Review – Abyss TPB

Abyss Trade Paperback CoverI’m new to Red 5 Comics, only have read one or two Atomic Robo comics before, and I’ll admit I was a bit apprehensive about Abyss when it came to my inbox.  I first read the second volume (review later of the first three issues) but when I got the opportunity I devoured the first trade paperback, the series is awesome.

Comics are about escapism.  You want cool powers, good buys beating up the bad guys and some times some humor thrown in.  Abyss is one of those comics that at the same time takes super hero comics seriously and at the same time completely makes fun of them.

What if you found out your father was ABYSS, the world’s worst super-villain? Eric Hoffman inherited more than a billionaire fortune… he also got a killer robot, a plot to destroy San Francisco and an infamous legacy to live down. Join the dysfunctional comedy adventure from the warped mind of Kevin Rubio, creator of parody film web phenomenon “TROOPS” and the creative team behind comedy smash “Star Wars: Tag and Bink”.

The series is fun, tons of fun.  The characters can get me to laugh and the action is fun.  The art is top notch.  It’s hard to describe it but the series just nails what comics are supposed to be about.  It’s serious and goofy at the same time, just a great mix.

This is one of those series that you just can’t help but like.  An absolute buy.

Plot:  Kevin Rubio nails it.  I want to see an entire universe made up of his creations.  It’s a serious comic, but also completely makes fun of the genre taking characters to the extreme.  It does it all in a way though that it’s not a spoof, something that’s hard to do.  Rubio knocks it out of the park.  Rating: 9

Art:  Lucas Marangon provides the pencils and along with Nick Schley on inks, Andrew Dalhouse on color and Troy Peteri on letters, this team nails the feel of Rubios writing.  It’s a great style that keeps me on my toes.  The designs are over the top like the personalities and just like the writing makes fun of and honors comics as a whole.  Solid art.  Rating: 9

Overall:  This is one of those comics that honors and spoofs comics as a whole.  It’s so much fun to read, it’s what comics should be, entertaining.  If you’ve never read a Red 5 comic book, this would be a great one to start and for a bargain price of $9.95 it’s absolutely worth it.  Overall rating: 9
