SDCC 2023: Magma Comix forges a new path as an independent publisher

Magma Comix

Imprint Magma Comix is forging a new path independent of legendary magazine Heavy Metal.

Originally founded in 2020 by industry veteran Denton J. Tipton (IDW Publishing, Opus Comics), the newly minted comic book publisher is dedicated to the belief in the value of creativity and also recognizes that it all starts with the creator.

Magma Comix creators will be given a fair and transparent deal with advance royalties, as well as first-look deals with partners to be revealed. The publisher will offer direct market support through a multi-distributor approach with simple, low-risk ordering for retailers, with a limited number of variant covers and returnability. The catalog will feature new and original fiction for mature audiences.

The company launches with a team of industry veterans, including Editor-in-chief Bobby Curnow, Sales and Marketing Manager Joel Elad (IDW, Top Cow), and Operations Manager Mike Ford (IDW). Jeff Webber of The Webber Agency will represent the publisher for international sales and licensing.

Magma Comix will announce projects in the coming months with legendary creators and talented newcomers, along with an innovative program to help all creators get published.

To learn more, check out the Magma Comix Resurfaces! panel at San Diego Comic-Con International, Friday July 21, 7:00-8:00 PM in Room 4. Come meet the team and find out which of your favorite creators will be involved!

J. Michael Tatum added to Otakon 2023’s Guest List

J. Michael Tatum

Voice actor J. Michael Tatum will be a guest at Otakon 2023, according to Otakorp Inc. His notable roles include characters from “My Hero Academia,” “Ouran High School Host Club,” “Black Butler” and “Steins;Gate.”

Nurtured on anime classics from the tender age of “Star Blazers,” this reclusive actor/writer spent more years than he cares to remember in what might charitably be called free-fall before landing, mostly by accident, smack dab on the industry of his dreams.

Cast as Rikichi in 2005’s “Samurai 7,” Tatum’s inexplicable luck has held long enough to see his flag hoisted on a slew of dream roles, most notably Kyoya Otori in “Ouran High School Host Club”; suave, demonic Sebastian Michaelis in “Black Butler”; Tomoe from “Kamisama Kiss”; and Okarin Rintarou from “Steins;Gate.” More recently, Tatum can be heard in the epic “My Hero Academia” as Teyna Iida; Louis in “Fire Emblem: Engage”; and Moran in “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.” Other characters he’s played include: Eneru in “One Piece”; Ryosuke Takahashi in “Initial D”; Kraft Lawrence in “Spice and Wolf”; Zarbon in “Dragon Ball Z Kai”; Scar in “Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood”; Acnologia in “Fairy Tale”; and Erwin Smith in “Attack on Titan.”

His videogame credits include Sir Hammerlock from the “Borderlands” franchise; Julius Kresnik from “Tales of Xillia 2”; Mr. Foster from “Killing Floor 2”; Kelvin and Pendles from “Battleborn”; fifteen playable characters from “SMITE”; and August Wallenstein from “Tales of Luminaria.”

Ever the workaholic, Tatum is currently burning the midnight oil on a number of exciting projects due for release later this year. He also co-hosts “Ghoul Intentions,” a spooky podcast dedicated to creeping you out.

Otakon 2023 will be held from July 28 to July 30 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Michael Vescera to Perform at Otakon 2023

Michael Vescera

American heavy metal singer Michael Vescera will be a guest at Otakon 2023, according to Otakorp Inc. He will be a guest singer at the Yaiba concert.

Vescera has been a singer for various bands and projects, such as Loudness, Obsession, Yngwie Malmsteen, Animetal USA, D-Metal Stars and presently AniMaze X.

In 2011 Mike started ANIMETAL USA (Sony Music), playing heavy metal versions of Japanese anime theme songs (following in the steps of the Japanese project Animetal). This project features Rudy Sarzo on bass, Scott Travis on drums (later, Jon Dette on drums), and Chris Impelliterri on guitar. “Animetal USA 1” and “Animetal W” both charted at number one In Japan. Two successful tours of Japan followed, sharing the bill with Jam Project, along with an appearance at “LoudPark” and Anime Expo in Los Angeles. Animetal USA also collaborated and recorded the theme song for the Naruto spin-off, “Rock Lee and his Ninja Pals” as well as a song for Ressha Sentai ToQger 2 mini album – 2014 (Columbia), “I’ve been working on the railroad” (metal version), Animetal USA with Shogo
Kamata (Japanese vocal).

