Apes Top Robots at the Box Office

dawn of the planet of the apesIt’s not much of a surprise, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the weekend box office earning an estimated $73 million. That debut is about a 33% improvement from 2011’s Planet of the Apes which debuted with $54.8 million.

The film’s audience was 58% male and 55% over the age of 25. Diversity was also present with the crowd roughly 48% Caucasian, 23% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. The film received an A- CinemaScore and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it comes to other comic related movies, Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to second, earning $16.5 million. Domestically the film has earned $209 million and internationally $543.5 million.

The Edge of Tomorrow earned an additional $1.865 million the past weekend to bring it’s domestic gross to $94.55 million in it’s sixth week at the box office. Internationally the film has earned $256 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 16th place adding a little over $1 million to bring the domestic total to $229.2 million. Internationally the film has earned $731.4 million.

Snowpiercer added $677,000 to it’s total and brings the domestic amount to $2.7 million. Internationally the film has earned $80.2 million. Interestingly in this third week of release the film was released on video on demand, so the amount earned that way isn’t reflected in the total.

As far as worldwide grosses for 2014 of comic related movies, Transformers is now on top with $752.5 million, X-Men is second at $731.4 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is third at $712.4 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is fourth at $705 million, the Edge of Tomorrow is in tenth place at $350.6 million, 300: Rise of an Empire is twelfth with $331.1 million, Snowpiercer is 33rd with $82.9 million, and We Are the Best! has earned $157,000 to be at spot 150. At the end of the month Guardians of the Galaxy opens, which is likely to vault into one of the top earning spots of the year.

Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Poster-Optimus-and-GrimlockAccording to reports, the Fourth of July weekend was weak at the box office. Without any blockbuster competition,Transformers: Age of Extinction remained at the top of the box office with an estimated $36.4 million. As far as other “comic book” movies Edge of Tomorrow, which is based on the Japanese light novel/manga series All You Need Is Kill, fell to #10 in its fifth weekend. The film added $3.6 million which brings its domestic total to $90.9 million. The film has earned $248.6 million overseas.

Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Poster-Optimus-and-GrimlockAs expected, Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the box office, bringing in an estimated $100 million in North America, with a $41.6 million opening day. What’s amazing is, the film has also done amazing overseas bringing in around $90 million in China over its first three days. That’s a record for that market, and the film’s final act was set in the country with a high profile Chinese actress in it as well. The film also earned $111.3 million from other foreign markets. That puts it at $301.3 million for the opening weekend. Transformers: Age of Extinction cost an estimated $325 million.

The movie received an A- CinemaScore, and %17 on Rotten Tomatoes, showing off the polarizing reviews.

Comics at the Box Office

edge of tomorrowWhile there wasn’t any new “comic” based movies debuting this past weekend, there were still quite a few in the theaters. Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow is still doing decent at the box office, dropping 37.4% in its third weekend and earned $10.3 million. Domestically the film has earned $74.5 million, and will wind up somewhere around $100 million when its domestic run ends. Internationally the film added $21.5 million to bring its international total to $218.3 million. Japan has yet to open, so internationally the film should wind up around $300 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is still going strong in its fifth week. It earned $6.2 million domestically and is up to $216.8 million. Globally the film has earned $692 million.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still in theaters and earned $600,000 for $199.5 million domestically. Globally, the film is at $702.8 million.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned $197,000 and globally it has earned $710.7 million. The film is the top earner globally this year and tied with The Lego Movie to be the top earner domestically.

The top earning films so far this year are movies based on comic books. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is on top but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to be close, and might top the film. X-Men: Days of Future Past is right now in third and doing well, so we’ll see where it ends up.

This coming week sees the opening of Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Snowpiercer, based on the graphic novel.

Edge of Tomorrow, Days of Future Past, Spider-Man & Cap’s Weekend Box Office

edge of tomorrowThere were some high profile sequels debuting at the box office this past weekend, so it’s not a surprise they topped the box office. But, there were still quite a few “comic” movies in the theaters.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is in its fourth week, and came in sixth place. The film earned $9.5 million had has earned a total of $205.9 million domestically and $455.8 overseas. It’s now the top earning moving of the summer so far. Domestically it ranks third for “X” films, and fourth adjusted for inflation, though has a good chance of moving up some spots.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in its seventh week and is now in 12th place domestically. It has earned a total $198.4 million domestically. The total is disappointing compared to previous Spidey films.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is close to being the top movie domestically of 2014. The Lego Movie currently has the top spot. Globally, Cap is in the lead with Spidey about $10 million behind. In fact Cap, Spidey, and DOFP make up the top three films so far in 2014 globally.

Days of Future Past Crosses $600 Million, Edge of Tomorrow Stumbles

days of future past movie posterThere was some good and some bad when it came to comic book movies at the box office this past weekend.

X-Men: Days of Future Past dropped 55 percent and earned an estimated $14.7 million. The movie’s 17-day total is now about $189.1 million. At the international market, the film grossed $42.1 million over the weekend. In China, it added $7.5 million and passed $100 million total. Overall, the movie has earned $421 million overseas and $610 million worldwide. It will probably reach the $700 million mark when it’s over.

Domestically, the film ranks third for X-Men films, but fifth when you adjust it for inflation. Worldwide, the film is in first not adjusted.

edge of tomorrowThe new “comic film” Edge of Tomorrow stumbled in its first week, even with good reviews. The movie is based on the Japanese book All You Need is Kill, which is also adapted as a graphic novel. The film came in third for the weekend with an estimated $29.1 million.

Edge‘s audience was 61 percent male and 73 percent over the age of 25. Showings in 3D accounted for 47 percent of ticket sales, while IMAX delivered $4.2 million.

The film is currently around 89 percent on Rotten tomatoes and a decent B+ CinemaScore.

Overseas, the film earned $82 million, which includes $25 million in the China debut, the largest ever opening for Tom Cruise in the country. In South Korea, it earned $16.6 million, and $8.6 million in Russia, $3.2 million in France, $3.1 million in Mexico, and $2.8 million in Australia. The film opens in Japan July 4th.

Days of Future Past Drops to Second

days of future past movie posterAs expected X-Men: Days of Future Past dropped to second place this past weekend at the box office after its first place debut the previous week. The film earned an estimated $32.6 million, that’s a drop of 64 percent. That puts the film at about $162.1 million domestically.

Internationally, the film earned $95.6 million bringing the international total to around $338 million. That includes a second place opening in Japan, and it has yet to open in Spain.

When you put the domestic and international totals together, Days of Future Past has crossed the $500 million mark worldwide. It is the first “X” film to do so. When you look at the domestic totals the film currently ranks fourth and fifth when you adjust the films for inflation. It’ll likely move up a slot before its theatrical run is over.
