It’s the crossover nobody ever expected! Star Trek: The hope for the best of mankind’s future! Planet of the Apes: A chilling look at the fall of humanity! How could these worlds possibly collide? What could possibly cause Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise to side with Dr. Zaius to protect Ape City? And what does Colonel George Taylor have to say about it? It’s a madhouse! A madhouse!!

When this comic was first announced by IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios, I scratched my head. First, I was shocked this hadn’t been done before. The second was, how the hell would this work!?

The first issue sets up, and explains how the crew of the Enterprise could make it to the Earth of Planet of the Apes, and it sort of works, in a campy sci-fi sort of way. The feel of the comic is very much in the campy sci-fi that I’d expect at times from classic Star Trek. And part of that camp makes the comic REALLY fun!

The story is fun, and I found myself getting sucked in and just enjoying the story, no matter how strained the mash-up felt at times. There’s only so much that can be explained in the first issue, like the origin of the technology that allows the travel between realities, so maybe some of it will be explained in future issues. So, that gets a pass right now. Then again, it can just be a mechanic to make it all happen, and is never really explained. No matter, it makes the story work, and I felt myself along for the ride.

The art is pretty good, very similar to what I’d expect from IDW’s Star Trek comics or BOOM!’s Planet of the Apes comics. All the characters are very recognizable, so it works well.

I went into the first issue with lots of skepticism, and came away wanting to see where it all goes. If you’re a fan of campy sci-fi, or Star Trek of Planet of the Apes, do yourself a favor and check the series out.
