TV Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S1E6 Star City 2046

Legends of Tomorrow PosterIn DC’s Legends of Tomorrow sixth episode has some good, but a hell of a lot of bad as well. A malfunction sends the Waverider to 2046 Star City where the team faces a future in which they fail to stop Savage and return home.

Much like The Flash’s future episode, this one is full of potential that doesn’t quite see that fully realized. The episode has the group trying to rebuild their ship as all hell breaks loose around them. We see a possible future where there’s a new Green Arrow and Oliver is missing and presumed dead. There’s also a new Deathstroke running around and roving gangs. The future is in chaos and what looks like a horrible version of Mad Max. In fact that’s what this episode reminds me the most of, all the Mad Max wannabe films of the 80s with really bad special fx.

I think the production quality is part of what I have issues with in this episode, the costume design and aged make-up for Oliver is laughable at best, I’ve seen D-movies that look better. It just looks bad and the action sequences are force and not at all exciting. It also suffers from bad choreographed action and bad physical actions like a Cirque Du Soleil battle sequence instead of a flowing fight.

The episode also focuses on Jefferson who has a bit of a crush on Kendra. No one at all brings up the age difference and that Jefferson is 18ish, maybe a little older. Ray also develops a bit of a crush and we get some romance brewing that again doesn’t feel natural at all.

This episode had so much potential, but just feels like it was squandered. It shows off the unevenness of the series which hasn’t found its footing at all. One episode is good, another episode has a mix of good and bad. It’s clear everyone is trying to figure out what this series is and who these characters are.
