Ford v Ferrari won the weekend coming in first place at the domestic box office. It earned an estimated $31 million beating forecast. The film received an “A+” CinemaScore. That indicates a positive word of mouth was likely behind the solid box office performance. The opening day crowd was 62% male and 79% were aged 25 or older.

Internationally, the film earned $21.4 million from 41 markets for a $52.4 million debut. The film opens on December 5 in South Korea and in Japan on January 10.

Midway dopped to second place dropping 51% earning an estimated $8.8 million to bring its domestic total to $35 million after ten days. It’s possible the film’s position may drop when the actual numbers come in.

Charlie’s Angels finished third earning an estimated $8.6 million in its debut. The film was expected to open between $12-13 million. The film received a “B” CinemaScore from the opening weekend audience. The audience was 61% female and 55% of the audience was 25 or older.

Internationally, the film opened in 26 markets with an estimated $19.3 million. That gives it a $27.9 million global debut. With a budget of $48 million, that total isn’t horrible and long term it should make a tiny profit but this looks like a possible franchise reboot that stumbled out of the gate. It opens in the UK on November 29, Spain on December 5, France on December 25, Mexico on January 1, Germany on January 2, Italy on January 9, Japan on January 21, and South Korea on February 26.

Playing with Fire dropped 33% to come in fourth bringing in an estimated $8.55 million bringing its domestic total to $25.4 million. Internationally, the film earned $1.3 million for a total of $4.5 million.

Rounding out the top five was Last Christmas which earned an estimated $6.7 million to bring its domestic total to $22.6 million after ten days. Internationally, the film earned $13 million to bring its worldwide total to $35.5 million.

In comic film news…

Joker came in eighth at the weekend box office adding $5.6 million to its domestic total. That stands at $322.6 million. Internationally, the film added $13 million to its total to bring that to $694 million. That’s a grand total of $1.017 billion making it the first R-rated film to cross the billion-dollar mark. It’s also:

• The fourth DC Comics adaptation to cross the billion-dollar line
• Seventh film to earn $1 billion in 2019
• The third film to cross $1 billion with a China release
