Transformers/Back to the Future #1

IDW Publishing has been having fun lately bringing together properties you’d never expect. Much has revolved around the Transformers who have had recent comic miniseries featuring My Little Pony and Ghostbusters. And, both of those have been great with a fun spin on the properties and a crossover that works. The latest adventure for the Transformers takes them through time as Marty McFly and Back to the Future takes center stage. Transformers/Back to the Future #1 kicks things off with a story that works, makes sense, and uses the strength of both properties.

Written by Cavan Scott, Transformers/Back to the Future #1 is the setup to the familiar ending where Marty is told he needs to go and fix the timestream to save everything. The debut issue is full of the familiar in both winks and nods and it’s storytelling. There are scenes directly lifted from the original Back to the Future but done in a way that it sets up what happens and helps introduce that classic film to new readers.

What’s interesting is that Scott just blends the two worlds. This isn’t a story where they’re part of a multiverse or some weird portal like the My Little Pony crossover. Instead, it’s 1984 and the Decepticons and Autobots are on Earth like the classic television series and comics. It just so happens Marty and Doc Brown also live on the world as well and doing their thing. It’s just a simple solution to bring the two properties together and avoids a messy explanation. It also plays a bit with what feels like the original crossover with the Transformers and G.I. Joe. They just so happen to be on the same planet.

Scott delivers a straightforward concept for those that enjoy Back to the Future and the direction from the first issue is simple. And keeping it simple is a good thing. With time travel it can get complicated and here it’s not with motivations that make sense for all. We’re left with similar questions from other films, what needs to be done to fix the timestream and how did it get messed up in the first place? That’s all part of the fun to come.

The art for Transformers/Back to the Future #1 is interesting. The style takes its queues from IDW’s Back to the Future comics with a more comedy/comic style to it. Juan Samu delivers exaggerated characters in the humans which creates a cartoon-like quality about it all. David Garcia‘s colors add to that with an end result that feels a lot like the Back to the Future cartoon. That works for the most part but with the more “serious” aspect of the Transformers, it’s at times a weird mix that leads to some tonal issues for the comic. There’s some comedy but then there’s enslavement? It’s a weird mix and clashes in some ways.

I generally enjoyed Transformers/Back to the Future #1. There’s a fun aspect to it all where it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It also knows its material and feels like it revels in switching up some of the roles and aspects in Back to the Future to fit the Transformers in. It’s what comics should be, fun. For fans of both properties, it’ll get you to want to buckle up and go back in time.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Snake Eyes: Dead Game #2

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

American Ronin #1 (AWA Studios) – Corporations engage in a silent war for global domination using highly-skilled, technologically-enhanced operatives to wage war. What happens when one of those operatives breaks free of the control?

American Vampire 1976 #1 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The fantastic series is back for another ride as Skinner Sweet must help with a heist to help stop a true evil.

Batman #100 (DC Comics) – “Joker War” wraps up with this issue and it’s a hell of a finale.

Champions #1 (Marvel) – The first issue was solid and plants the flag as to what this latest volume of Champions is all about. Read our review.

Getting It Together #1 (Image Comics) – A family/friend drama about relationships and friendship. There’s something intriguing about this dramedy from Sina Grace, Omar Spahi, and MX Struble.

Hollywood Trash #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – A top entertainment mogul puts a hit on two local garbage men who have stolen from him. It’s one epic day of sword fights, forest fires, and giant mechs!

Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology #1 (Dark Horse) – Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell, Mike Mignola, and Jerry Ordway is enough to sell us on this series that breathes “new life into action Norse stories.”

Penultiman #1 (AHOY Studios) – The Next-To-Last-Stage In Human Evolution, is the greatest, best-looking, and most admired super-hero in the world! So how can he stop hating himself? His android understudy, Antepenultiman, thinks he knows the answer!

Snake Eyes: Deadgame #2 (IDW Publishing) – The first issue was solid as Rob Liefeld does his thing with the beloved G.I. Joe character. It exceeded our expectations and we’re hoping the second issue does the same.

Transformers/Back to the Future #1 (IDW Publishing) – The two classic properties crossing over might seem silly but IDW has been knocking it out of the park with these sort of stories these past few years. We love both Transformers and Back to the Future, so we’re in.

The Walking Dead Deluxe #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – If you’ve never read the modern classic series, here’s your chance. Colored for the first time, it’ll be interesting to see how the horror/zombie series might be different in color compared to its original black and white.

We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #2 (BOOM! Studios) – This is basically Moby Dick with space gods and the art is amazing.

Transformers / Back to the Future #1

Two of the greatest science fiction franchises of the 1980s will collide this fall in an all-new comic book crossover event, Transformers / Back to the Future! Written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Juan Samu, the four-issue miniseries will debut in October from IDW Publishing!

In the debut issue, Marty McFly returns from the adventure of a lifetime to a new, better Hill Valley… that is, until Marty and his friend Doc Brown’s time machine attracts the attention of the Decepticons. With one small mistake, Marty finds himself once again thrust into action to unravel a Decepticon plot in the past, present, and future… now with the help of a new converting time machine, the Autobot called Gigawatt!

Transformers / Back to the Future #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Juan Samu, Cover B by Phil Murphy, and two Retailer Incentive editions — one illustrated by Dan Schoening with the second featuring a photo of the hotly anticipated Autobot Gigawatt toy.

Great Scott! Hasbro, Universal Brand Development, and Amblin Entertainment have revealed the first-ever Transformers-Back to the Future Collaboration, starring the all-new character Gigawatt. This new time-traveling Transformers Autobot commemorates 35 years since the groundbreaking adventure film, Back to the Future, took audiences back in time.

When fans of the iconic Back to the Future Time Machine look a little closer at this nostalgic interpretation of the car, they will be treated to a new “robot in disguise” named Gigawatt, a converting time machine robot. The figure stands at 5.5 inches in Robot mode and can convert to Time Machine mode in 17 steps, plus it includes a blaster and whip antennae accessories, and features movie-inspired details from the film, including Doc Brown-style goggles, a flux capacitor chest piece, and time circuits. In time machine mode, the gullwing doors open and wheels rotate from vertical to horizontal to produce a hovering effect as seen at the end of the film.

In addition to the collectible figure, from IDW comes Transformers / Back to the Future – the four-part, comic book series. The first issue cover is being revealed today, along with the story synopsis: Marty McFly has just returned to his home sweet home, Hill Valley 1985, and everything’s looking up… that is, until Marty and his friend Doc Brown’s time machine attracts the attention of the Decepticons! With one small mistake, Marty finds himself thrust into an adventure to stop the Decepticon plot in the past, present, and future… all with the help of a new time machine: the Autobot, Gigawatt!

The Gigawatt figure is available now for pre-order at Walmart.com with only 1,985 pieces available that feature an exclusive, limited edition numbered package in honor of the 35th anniversary of the first film’s release – July 3, 1985. A second variant release of the figure will be available starting October 1, 2020 via HasbroPulse.com and select retailers around the world; part one of the comic book also will be available October 1, wherever comic books are sold.
