The Dark Knight Rises Brings in an Estimated $161.1 Million

Dark Knight Rises Teaser PosterAfter an impressive midnight debut, it looks like The Dark Knight Rises has brought in an estimated $161.1 million for the weekend. That’s the best opening for a 2D movie ever. The Avengers sits on top with the best opening ever for any movie. That number comes after a record setting $30.6 million for it’s midnight debut.

That opening also bests the $158.4 million debut of The Dark Knight in 2008. It places The Dark Knight Rises in the third-highest domestic weekend opening ever, after the 3D films The Avengers with $207.4 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with $169.2 million.

There were some questions as to the impact the Aurora shootings would have on the opening, and while some estimated the movie would open at $175 million, I’d have put that on the high end of the spectrum.

The Hollywood Reporter also cited box office sources who said The Dark Knight Rises earned $70 million from nine of the 17 countries where it debuted over the weekend, including the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea and Spain.

These numbers might change as  Sony, Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate joined Warner Bros in publicly withholding their usual revenue reports out of respect for the victims of the deadly shooting and their families. Warner Bros. also suspended promoting the movie.