In mid-2016, in a spin-off of the Animetal USA project, Vescera with Rudy Sarzo on bass, John Bruno (Obsession) on guitar, and BJ Zampa (House of Lords) on drums, recorded a new project. This project, D-Metal Stars, “Metal Disney” was released in October 2016 on Walt Disney Records in the Japanese market. It reached No. 3 on the Amazon Japan Hard Rock / Metal Best Sellers chart, and No. 2 on the Children’s Chart. The album was then released for the U.S. market in March 2017 by Universal Music Group, landing on the Billboard, iTunes, and Amazon charts.

In 2018, Vescera produced and arranged a rock guitar project called “Disney Super Guitar” (titled “Super Guitar Disney” in Japanese market). This is an instrumental release featuring a guest lead guitarist on each song, featuring Zakk Wylde, Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, Richie Kotzen, Orianthi, Ron Thal, Mike Orlando, Phil X, Jeff Watson, and Tak Matsumoto. Super Guitar Disney became a No.
1 Best Seller on the Amazon Japan Anime Chart, and No. 3 Best Seller on Amazon Japan Rock Chart.

Mid-2018, Michael launched a new project called AniMaze X. This is a project started by the members of D-Metal Stars that encompasses a wider variety of music themes, such as superheroes, popular cartoons, Broadway musicals and movie soundtracks, all played in the metal style.

Otakon 2023 will be held from July 28 to July 30 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Beyond excess, beyond ethics, beyond science . . . Enter a terrifying new experiment in pain from Eisner Award nominee Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Basilisk) and acclaimed illustrator Jesús Hervás (The Empty Man, Cyberpunk 2077)!

Dr. Carrie Reynolds was a veteran trauma surgeon with a godlike mastery of muscle and bone. But outside the operating room, her rigidly ordered life spiraled into chaos when her daughter, Heather—a recovering plastic surgery addict—suddenly disappeared, only to mysteriously reemerge in a catatonic state, her vocal cords removed . . . the latest in a series of victims scarred by a battery of brazenly cruel medical procedures that have baffled police and left an alarming number of once-ordinary citizens maimed, mutilated, or dead on arrival.

Deep beneath the streets of Carrie’s city, a new kind of underground hospital has opened its doors . . . and, once inside, there are no rules, no oaths, and no taboos too deep to not to be broken. Together, a new class of surgeon has sworn to pierce the final threshold of accepted medical orthodoxy one incision at a time.

The scalpel is their tool. The alleys are their operating theater. Murder is their medicine. And only Carrie can stop what they’re planning next . . .

NIGHT PEOPLE

Written by BARRY GIFFORD & CHRIS CONDON
Art by BRIAN LEVEL, ALEXANDRE TEFENKGI, ARTYOM TOPILIN & MORE
Covers by BRIAN LEVEL, JOËLLE JONES, J.H. WILLIAMS III & MORE

From the mind of literary icon Barry Gifford—internationally renowned creator of Wild at Heart and cowriter of David Lynch’s neo-noir masterpiece Lost Highway—Night People is a pulsating roadmap of the American subconscious, where neon-lit Southern nights give way to lipstick, sweat, and blood, and the odd, the innocent, and the evil are all fellow travelers down an interstate of dark, elusive dreams.

Adapted from Gifford’s acclaimed novel by breakout writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood, The Enfield Gang Massacre) and a rotating cast of stunning artistic talents—including Brian Level (Poison Ivy), Alexandre Tefenkgi (The Good Asian), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and more—follow an uneasy cast of wanted men, cartel-killers, and lost souls through four interlocking tales as they travel a path of intoxication, lust, and spontaneous violence from New Orleans to Egypt City, Florida, and back again.

In our first tale of desperation, fanaticism, and murder: Two ex-convicts—a pair of inseparable lovers named Big Betty Stalcup and Miss Cutie Early—are out on parole using their newfound freedom to purify the world of men’s evil influence . . . and leaving a trail of mutilated bodies in their wake. As the psychotic dimensions of their star-crossed romance—and the twisting paths that first led them to their fateful meeting at the Fort Sumatra Detention Center for Wayward Women—come into full view, their experiment in righteousness culminates in the kidnapping of Rollo Lamar, a kindly attorney whom Betty and Cutie abduct just to see if they can reeducate at least one man on the planet before the demise of civilization.
