Together again for the first time! Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. The core of the World’s Greatest Heroes…but with a new Man of Steel, the bonds these three share will be tested and redefined by super-star writer/artist Francis Manapul. In this premiere issue, see the trio travel from Metropolis to Gotham City and beyond to learn what forces launched their heroic careers. But how will this journey of discovery lead them to a new threat?

Trinity #1 is an interesting comic to me. As a single issue, a one-shot, it’s absolutely fantastic. As the first issue to a new series featuring DC Comics’ trinity? That one is not quite as easy and clear cut. The issue essentially brings together Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman to literally break bread. It’s really charming and there’s fantastic moments as the characters come together considering Batman and Wonder Woman know a different Superman and Superman has known a different Batman and Wonder Woman. That’s played to great effect and for new readers it may be really confusing. The issue, along with a few other Rebirth issues lately, make things a bit confusing as to when things take place and the order of events, but that’s something for another post.

The issue is a weird “get to know you” comic as everyone literally has a meal together and talks. As far as getting to know each other and characters laying things on the table, it’s actually really great. It’s something that has been needed, but I’m just not sure it’s needed as a series on its own.

There is no clash here as the issue builds to that. And that building up to the next issue is mostly through Manapul’s amazing art which subtlely adds in whatever is to come in panels for the eagle-eyed readers to pick up on. The art is fantastic, there’s no doubt about that. Each character enters in two page spreads that are awesome (though bats with Batman? Really?). It’s top notch work and the art alone is worth checking it out.

As a single issue, this is a great comic, but it leaves me a bit perplexed as how it’ll work as a series. We don’t get much of an answer here as far as that goes. If you just want a good comic to read, go for it. If you’re looking for a first issue that kicks off the adventures of these three, you may be disappointed.
