Otakon Attendance Grows to 42,000

Otakon

Otakon 2023 exceeded the previous year’s record-breaking number, coming in at about 42,000, according to Otakorp.

Last year’s number of 40,466 astounded many by being the largest event in Washington, D.C., of the postpandemic era. That number broke a previous record that had been set in 2013.

Brian Cutler, the president of Otakorp, said:

We were excited to have so many new and returning friends attend this year, and we cannot wait for next year to celebrate our 30th anniversary!

The attendance number includes total memberships/attendees, both pre-registered and at-door, as well as staff, dealers, artists, industry, contractors, guests, and members of the registered press.

The final number may be adjusted slightly after audits are conducted to ensure accuracy. Updated numbers, when completed, will appear on the Events Statistics page on the official Otakon website.

Otakon 2024 will be held from August 2 to 4 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

NYCC 2023: Robin Lives! Return to Batman #428 and an alternative ending of Jason Todd’s fate

Explore an alternate fate for Jason Todd in DC‘s “faux-simile” coming December 12, 2023. During the “Gotham City Confidential” panel at New York Comic Con 2023, DC announced plans to release a never-before-seen story from its vault. It’s an alternate ending to one of DC’s most polarizing events that took place in Batman #428.

Batman #428‘s “faux-simile” release this December reprints the penultimate chapter of “A Death in the Family,” with a new twist. It’ll feature a previously unpublished ending to the issue. In this version, Jason Todd survives his brutal enounter with The Joker.

“A Death in the Family” was released 35 years ago and was a pretty dark comic in which fans decided Jason’s fate. Dialing into a 900 number (kids, ask your parents), people voted if Jason should live or die. The vote received 10,614 responses and Jason’s fate was decided by 72 votes, 5,343 to 5,271.

This “faux-simile” edition features original story and art from the from “A Death in the Family” storytelling team – writer Jim Starlin, artist Jim Aparo, colorist Adrienne Roy, inker Mike DeCarlo, and letterer John Costanza.

SDCC 2023: The Savage Sword of Conan returns in 2024 as Conan #1 sells over 80,000

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures have revealed the long-awaited return of The Savage Sword of Conan in 2024 – with all-new gritty and gruesome tales from the world of Conan the Barbarian; presented in its original black-and-white, magazine-sized format.

Originally published in 1974, The Savage Sword of Conan featured Robert E. Howard’s iconic Conan the Barbarian untethered from the bounds of the restrictive Comics Code Authority. A darker and more mature title than the flagship Conan the Barbarian comics, The Savage Sword of Conan delved into more gritty and bloody storylines and art, quickly becoming a cult classic publication. The Savage Sword of Conan featured writing and art from legendary creators such as Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Walter Simonson and much more.

Launching in comic shops in 2024 during the 50 year anniversary celebration, the brand-new The Savage Sword of Conan magazine will be written and drawn in its original black-and-white style by a murderers row of writers and artists including John Arcudi, Frank Tieri, Patch Zircher, Howard Chaykin, Rafael Kayanan, Cary Nord, Rebeca Puebla, Dan Panosian, Richard Pace, Gerardo Zaffino, and many more!

Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics new Savage Sword of Conan joins the new ongoing Conan the Barbarian comic series written by Jim Zub, with art by Roberto De La Torre, as well as the continuing archival publishing of Conan the Barbarian: The Original Comics Omnibus and the Savage Sword of Conan: The Original Comics Omnibus. Fans can look out for Volume 9 of the original Savage Sword of Conan series this November.

Also announced at SDCC were the launch sales numbers for Conan the Barbarian Comic #1 which goes on sale August 2 in comic shops everywhere. Confirmed sales of the initial print exceeded 80,000 making Conan #1, the largest selling issue in Titan Comics’ history. With a second printing planned and third printing probable, final sales for this debut issue are expected to exceed 100,000 copies.
