Godzilla Destroys the Box Office

godzillaGodzilla has stomped into theaters this past weekend with an impressive debut of $93.2 million. It was expected to pull in $65 million, so it clearly exceeded expectations. It is only behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s $95 million for the second largest debut of 2014. Internationally, the film has earned an estimated $103 million. The debut was good enough that word has come out a sequel is already in the works.

As expected men were the majority of the office, making up 58% of the audience, and 60% of the audience was over the age of 25.

The film as a decent 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, and it received a B+ Cinemascore.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 continued to drop, this time 54% in its third week. The film landed in third for the week. It earned an additional $16.2 million, bringing the domestic total to $172.1 million. Internationally, the film earned another $31.5 million, and its total outside the US to $461 million.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier continues to earn, bringing in another $3.8 million to bring its domestic total to $250.6 million. The movie is closing in on The Lego Movie‘s $253.8 million to become to top grossing film of 2014.

This coming week X-Men: Days of Future Past debuts, so next weekend’s box office should be very interesting.
