Avengers Heads to Third
The Avengers was in third in more than one way. With an estimated $20.3 million, the film took third place in the weekend box office and also moved into third place as the top grossing film domestically and internationally, though that’s not adjusted for inflation. The film has earned $553 million domestically and globally its total has reached $1.355 billion.
The movie looks like it’ll earn around the $600 million range domestically, but it’d take a hell of a run for it to pass Titanic for the number two place. That movie earned $658.6 million domestically.
The Avengers set another record in May. Its domestic total of $532.5 million for the month accounted for 52% of the entire domestic box office for May. The box office was $1.024 billion which was down from last year’s record total of $1.038 billion.
We’ll see if the love of comic book movies extends to The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises which both open next month.
