Green Lantern Opens in First Place, But Not Great

Green Lantern Movie PosterGreen Lantern won the weekend, but opened up at the lower end of predictions.  The Warner Bros. movie was at the top of the box office with $52.7 million.  That makes it #20 as far as openings for super hero movies.  3D showings made up for 45% of the take, compared to 60% for Thor when it debuted.

Green Lantern’s opening weekend moviegoers were primarily male (64%) and older (63% over 25, with just 19% under 18 in spite of the film’s “PG-13” rating).

It’s possible early estimates might be off as a late boost on Father’s Day could occur, the movie also had a decent word of mouth and audience score of a B.

Geoff Johns who plays an integral role in DC had a lot to do with the movie and may have some backlash due to it’s underwhelming performance.

Super 8 did well, only dropped 40%, even with the audience being similar to Green Lantern.

In it’s third week, X-Men: First Class fell 52.3% as it earned $11.5 million, bringing it’s domestic total to $119.9 million but overseas it’s made $282 million.
