eight-page team-up between the Tigress and Heroic’s mystic hero, Doctor Arcane, has been scheduled for League of Champions #14, with a tentative release date of June, 2012.

The remaining Giordano Tigress tale has not yet been scheduled, but will most likely appear either in an upcoming issue of Heroic’s flagship Champions title, or in an issue of a revived Tigress solo magazine.

SANTA’S LI’L ELFIN GRANDDAUGHTER IS BACK!

CHRISSIE CLAUS returns for her annual Christmas visit in the pages of Adventures of Chrissie Claus #4.

This holiday special from Heroic Publishing features Santa’s li’l elfin granddaughter on a mission to rescue her friend Missy Mistletoe from the clutches of the evil Anti-Claus. It’s the thrilling conclusion to her epic confrontation with her arch-enemy Cernunnos, in a story by Wilson Hill, with artwork by Rob Jones and comic book legend Dick Giordano. This adventure of Chrissie Claus was one of Dick Giordano’s last works before his untimely passing.

This issue of the Adventures of Chrissie Claus also features a cover by Frank Brunner, and a special bonus feature by Dennis Mallonee and Tim Burgard, in which comics’ shining goddess of light, FLARE, tells the story of Christmas.

Dick Giordano Passes

Bob Layton passed on the news.

Dear Friends & Colleagues,
It is my sorrowful duty to announce that legendary artist/editor/entrepreneur Dick Giordano passed away today.
Few could ever hope to match what he accomplished in his chosen profession, or to excel while maintaining great humor, compassion for his peers and an unwavering love for the art form.
His unique vision changed the comic industry forever and all of those who work in the business continue to share in the benefits of his sizable contributions.
I have been honored to call him a business partner, mentor and dear friend throughout the majority of my lifetime.
We will not see his like again.

Giordano had many roles including editor-in-chief for Charlton oversaw the creation of the Charlton heroes, which he helped bring over to DC Comics when he joined the company.  He also was an inker lending his talents to Crisis On Infinite Earths and working with Neal Adams. He was 77.
