Otakon Moves to Washington DC in 2017
After a successful 20th anniversary, Otakon the convention announced that the convention was heading about an hour south to Washington, DC starting in 2017. The convention will be in the nation’s capital at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for five years. With an expiring contract, the convention needed to decide whether to remain in Baltimore or look elsewhere.
With a convention center with an uncertain future, the convention looked elsewhere, opening up the process to bids from other cities. While proposals are out to replace the aged Baltimore Convention Center, no concrete plans are in place. Such construction would cause at least a temporary disruption for future shows.
After an evaluation of the lead contenders, DC and Baltimore, a bid was put in place and the voting membership of Otakon chose DC. Otakon is a 501(c)3 education non-profit whose mission is to promote the appreciation of Asian culture, primarily through its media and entertainment. That makes the move to Washington, DC even more appropriate.
With Awesome Con, Otakon and more and more conventions, it’s looking like Washington, DC is finally becoming a hot bed for geek culture, not just politics.
It remains to be seen how the uncertain future of the Baltimore Convention Center will also affect the Baltimore Comic Con.
