With the announcement of Rebirth, many fans were left wondering what has happened to Midnighter, the popular gay superhero, one of the only to headline a comic at the big two publishers at the time. We now know at least the next steps as DC Comics will be publishing Midnighter & Apollo, a new six-issue miniseries that reunites the two heroes, both gay and have had an on-again off-again thing going on.

The series will be written by Steve Orlando with art by Fernando Blanco, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr., and covers by ACO and is a continuation of the Midnighter series.

The characters debuted in 1998 and on his blog Orlando said the characters helped him when he was younger. He also has described boosting the signal to a younger generation as an honor.

Midnighter’s comic series wrapped recently and was praised for its portrayal of the gay superhero who not only kicked ass, but also attempted dating (using apps), and was sexually active. The portrayal was so good the series was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in 2016 for “Outstanding Comic Book.”

In the official release, Orland said:

Midnighter and Apollo have spent time apart—figuring out who they were when defined on their own instead of by their relationship. They have a firmer idea of who they are and they’ve become stronger and more confident together. Midnighter and Apollo are back to remind the world that it truly is a bad time to be bastards. This is the World’s Finest Couple—kicking back and making each other better than they are on their own.

Midnighter & Apollo debuts in October.
