Updated – Avengers Shatter Records

$207.4 million is now the record.  That’s the amount The Avengers made it’s opening weekend after a solid, but not record breaking midnight launch of $18.7 million.  That beats $169.2 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 2 last summer.  $80.5 million was earned on Friday (2nd best) which was followed by an estimated $69.7 million on Saturday, a box office record for a Saturday, and another estimated record $50.1 million on Sunday, which would break the record held by The Dark Knight of $43.6 million.

Overseas the movie earned an estimated $151.5 million this weekend, bringing its 12-day total outside North America to $441.5.  It’s worldwide earnings is now $641.8 million.

The movie looked to appeal to men and women, young and old going into it’s opening and the numbers prove it.  The movie was a 50/50 split between those older and younger that 25.  Men dominated making up 60% of the audience.  55% of the debut weekend crowd was composed of couples, with families making up 21% and teens a solid 21% as well.

The movie has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has an A+ rating from audiences so expect it to have legs as word of mouth sends more people into the theaters to see what the hype was about.

Updated: The amount earned is actually $207.4 million instead of the initially reported estimated $200.3 million
